Understanding Canon's EOS Digital SDK

Canon EOS Digital Software Development Kit

Discover how the remote shooting possibilities of EOS and PowerShot cameras can be unlocked using Canon's innovative Software Development Kit.

Canon EOS Digital Software Development Kit

Canon's Software Development Kit unlocks a range of remote control features for Canon EOS and PowerShot cameras, such as the ability to change camera settings, take pictures and record videos, transfer and delete files from the memory card and (on compatible PowerShot cameras) operate the zoom.

When you need to control a Canon EOS camera remotely, there are numerous options available – from tethered shooting using EOS Utility on Windows and Mac, to working wirelessly with Canon's Camera Connect smartphone app. But what if you need a more advanced or robust solution? What is the best option if you have to generate a high volume of imagery day in, day out, or you want to integrate Canon cameras into an automated workflow? Enter Canon's SDK (Software Development Kit), which enables software developers and computer programmers to create customised digital solutions for controlling Canon cameras.

There are essentially two parts to the Canon SDK: EDSDK (EOS Digital SDK) and CCAPI (Camera Control API). Both offer the same core functionalities – remote shooting, image transfer, camera setting and Live View monitor – but the EDSDK requires a wired connection and the CCAPI offers wireless camera control.

"They're both ways of interacting with the hardware via software, and the gateway to controlling a camera remotely," says John Maurice, European Product Marketing Manager at Canon Europe. "The reason you come to the EDSDK or the CCAPI is that you have a problem that you need to solve by remote camera control. The ability to do this and integrate it with software has benefits for organisations across industries and across use cases.

Canon AMLOS Named a 2023 CES Best of Innovation Award Winner

Canon U.S.A., Inc.’s AMLOS Solution Among the Top Technologies Named a 2023 CES Best of Innovation Award Winner

Canon Recognized in the Category of Software and Mobile Apps – One of 17 Honorees out of a Record-High Submission Pool of over 2,100 Products

MELVILLE, N.Y., December 28, 2022 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is pleased to announce that AMLOS (Activate My Line of Sight) has garnered another accolade: a 2023 CES Best of Innovation Award in the Software and Mobile Apps category. The AMLOS Solution, developed by Canon U.S.A., Inc., is a software-and-camera product suite designed to provide a new level of engagement for collaboration across multiple locations using the power of Canon’s image processing technology, along with hand gesture controls.

The CES Innovation Awards program is an annual competition honoring outstanding design and engineering in consumer technology products across 28 product categories. The CES 2023 Innovation Awards program received a record-high number of over 2,100 submissions. An independent panel of industry expert judges reviewed submissions based on innovation and functionality, aesthetic, and design. Out of those submissions, hundreds of products were selected as CES 2023 Innovation Honorees. Those rating the highest across each category receive the "Best of Innovation” designation. AMLOS was among only 17 products given this high-level distinction for 2023.

CES, the most influential tech show in the world, will be held in Las Vegas from Thursday, Jan. 5 through Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023. Attendees will have the chance to interact with AMLOS in an immersive, real-time experience at the Canon booth, located at booth #16359 in Central Hall.

“To be honored with a CES Best of Innovation award is a testament to the creativity, research and expert development that went into making AMLOS a valuable tool to help bridge the gap between the office and employees working from home,” said Shinichi “Sam” Yoshida, executive vice president and general manager of Canon U.S.A., Inc. “It helps give people a consistent experience no matter where they are working. We are excited that the industry is recognizing the value AMLOS can provide in this endeavor.”

Leading up to the official availability announcement just a few months ago, AMLOS generated wide industry acclaim for its efforts in helping hybrid work teams stay engaged with one another and well-connected despite being in different locations. Keypoint Intelligence, a global market research firm and independent evaluator of print and smart workplace technology and services, named AMLOS a winner of its Buyers Lab (BLI) 2023 Outstanding Innovation Award, which followed an April announcement from ProductionHUB, a leading entertainment and media industry publication, which named it an Award of Excellence winner. AMLOS also won the InfoComm Best of Show Award after Canon’s presence in the show in June.

Developed by Canon U.S.A., Inc. to help support high productivity and employee engagement, the AMLOS solution is a software-and-camera product suite designed to support modern hybrid meetings. The AMLOS solution is an additional layer on top of an organization’s existing, compatible conference solution.1 It allows both in-person and remote participants to engage in meetings, providing an intuitive experience with hand gesture controls for in-person participants, and a user interface that can be customized by a remote participant to help promote collaboration.1 The AMLOS solution consists of software and a Canon CR-N300 or CR-N500 PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) camera.2

AMLOS will be on display at in the Canon booth at the Consumer Electronic Show 2023 in the Las Vegas Convention Central, Hall 3, #16359 from January 5-8, 2023.

Canon EOS VR System Update

Canon enhances VR Content Production Workflows with New VR Software

VR Software Update v1.2

Canon enhances VR Content Production Workflows with New VR software
Canon EOS R5 V / RF 5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye Lens

London, United Kingdom, 22 December 2022 – Canon Europe today announces an update for its EOS VR SYSTEM in response to user feedback. A software update – version 1.2 – significantly improves performance and functionality, while maintaining the ease-of-use. Both the EOS VR Utility and EOS VR Plug-in for Adobe Premier Pro have been updated to improve efficiency in the post-production workflow, and more significantly EOS VR Utility now supports the conversion of compatible RAW files at up to 60P, supporting more creators in how they want to shoot.

Enhanced Functionality and Performance

Providing the same simple and intuitive user interface as the initial software, EOS VR Utility features a new RAW movie support function/tab. This update enables creators to work with and make adjustments to compatible RAW files, even at the higher frame rate of 8K/60p, such as those from the EOS R5 C. The combination of 60fps, 8K and the high dynamic range of the RAW file guarantees exceptional image quality and smooth moving images. To make it easier for VR content creators to work with such large VR files, both EOS VR Utility and the EOS VR Plug-in support compatible GPUs (graphics cards) for improved processing and conversion times, speeding up the post-production workflow. In addition to these enhancements, Apple silicon is now natively supported, enabling users to realise the full benefit of the latest Apple processors to further speed up workflows on Mac devices. The EOS VR Plug-in also has the added benefit of a speed priority mode, whereby the creator can apply the VR conversion after editing to shorten post-production time.

Greater Freedom of Choice

The v1.2 software also gives VR content creators more flexibility and a range of tools to support their workflows. A newly added high quality HEVC 4:4:4 10-bit file format option on the Windows EOS VR Utility software gives more options for codecs when exporting content, while a much-requested lens mask function (Windows and Mac) eliminates the neighbouring lens view, while also feathering the edges of the frame, taking out another step in the final edit.

The VR Software Update v1.2 will be available to download in January 2023 here:

SUNSTUDIOS, backed by Canon Australia, Raises Vital Funds

SUNSTUDIOS, backed by Canon Australia, exhibition raises vital funds for education charity

GO Foundation receives cheque from SUNSTUDIOS
GO Foundation receives cheque from SUNSTUDIOS

After two years, SUNSTUDIOS, backed by Canon Australia, were delighted to bring back the This Time It’s Personal photography exhibition to raise $20,000 for education charity, GO Foundation.

Curated by Nicky Catley, Group Picture Editor at Australian Geographic, the exhibition featured 64 unique photographs by some of Australia’s most renowned photographers, whose work was sold at a discount rate to support the worthy cause.

A total of 38 works were sold, and all funds raised were donated directly to the GO Foundation which was founded by former AFL players, Adam Goodes and Michael O’Loughlin to create opportunities for Indigenous youth through education and bespoke scholarship programs. The total raised by the 2022 exhibition will help the charity fund primary school through to tertiary students in Sydney, Adelaide and Canberra.

Luke Harrison, Head of SUNSTUDIOS:

“The exhibition provided an opportunity for Sydney to connect back into its art scene, while also giving back to the community. We’re delighted to be able to provide a platform for professional photographers to shoot out of love and passion, rather than work. We have used the exhibition as an opportunity to raise funds for a select charity each year and we were delighted to be able to partner with The GO Foundation for the latest installment of ‘This Time It’s Personal’. The organisation is doing great work in supporting Indigenous youth and building better futures with more opportunities through their scholarship program and Canon wholeheartedly supports getting behind causes that are supporting young people in Indigenous communities across the region”.

Charlene Davison, GO Foundation CEO:

“With supporters like SUNSTUDIOS, Canon Australia and all of the artists who have so generously donated their work, our joint ambition is to see GO thrive so that we can deliver on our mission to empower through education.

We know that for Aboriginal kids to thrive they need to experience, belong and feel connected to their culture so at GO culture is at the heart of what we do. Through our holistic Program, GO provides wrap around support that aims to give every Scholar their best experience of education. Our Program includes cultural and aspirational connection days, access to professional opportunities and services through our Partners and a financial scholarship. We thank everyone who has supported This Time It’s Personal for their generosity.”

1 Document print speeds are the averages of ESAT in Office Category Test for the default simplex mode, ISO/IEC 24734. Photo print speed is based on the default setting using ISO/JIS-SCID N2 on Photo Paper Plus Glossy II and does not take into account data processing time on host computer. Print speed may vary depending on system configuration, interface, software, document complexity, print mode, page coverage, type of paper used etc. See www.usa.canon.com/ipm for additional details.

2 Page yield of color inks is an average yield of cyan, magenta and yellow combined. Page yield of included inks used for initial setup is lower than the replacement ink bottles, as a certain amount of ink is consumed into fill into the print head during setup (charging the print head initially). Actual page yield will vary significantly depending on content printed, ink levels maintained in all four reservoirs, and other factors. Page yield is the estimated value based on Canon individual test method using the ISO/IEC 24712 chart and continuous printing simulation with the full set of replacement ink bottles after initial setup.

3 Warranty is effective for three (3) years from date of original purchase or the printing of 80,000 pages, whichever comes first. Warranty program is subject to certain conditions and restrictions. See www.usa.canon.com/support/maxify-gx-series-3-year-limited-warranty for details.

5 PosterArtist Online Version requires a personal computer with Internet access and a compatible Canon printer. The service is not available on some operating systems or browsers. See usa.canon.com/PosterArtist for details.

6 Print speed is based on internal testing. Print speed may vary, depending on the number of copies selected as well as the settings for size, type, and orientation of paper.

7 Based on ISO/IEC standard.

Canon UK & Ireland ranked in Top 50 UK Employers List

Canon UK & Ireland has been ranked 42 in The Inclusive Top 50 UK Employers List

Canon UK & Ireland has been ranked 42 in The Inclusive Top 50 UK Employers List

London, United Kingdom, 5th December 2022 - The UK’s most inclusive employers have been revealed in the 2022 Inclusive Top 50 UK Employers index, announced at the Inclusive Awards on December 1, 2022. Compiled by Inclusive Companies, the list acknowledges and ranks businesses which are most consistent throughout the whole tenure of their organisations and encompass all types of diversity. Now in its seventh year, it has become the definitive cross-industry index harnessing both best practice and innovation with the goal of driving inclusion for all.

In recognition of its continued dedication to workplace diversity, equity & inclusion, Canon UK & Ireland has been ranked 42 in The Inclusive Top 50 UK Employers List 2022/23. Canon’s position reflects the high standard to which it operates. As well as addressing areas of improvement, Canon has developed and delivered high impact initiatives to actively implement solutions.

Debbie Brown, HR Director at Canon UK & Ireland said: “At Canon we prioritise inclusivity and diversity, striving to achieve our philosophy of Kyosei – ‘living and working together for the common good’. We would like to thank all our employees, including the BAME Steering Group and Inclusion Network Leads, for their dedication to our people vision to be a diverse organisation that not only reflects our customers’ diversity but ensures we’re an inclusive place to work. The aim of this vision is to enable everyone to bring their whole selves to work, where they are enabled to thrive and contribute to achieving our business goals. We’re delighted to be recognised in The Inclusive Top 50 UK Employers List and hope to expand our inclusive efforts even further in the years to come.”

Founder and CEO of Inclusive Companies, Paul Sesay said, “The independent advisory panel of Diversity & Inclusion experts review and analyse each and every submission. They look at ALL areas of diversity, including age, culture, disability, ethnicity, gender, LGBTQ+ and religion. Those organisations who have participated submit a great wealth of evidence regarding their inclusive practices, covering a wide range of areas and topics, and it is from this that the experts determine the Top 50 Inclusive employers.”

Entries are growing each year and see submissions from a very wide range of employers: IT companies to NHS Trusts; police constabularies to The Open University and utility organisations to building societies. Whilst those in this year’s Top 3 had been placed the year before, there were many new organisations entering the 2022 list including: Allianz, Transunion, Humberside Police, Rolls-Royce, Lincolnshire Police, Novuna, Canon, Police Now, Open University, CGI, Crown Commercial and NielsenIQ. It is Paul’s intention for it to grow further as more organisations seek to embody best practice in diversity and inclusion.

“The balance of submissions and those which made the Top 50 was in favour of the public sector organisations and I wonder if this is because of their workforce demographic?” observes Paul. “Equally, could it be the wide and diverse audience they serve? Or perhaps it is their public accountability? The truth is most likely to lie in a mix of all three.” What Paul would love to see is more submissions from FTSE100 businesses, private sector organisations and educational establishments. “They are in there,” added Paul, “but wouldn’t it be great if they were pushing that balance back to a more equitable one with regards to the public sector?”

Inclusive Companies helps organisations create cultural transformation through a “hearts and mind” approach to increase social inclusion and empowerment with the intention of embedding DEI into everything they practice as an essential ingredient.

Now well-established, its Inclusive Top 50 UK Employers that draws attention to those employers which are working very hard to be truly inclusive. The way the organisations are assessed means that they have avoided the all too common ‘peaks and troughs’ of awareness, usually brought on by a life affirming event or, all too often, a tragedy which makes its mark on society and the public consciousness. Paul is very aware of this saying “the next goal of Inclusive Companies is to drive the embedding of diversity and inclusion in people’s day-to-day lives and their communities through their changed and improved work practices.”
