Applications open from Monday, March 28th to students across Europe, Middle East and Africa

The Canon Student Development Programme launches for 2022 - Portfolio Submission
The educational programme lasts between six to twelve months depending on mentee’s progress through the process and is designed to cultivate the next generation of photojournalists. By creating a peer-to-peer network for visual storytellers, the programme will work with a cohort of international experts to support this year’s mentees and provide them with the knowledge and inspiration they need to launch their careers.

The programme is open to students and interns residing in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, from March 28th until April 29th. A limited number of spaces will also be available for recommendations from industry professionals. Submissions will be judged by a panel of editors from AFP, Getty Images and Reuters who will decide on the initial 100-strong shortlist of the region’s most promising young storytellers.

Forging future careers through 1:1 mentoring

The Canon Student Development Programme launches for 2022
Once selected, each of the 100 student mentees will be partnered with one of the programme’s expert mentors. Throughout June and July, they will complete three virtual sessions to refine their portfolio and project synopsis – with a particular focus on exploring different editing options and ways to further strengthen narrative skills and develop authorial signatures.

Based on these sessions, each mentor will nominate their strongest candidates and a 30-strong group will then be chosen by an independent panel for the following stages of the programme.

Finbarr O’Reilly, Programme Mentor and Canon Ambassador commented: “It’s a great opportunity to learn from some of the best practitioners in our industry. The Canon Student Development Programme gives photographers, who are in the early stages of their career, direct access to some of the most experienced photojournalists, who can share what they have learned over decades of working in the field, and some of the tips and techniques that they use for visual storytelling. Students get to learn the various stages of ideation, research, concepting, execution, then editing and sharing their work with editors and the wider public. In addition to the creative aspects, they also learn about the business side to a certain extent – how to present and market yourself.”

Hands-on workshops and portfolio reviews

The Canon Student Development Programme launches for 2022 - Worksjop
The top 30 shortlisted students will be invited to attend Canon’s prestigious workshop, taking place in the run up to Visa pour l'image in Perpignan, France – one of the world’s leading photojournalism festivals. The workshop will offer an intimate forum to exchange ideas, build relationships and nurture talent. Students will be exposed to a mix of lectures and practical sessions hosted by revered photographers including Canon Ambassador Paolo Verzone, who will run a masterclass on lighting techniques for portraiture.

On the penultimate day, students will take part in group portfolio review sessions hosted by acclaimed industry experts, including Benoit Baume (Fisheye), Chiara Bardelli Nonino (Vogue Italia) and Fiona Shields (The Guardian), and have the incredible opportunity to present their work and critique their fellow peers in an exclusive knowledge sharing forum. On the final day, participants will attend the first day of Visa pour l'image and explore all that the festival has to offer.

Hamburg Portfolio Review

The Canon Student Development Programme launches for 2022 - Hamburg
The final stage of the process will see five finalists head to Hamburg for Europe’s newest development platform, the Hamburg Portfolio Review. During a three-day trip, the final five will each take part in four individual portfolio reviews, have their work physically exhibited at the show and attend a series of exclusive media appointments with key editors in the industry. Over the following six months, they will receive longer term mentorships and will be provided with a €2,000 grant and top-of-the-line Canon equipment to support their next creative chapter.

Susie Donaldson, EMEA Marketing Director for Canon, said: “We are really seeing the incredible successes of the Canon Student Development Programme, as we are watching alumni of previous years advance in their careers. We’re establishing something special, a truly impressive programme of knowledge sharing and talent development that is self-perpetuating with successful candidates returning to give back to the programme which helped them in the right direction.”

“We are constantly learning and evolving how this programme can best serve the creative community it looks to cultivate and support. For example, for this year, we’ve added new activities to the overall package, designed to support students longer term to make a real difference to their career development. This year will also be the first since 2019 undisrupted by the pandemic and with the return of in-person events and experiences.”

The Canon Student Development Programme launches for 2022 - Student Participation
Since 2017, more than 1,000 students have taken part in the programme, resulting in real success stories of talents that have gone on to establish incredible careers. Alumni such as Ksenia Kuleshova (2017), who has since gone on to become a successful photojournalist, works regularly for publications including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal; while Michele Spatari (2018) is an award-winning documentary and news photographer for AFP who has captured some of the most significant events in recent history, including the Covid-19 pandemic. Canon still No. 1 in Global Interchangeable-Lens Digital Camera Market

Canon Celebrates 19th Consecutive Year of No. 1 Share of Global Interchangeable-Lens Digital Camera Market
Canon Celebrates 19th Consecutive Year of No. 1 Share of Global Interchangeable-Lens Digital Camera Market

MELVILLE, NY, March 28, 2022 – Canon Inc. announced today that the company’s interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and mirrorless cameras) have maintained the No. 1 share of the global market for 19 consecutive years1 from 2003 to 2021.

Canon develops the key imaging system components featured in its EOS series of digital interchangeable-lens cameras — including CMOS image sensors, image processors and interchangeable lenses—under the core notion of, "Speed, Comfort and High Image Quality." Amassing together a wide-ranging product lineup—from high-performance flagship models that are go-to tools for professionals to entry-level models that allow users to enjoy high-image-quality shooting with easy operation, as well as a wide variety of RF and EF series lenses that make possible a broad spectrum of creative expression—Canon continues to support the diverse needs of customers.

During the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS Kiss Digital in Japan (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D in other regions) in September 2003. This groundbreaking camera, which was competitively priced and featured a compact, lightweight design, captured the top share of the global market and set the stage for growth in the digital SLR market. Since that time, Canon has continued to launch a range of revolutionary products, including the professional-model EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for digital SLR video recording. Launched in October 2018, the EOS R System was born from Canon’s desire to construct the ideal lens mount and maximize the appeal of its new RF lenses. Canon has since continued to expand the range of imaging creativity and new possibilities for visual expression, including the release of the EOS R5—the first Canon camera to feature 8K video recording2—in July 2020.

EOS R3 full-frame mirrorless camera
In 2021, Canon announced the EOS R3 full-frame mirrorless camera (released in November 2021) featuring the high performance and reliability demanded by professional and enthusiast users, alongside eight new RF lenses3.

While further expanding its lineup through such new launches as the EOS VR System, Canon managed to secure the No. 1 share of the global market for the 19th consecutive year.

Canon will continue to enhance its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technology while further strengthening and expanding the EOS series of cameras and RF and EF series of lenses, opening up new avenues of image capture to meet the needs of increasingly diverse users and to promote the spread of photo and video culture.

For the twenty-second year in a row, Canon and Images Evidence will be presenting the Canon Female Photojournalist Grant to an outstanding photographer in recognition of her contribution to photojournalism - €8,000 will be awarded, supporting the winning photographer with her year-long project ahead of their exhibition the following year.

The 2021 recipient, Acacia Johnson, received the grant money to carry out her project in Alaska – To Know The Earth from Above: The Bush Pilots Connecting Rural Alaska. Currently, only 20 per cent of Alaska is accessible by road, and dozens of its remote settlements, largely Alaskan Native communities, rely on bush aircraft for essential services, including food, medical care, and emergency transport. Starting in her hometown of Anchorage, the grant allowed Johnson to put this community into light through large-format portraits of pilots with their aircraft and aerial photographs of aircraft in flight in the Alaskan landscape. Johnson will be showcasing their body of work at Visa pour l’image 2022.

Past recipients of the grant have received funding, support and exposure, as well becoming a source of inspiration for other female photographers in the industry. Acacia Johnson, winner of the 2021 grant, says: “I was honored to be awarded the 2021 Canon Female Photojournalist Grant. The grant money has allowed me to spend time, energy and creativity on a slower, more in-depth project, with the hope that it will be a lasting contribution to my home community. If you are thinking about applying, I encourage you to – the grant could be career-changing. It has allowed me to undertake a longtime dream project.”

Entries to both grants are now open, with submissions closing on 17th May 2021.

Canon Growth Strategy 2022: Cameras and Network Cameras

Canon Strategy Update 2022: Mirrorless Cameras / RF Lenses (Canon EOS R System)

As for cameras, although the overall market continues to shrink, this mainly reflects lower sales of entry-class models. In contrast, demand among professionals and advanced amateurs seeking high-quality image expression remains strong. Overall, the market seems to be bottoming out. Over the past several years, we have worked to raise the appeal of the EOS R system by enhancing our lineup with highly competitive full frame mirrorless cameras and RF lenses. As a result, we have established a solid position in mirrorless cameras, and are now in a situation where we can target the top market share position. Leveraging this, we will not only increase our market share, but also strive to improve our product mix, and combined with the effects of structural reforms we have been implementing, we feel we have created a system that can generate stable, high profits.

Going forward, we will continue to expand our lineup in response to user feedback, secure the global No. 1 market share position in mirrorless cameras, maintain the level of sales, and further increase profitability by expanding automation and improving development efficiency.

Canon Strategy Update 2022: Summary towards future Growth Strategy (2025)

Last year, in the first year of our 5-year initiative, Phase VI of the Excellent Global Corporation Plan, we were affected by product supply shortages, but our profits exceeded those of 2019 before the pandemic hit, and we are off to a good start in achieving our targets for 2025. We will continue to change by fully demonstrating the "enterprising spirit" and "Spirit of the Three Selfs" that have been in our DNA since our foundation. In the final year of Phase VI, we will return to being a highly profitable company, achieving our performance targets for 2025 of net sales of 4.5 trillion yen or more, operating income ratio of 12% or more, and net income ratio of 8% or more.

Canon's Sterling Performance Continues Unbeaten as No. 1 Printing Brand

No. 1 Laser Printer Brand in Malaysia Since 2015
No. 1 Laser Printer Brand in Malaysia Since 2015

SHAH ALAM, 4 March 2022 – Despite global and local economic challenges last two years, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Canon Marketing Malaysia (“Canon”) continues its sterling performance in the domestic printing shipment market.

Canon was recently identified by market research firm IDC in its Worldwide Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker 2021Q4 as having achieved another record year in the printer segment. According to IDC, Canon is the clear pioneer brand in the Inkjet Printer segment for 26 consecutive years since 1996. IDC also reported that Canon is the top Laser Printer brand for 7 consecutive years since 2015.

These achievements are no small feat for Canon, which competes in a very competitive domestic printer market segment.

Sandy Lee, Head of Consumer System Products Division at Canon Marketing Malaysia said: “We’re incredibly honoured and proud to be maintained as the #1 brand in the market for both inkjet and laser printers. This achievement is aligned with our dedication and commitment to providing reliable quality products and extensive after-sales service support. We are glad that our innovations, solutions and services are addressing the needs of all user segments.

“Our achievement would not be possible without the unwavering support from all consumers and our business partners, in both the commercial and consumer segment,” added Lee.

As a total business solutions provider, Canon has a wide range of products for both the business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) market segments.

For the B2C market segment, Canon offers an extensive range of home printers and professional photo printers, that highly appeal to students, young executives, home users and photographers. For home printers, Canon's Inkjet Printer line-up covers cartridge-based and refillable ink tanks printers. Featuring "INKpressive Performance" and compact features, these printers allow users to achieve greater cost efficiency and higher productivity.

The reliability of Canon’s inkjet printers has enabled Canon to diversify its offerings to include products that are well-fitted for SMEs and SMBs, further stretching its market share beyond the consumer segment. Now, Canon has a vast range of B2B inkjet printers that cater to business segment too. As an innovative leader that caters to the different needs of consumers, Canon has also strengthened its e-commerce presence to ensure that its products are highly accessible to customers anytime, anywhere.

As for the B2B market segment, Canon offers high-performing inkjet and laser printers, that are able to help businesses deliver excellent printing performance. These printers carry comprehensive features which elevate businesses to a higher level of productivity. With high printing speed, connectivity, ease of use and advanced security features, Canon’s range of printers perfectly satisfies the needs of small offices, home offices, small-medium enterprises and corporations.

In addition, Canon’s tools and applications such as the Canon PRINT Business app, PIXMA/MAXIFY Cloud Link and Canon Print Service utilise cloud technology and wireless solutions to help businesses meet their digitalisation needs. These features are parts and parcels of Canon’s Total Business Solution that helps businesses work efficiently, in line with its tagline, “Business Can Be Simple”.

“Since the start of the pandemic, companies in Malaysia have transitioned through multiple working practises such as work-from-home and the hybrid approach. Throughout the various transitions at the workplace and home office, printers have established themselves as the one key essential tool that cannot be ignored,” Lee explained.

Beyond high-quality consumer and business products, guided by its “Delighting You Always” tagline, Canon’s excellent after-sales support is one of the key factors that help the company to attract new customers while at the same time retaining existing customers. In line with this, Canon has established branch offices in Penang, Johor Bahru, Kuantan, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and a vast network of authorised service partners nationwide. Canon believes that having strong customer service has contributed significantly to the company’s recent achievements in the inkjet and laser printer market shipments.

With Canon’s firm commitment to innovation and the environment, the company hopes to maintain its leadership in the highly competitive printer market. While the company pursues providing practical solutions to businesses, Canon is also mindful of the need to strike a balance between revenue growth in a sustainable manner to continue delighting its customers for many more years.
