Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM – versatile, high-performance zoom lens
Offering a focal range of 18–135mm, the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM has been created to offer photographers a compact, versatile zoom lens which can be used to capture a variety of subjects, from portraits to landscapes and action shots. Ensuring high-quality stills at slow shutter speeds, the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM features an intelligent optical Image Stabilizer which offers a 4-stop advantage over non-IS models. The lens will also sense whether the photographer is shooting normally or panning, engaging the most appropriate IS mode to capture the best possible image. When shooting movies, Dynamic IS automatically engages, countering any shake caused by the videographer's movement to produce smooth, stable footage.
For subtle background blur when exploring shallow depths of field in stills and movies, the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM features a circular aperture with an Electro Magnetic Diaphragm (EMD) which permits highly-accurate control over aperture settings. High image quality is also assured throughout the zoom range thanks to four groups of lens elements including one Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) and one Precision Molded Optics (PMo) element to counter chromatic aberration. Canon's optimised Super spectra coatings on each lens element also reduce ghosting and flare, ensuring images require minimal post-processing.  Source: Canon

This E-TTL II external Canon hotshoe flash unit will be paired with the new Canon EOS 700D (and Canon PowerShot SX40 HS) for event, indoor / low-light and macro photography. The Canon Speedlite 430EX II (as my current Speedlite 230EX II) is highly compatible with the Canon PowerShot SX50 HS / SX40 HS. Even the lens zoom function in E-TTL Mode is compatible with the SX40 HS (with which I am very impressed with).

Canon camera campatibility (not just EOS DSLR)
The Canon Speedlite 430EX II is not just compatible with Canon EOS DSLR cameras, but also Canon Powershot models (GX 1, G16, G15 and the SX range) with an external hotshoe mount.

Overview from Canon
Bringing a new level of versatility and capability to flash photography, the Speedlite 430EX II features a powerful flash (guide number of 141 ft./43m at ISO 100) with a fast recycling time in a compact, durable body. A one-touch quick-lock mechanism makes it easy to attach or detach the 430EX II from the camera and a metal foot has been added for strength and durability. Flash controls can now be set through the camera's LCD screen on compatible EOS Digital SLR cameras. The Speedlite 430EX II is also quieter, recycle time is 20% faster (as compared to the 430EX) and since it is compatible with Canon's wireless E-TTL, it can be used as an affordable "slave unit". Canon EOS 70D Interview With Canon South Africa

Canon EOS 70D Launch Interview With Canon South Africa

Roger Machin from Canon South Africa talks about the new Canon EOS 70D and what exactly Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus means.

Canon EOS 70D Dual Pixel CMOS AF Technology

Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced its parent company, Canon Inc., developed Dual Pixel CMOS AF, an innovative new autofocus technology for the EOS 70D Digital SLR camera. Dual Pixel CMOS AF, a phase-detection AF technology conducted directly on the image sensor plane, employs a CMOS sensor on which all of the effective pixels are able to perform both imaging and phase-detection AF simultaneously to achieve dramatically improved AF performance over prior EOS cameras during Live View and video shooting.

As digital SLR cameras have evolved in recent years in terms of functionality and performance, shooting styles have become more diverse. An increasing number of users no longer rely exclusively on the viewfinder when shooting, but rather view the camera's LCD monitor when using the Live View function to capture still images and when shooting video.

Canon EOS 70D Dual Pixel CMOS AF Technology

Canon EOS 70D Dual Pixel CMOS AF Technology

Canon's newly-developed Dual Pixel CMOS AF is an innovative new image-plane phase-detection AF technology that employs a CMOS sensor on which all of the effective pixels are able to perform both imaging and phase-detection AF simultaneously. Each individual pixel (the smallest structural unit capable of outputting an image signal) on the CMOS sensor incorporates two independent photodiodes (elements that transform light into electrical signals) which output signals that can be used for both imaging and the phase-detection AF. When using the EOS 70D Digital SLR camera's Live View function, the technology enables autofocusing with ease, flexibility, speed and accuracy similar to shooting through the viewfinder, enabling sharp focus to be obtained across a wide shooting area1 through phase-detection AF2 until final focus is achieved.

Compared with earlier generations of Canon's image-plane phase-detection AF3, Dual Pixel CMOS AF realizes shorter focusing times, outstanding tracking performance and smoother autofocusing during video shooting. And, because Live View shooting can be used in a manner similar to using the camera's viewfinder, the fast and smooth AF performance allows users to concentrate more attention on the subject and composing the photo when shooting.

Compared with the EOS Rebel SL1, which employs Hybrid CMOS AF II, the EOS 70D Digital SLR camera (scheduled to go on sale in September 2013), which is the first camera to feature Dual Pixel CMOS AF, not only achieves AF speed that is approximately 30 percent faster4 but also delivers improved Movie Servo AF tracking for continuously smooth focusing during video shooting, even when filming quickly moving subjects.

Because the outstanding AF performance of Dual Pixel CMOS AF is made possible with 1035models of EF lenses (including many earlier models and models available outside of Japan), users can enjoy a wide range of photographic endeavors achievable with various lenses.

Recognizing great potential for the application of this technology across diverse product categories, Canon aims to promote its development efforts in the field of AF technology, targeting further advances to contribute to expanding the world of photographic expression.

How Dual Pixel CMOS AF Works
Canon EOS 70D Dual Pixel CMOS AF Technology

Canon EOS 70D Dual Pixel CMOS AF Technology

Reference information - (click to Enlarge)

Phase-detection AF
With conventional phase-detection AF, the light that enters through the photographic lens is divided into two images. The difference in the focus point position between the two images is measured on a dedicated AF sensor rather than the image sensor itself, enabling the camera to determine the direction and amount of lens adjustment required to obtain proper focus. Because phase-detection AF enables fast focusing performance compared with contrast-detection AF, the technology is widely employed in digital SLR cameras, mainly for viewfinder shooting.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF employs the same measurement principle as a dedicated AF sensor, except that it is carried out directly with the image sensor. Its large coverage area enables smooth and reliable image-plane phase-detection AF for both still images and video with no reliance on dedicated AF sensors or contrast-detection AF.
Contrast AF

Contrast AF is an autofocus method employed in compact digital cameras and video camcorders, as well as conventional digital SLR cameras for Live View shooting. Because contrast is highest when an image is in proper focus, the camera analyzes the contrast information from the image on the image sensor, adjusting the lens until the maximum contrast value is reached. While contrast AF offers high focusing accuracy, it tends to require more time compared with phase-detection AF because the focusing components of the lens must be driven during AF measurement to find the point of peak contrast.
Hybrid CMOS AF and Hybrid CMOS AF II

Hybrid CMOS AF is an AF method employed in the EOS Rebel T5i Digital SLR camera and the EOS M digital camera that delivers enhanced focusing speed during Live View shooting and when shooting video. Combining fast phase-detection AF and high-accuracy contrast AF, Hybrid CMOS AF makes possible faster focusing performance than contrast AF alone, quickly measuring the subject distance using a dedicated phase-detection AF image element embedded in the CMOS image sensor and completing the process with extreme accuracy using contrast AF. The EOS Rebel SL1 camera features Hybrid CMOS AF II, which makes use of an imaging sensor that supports AF across a wide area spanning approximately 80 percent of the shooting area measured vertically and horizontally.

Featuring an innovative new Dual Pixel CMOS AF system for instant and precise focusing of video as well as still images, the EOS 70D also provides outstanding image quality and performance thanks to its new 20.2 megapixel APS-C Canon CMOS sensor and Canon's superb DIGIC 5+ Image Processor.

Canon's newly-developed Dual Pixel CMOS AF, a phase-detection autofocus (AF) technology on the camera's image sensor plane, enables users to shoot video with the new EOS 70D close to the quality of a video shot with a camcorder. Dual Pixel CMOS AF employs a revolutionary CMOS sensor on which all of the effective pixels are able to perform both still imaging and phase-detection AF simultaneously to achieve dramatically improved AF performance over other EOS cameras during Live View shooting and when shooting video.

Compared with Canon's conventional Live View AF systems, Dual Pixel CMOS AF realizes shorter focusing times, exceptional tracking performance and smoother autofocusing during video shooting. And, because Live View shooting can be used in a manner similar to using the camera's viewfinder, the fast and smooth AF performance allows users to concentrate more attention on the subject and composing the photo when shooting. Dual Pixel CMOS AF also supports 1031 models of EF lenses (including many earlier models), enhancing a photographer's creative options as well as maximizing the benefit of Dual Pixel CMOS AF in a variety of situations.

"The new EOS 70D Digital SLR camera is a game-changing DSLR model that incorporates advanced features for high-quality still and video capture and intuitive operation that allows photographers to evolve their creative vision from shooting still images to shooting moving images," said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. "This camera's outstanding image quality combined with built-in wireless technology and popular creative functions and filters makes it easy to turn photos into works of art and share them immediately."
Wireless Connectivity

The EOS 70D Digital SLR camera's built-in wireless transmitter offers users several connectivity options to easily share their images. With the download of the free EOS Remote app2 from the Apple App Store or the Google Play store, users can connect to both iOS® or Android™smartphones and tablets3 to wirelessly transfer photos and videos from their camera to their device. They can also control aperture, shutter speed, and ISO from their smartphone. This camera also has the ability to connect directly to Canon's iMAGE GATEWAY4, making photos easily accessible and ready to share on social networking sites. In addition, the EOS 70D has the ability to connect wirelessly to computers, DLNA devices, Wi-Fi Certified® Canon cameras and wireless PictBridge5 compatible printers, such as the PIXMA MG6320 Wireless Photo All-In-One printer model.
Superb Still Performance

Featuring a new 20.2 megapixel APS-C Canon CMOS sensor and Canon's superb DIGIC 5+ Image Processor, as well as an extensive ISO range of 100-12800 (expandable to 25,600), the EOS 70D Digital SLR camera is capable of producing sharp, detailed images, even in low-light conditions. And with high-speed continuous shooting of up to 7.0 frames per second (fps) united with a 19-point all cross-type AF system (including a high-precision f/2.8 dual cross-type AF center point), it allows photographers to easily capture accurately focused fast moving subjects. In addition, the camera's Scene Intelligent Auto Mode delivers optimized photos and offers outstanding scene detection for amazing results even when shooting in low light.

The EOS 70D also incorporates a 63-zone Dual Layer IFCL (Intelligent Focus, Color & Luminance) AE metering system which enhances accurate exposures by minimizing random metering errors caused by varying subject colors and light sources. Other useful features include a built-in Electronic Level Function, Manual WB settings and AF Microadjustment.
Enhanced EOS Full HD Movie Mode for Professional Quality Video

With Canon's new Dual Pixel CMOS AF system and Movie Servo AF, the camera provides continuous phase-detection AF during video recording for quick and accurate focus tracking of moving subjects in the central 80 percent of the imaging area. While shooting with any of Canon's Stepping Motor (STM) lenses, such as the new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, motor noise from the lens is significantly reduced so the camera will only capture the stereo sound of the scene being recorded. For added flexibility, the EOS 70D Digital SLR camera also features a built-in stereo microphone with manual audio level adjustment and an attenuator function to reduce audio clipping, an accessory jack for external stereo microphones and Video Snapshot mode with editing for expanded video shooting options. When users select the EOS Movie Mode, the EOS 70D offers the ability to shoot in 1080p Full HD video up to 30 fps in either ALL-I or IPB codecs with optional embedded time code, matching the flexibility of other current EOS cameras such as the EOS-1D X, EOS 5D Mark III, and EOS 6D models.
Expanding Creativity

The EOS 70D Digital SLR camera provides advanced amateur photographers and photo hobbyists looking to hone their creative and technical skills with an innovative range of in-camera imaging features such as High Dynamic Range, Multiple Exposure, Handheld Night Scene and HDR Backlight Control modes that allow for expanded creativity. The new camera is also equipped with built-in RAW Image Processing and Image Resizing functions.

When any one of the seven Creative Filters is applied in Live View, users can preview the effect of the filter on the three-inch Vari-Angle Touch Screen monitor without having to shoot the image first. Users can pick from effects such as Art Bold, Fish-eye, Water-painting, Grainy Black and White, Soft Focus, Toy Camera and Miniature and choose the one that best expresses their creative vision before or after the image is captured.

All of these features, when combined with a high-resolution Vari-angle Touch Screen 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor II with intuitive touch controls featuring multi-touch operation and Touch AF, make it the ideal camera choice for photographers looking for the best in imaging technology.

The EOS 70D is compatible with the full line of Canon EF and EF-S lenses as well as SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards, including Ultra High Speed (UHS-1) cards.

Canon EOS 70D
Canon Inc., today announced that the company's EOS line of interchangeable-lens digital cameras (Digital SLR and compact-system cameras) have consistently maintained the No. 1 share worldwide in terms of volume within the interchangeable-lens digital camera market for the 10-year period from 2003 to 2012.*1

By applying these technologies to other models as well, Canon has successfully created a powerful product lineup that effectively responds to the needs of a wide range of users, from professionals to entry-level users, which has enabled the company to maintain the top global share.

In 2003, the dawn of Digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS Digital Rebel, a compact and lightweight user-friendly camera that set the stage for growth in the Digital SLR market while, at the same time, captured the top share of the global market. Since that time, Canon, in the company's ongoing pursuit of high image quality, has launched a number of models targeting advanced-amateur users that offer among the highest levels of performance for their class, including the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for Digital SLR video recording.

In 2012, Canon celebrated the 25th anniversary of the introduction of the EOS camera system and marked its 10th consecutive year as the market's world leader. During the year, Canon launched the compact-system EOS M, aimed at expanding the company's entry-level user base, along with the EOS 6D, the world's smallest and lightest*2 Digital SLR camera equipped with a 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor, which contributed to the growth of the advanced-amateur user segment.

This year, Canon introduced the EOS Rebel SL1, the world's smallest and lightest*2 Digital SLR camera equipped with an APS-C-size sensor, bolstering its product lineup with a model befitting the industry's top brand while targeting its 11th straight year as the world's market leader.

With a history of producing cameras that dates back to the company's founding in 1937, Canon will continue refining its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technologies, striving to produce exceptional and reliable lenses and cameras that cater to the varying needs of photographers-from first-time users to advanced amateurs and professionals-while contributing to expanding the photographic and video imaging culture.

The responsive high-speed AF helps users to capture great shots as they happen, with reduced lag time. Adding to the camera's diverse feature-set is High-Speed Burst HQ which allows for continuous, fast-action, high-resolution shots at up to 14fps. With incredible zoom capabilities, fast and responsive AF, stunning resolution and easy-to-use features, the PowerShot SX280 HS digital camera is the perfect camera for vacationing or capturing a morning soccer game.

Further advancements attributed to DIGIC 6 Image Processor can be experienced in movie mode, which records in MP4 format. The PowerShot SX280 HS digital camera offers a variety of easy-to-use features that help take the guesswork out of capturing captivating, imaginative photos. With Smart AUTO, the camera identifies an ideal image setting by intelligently selecting from one of 58 pre-defined modes. To combat blurry images, the PowerShot SX280 HS digital camera utilizes its Intelligent IS system, which draws from six different stabilization modes to choose the best IS for the current shooting condition. The Intelligent IS system, combined with Smart AUTO creates the camera's Hybrid AUTO mode which helps create a beautiful and steady HD video clip (up to approximately 4 seconds) in Movie Digest mode every time a user shoots a still image while the Movie Digest mode is activated.

Adding to the camera's diverse feature set, the PowerShot SX280 HS digital camera is also equipped with a built-in GPS receiver5, and when activated, data is recorded along with each image. Users can easily access the location where their photos were taken without depending on their often vague post-vacation memory. The built-in GPS receiver not only records the exact location of the shot, but users can create a visual log of their journeys on a map using the bundled Canon software.

To further help ensure that an image is never missed, the PowerShot SX280 HS digital camera comes equipped with ECO mode to assist with battery conservation. ECO Mode manages the 3.0 inch, 461k LCD screen brightness and turns off when the camera is inactive. ECO Mode can be activated for easy power preservation when an additional battery is out of reach or the moment is too exciting to put the camera down.

Canon PowerShot SX40 HS - The road to my first ultra-zoom camera

Canon PowerShot SX40 HS
Over the years I never really bothered owning anything other than a few Canon PowerShot A-Series digital cameras (A520 / A590). Nothing more than a few point-and-shoot holiday photos and for the fundamental understanding of the digital photography process and my hands-on Canon IT sales experience. But all changed in September 2012 while researching a client's requirement for a high-quality, ultra-zoom / telephoto digital camera, but preferably not a Canon EOS DSLR camera.

As an independent Canon IT product re-seller I consulted the Canon PowerShot pricelist and looked at the Canon PowerShot SX30 IS with 35x zoom lens, but it was discontinued and replaced with the more powerful PowerShot SX40 HS. On Canon’s USA website I was greeted with the esthetically beautiful and spec-impressive new 35x zoom lens PowerShot SX30 replacement. With it's 35x ultra zoom, Digic 5 Image Processor, 12.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor and Full HD video format I was more than impressed with the Powershot SX40 HS. I wanted one as well. And as quick as possible.

Canon camera research / purchase
After the product and price research and my countless review readings my client (WPCA / Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras marketing) purchased the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS with one 32 GB Philips SD Memory card (and Lowepro camera bag). As a non-DSLR camera the SX40 HS is ideally suited for their Social Media / internal marketing and general photo and short HD video requirement. Before delivery I had a weekend opportunity for setup and testing the SX40. With its ultra zoom and automatic image stabilser I took some great looking photos straight out the box. All on automatic and all true what most (professional) reviewers had to say about this camera.

Deciding between the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS or SX50 HS (for myself)
At time of ordering I had the choice between the SX40 and the newly available SX50 (with 50x zoom and other enhancements). It took some deliberation to work through the decision-making process, but at the end based my decision on the following criteria:
Same camera as client (decreased learning curve / quick support)
SX40 received very good to excellent reviews from professionals / current owners
Extended zoom and other enhancements on SX50 not a deal-breaker (for me)
SX50 was R1000-00 more expensive (at time of purchase)
Used the balance of my budget to invest in a Manfrotto tripod

Ordering, unpacking and 'shooting'
I ordered my SX40 HS camera from the Canon distributor early December 2012 and collected the product almost immediately. As with the client's SX40 the camera was exceptionably well packaged (as always from Canon) and started taking some decent looking photos after its first battery charge (included NB-10L lithium-ion battery was charged in 1.5 hours and last for up to +- 380 shots).

The operating and menu-system is typical Canon and I was quite impressed with standard / automatic point-and-shoot arrangements and image stabilisation. Its early days, but have started experimenting with the myriad of functions and settings.

Basic photography hardware / software home-office setup
Here some of the equipment I aquired / added to compliment the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS:

  • 2x 16 GB (Class 10) Philips SD memory cards
  • Multi-purpose camera bag
  • Manfrotto MKC3-H01 compact tripod
For the occasional printing of photographs its hooked-up to my existing Canon Pixma MG 4160 colour multifunction printer. Once again a quality Canon product to suite a low to medium home/office budget. Great scanning/copying and automatic duplex printer with both USB and Wi-Fi connectivity.

For downloading photographs, image management and post-production I just use Google Picaso at the moment, but started experimenting with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.3 for more enhanced post-production (with my dual -display and workstation setup).

DSLR vs Point-and-Shoot / Bridge Cameras
The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS is not a Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera and with its 35x optical ultra-zoom lens, LCD and Electronic viewfinder (EVF) is not a point-and-shoot camera either. By many it is refered to as a Bridge camera for 'bridging the gap' between the higher-end DSLR and entry-level digital camera technologies. More information on bridge cameras - read.

Conclusion
At this stage I am more than satisfied with my choice of Canon PowerShot bridge camera. There is still some significant learning, but with sustained confidence in Canon quality an plenty subject experiments I should be up to the task. Herewith a few photographs taken at my first real opportunity recently.
