Canon’s family photo & video platform Lifecake passes two million users

Canon’s family photo & video platform Lifecake passes two million users
Privacy milestone for families with kids: Canon’s family photo & video platform Lifecake passes two million users

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 15 November 2017– Lifecake, a social network for parents to share family photos privately and securely with other family members, has surpassed two million users and 120 million uploads, reflecting a rising concern for privacy on mainstream social media.

Two million Lifecake parents and family members reflect trend to keep family moments secure

QUICK SUMMARY
  • Since being founded in 2012, Lifecake has gained two million users as parents reject public “sharenting” in favour of more controlled, safe family network.
  • Lifecake has also surpassed 120 million photo and video uploads, and one billion secure photo views
  • The average parent lacks privacy know-how and shares 1,500 images of their child on social media before their 5th birthday, according to a ParentZone study* commissioned by UK domain registrar Nominet. (https://www.nominet.uk/parents-oversharing-family-photos-online-lack-basic-privacy-know/)

IN AN AGE OF "SHARENTING”, 2 MILLION LIFECAKERS GO FAMILY-ONLY
A new child timeline is added to Lifecake every 30 seconds – Lifecake allows parents to share timelines with specific friends and family members, so they can stay up to date in a safe and private space. It’s an indication that parents are increasingly wary about posting their kids' photos and videos on the public Internet. Some cite privacy concerns, others simply want to keep family moments away from wider social media audiences.

According to a Nominet/ParentZone study* of 2,000 British parents, the average parent “lacks basic privacy know-how” and shares almost 1,500 images of their child on social media before their fifth birthday.

"Parents take tons of photos. The desire to document the joys of childhood is clearly there," said Lifecake cofounder Ed Botterill. "But there are increasing concerns about controlling who can see images posted on public social media accounts, and who owns the content once it’s uploaded. Lifecake provides a safe, private and future-proof way to do that. Just family and close friends, no one else."

A BILLION PHOTO VIEWS. A CENTURY OF ATTENTION
Lifecake’s milestone illuminates parents’ evolving awareness of appropriate online behaviour. The platform now counts two million parents, grandparents and other family users. In another symbolic highlight, Lifecake recently passed a billion detailed views of 120 million uploads, demonstrating the popularity of the platform for keeping families and friends connected.

“If each view lasted about three seconds, a billion photo views adds up to a century of enjoying family moments,” said Botterill. “That's two million people pausing their lives to connect with the most important people in their lives, wherever they are in the world. Such emotional time travel helps parents relive their memories and reclaim moments that would otherwise be lost. With Lifecake, they can live the story of childhood safely and privately.”

* The “Share with Care” study was commissioned in summer 2016 by non-profit domain registry Nominet and conducted by Parent Zone, a social enterprise focused on educating families about children on the internet. https://www.nominet.uk/parents-oversharing-family-photos-online-lack-basic-privacy-know/

SINGAPORE, 13 November 2017 – Canon, a world leader in digital imaging, today introduces the PIXMA TS207 and TS307. The TS307 stands out for being the first-ever wireless*¹ printer designed to deliver high-quality printing, document scan and copy, by harnessing high-resolution camera optics found on modern smartphones.

"The latest PIXMA printers strike a fine balance between versatility and affordability for home and small offices." said Mr. Satoru Takeda, Vice President of Regional CII, Canon Singapore. "In catering to smartphone users, the PIXMA TS307 is designed in a thoughtful way to bring about absolute convenience. PIXMA TS307: When paired with a smartphone and the Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY app, the TS307 transforms into a multitasking workhorse, producing high-resolution scans of A4 documents or pages from books. A stylish grid surface doubles as a slip-resistant document scan table, where documents or books can be placed flat before image capture with a smartphone camera. Document edges are automatically detected, images are optimized in-app for brightness and contrast seamlessly before printing. Alternatively, images can be converted to PDF format and saved to the local library of the mobile device, cloud service, or sent over email.

The PIXMA TS307 is also equipped with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for easy wireless setup, as well as one-touch access point mode connectivity for connecting with mobile devices easily in the absence of wireless routers. AirPrint and Wireless Pictbridge connectivity round up the suite of powerful wireless connectivity options for this affordable, yet versatile printer.

The PIXMA TS207 succeeds previous generations of printers in the same class, delivering superior performance coupled with style. A glossy-grid textured surface breaks out over the printer exterior for a touch of sophistication while offering protection from fingerprint smudges. Alongside crisp text and strong colours for documents on plain paper, the printer also produces borderless 4R photos effortlessly.

The New Cosmos of Photography accepted entries for the 2017 competition from April 20 to June 15. In addition to conventional photo prints, the range of eligible entries was expanded in 2015 to include online submissions of digital works (stills and videos), attracting 1,705 submissions from individuals and groups both inside and outside Japan. From those entrants seven Excellence Award winners and 11 Honorable Mention Award winners were selected by the Excellence Award Selection Committee. The Excellence Award winners, as Grand Prize candidates, attended a public meeting of the Grand Prize selection committee held on November 10. Each candidate gave a presentation and faced questioning by the selection committee, after which the committee convened and chose Mr. Ansten and Mr. Breitkopf as the Grand Prize winners.

In addition to ¥1 million (approx. US$ 8,840) in prize money, Mr. Ansten and Mr. Breitkopf were awarded a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and EF24-105mm f/4L IS II USM lens kit and the right to hold an exhibit of new work at the New Cosmos of Photography 2018 Exhibition to be held in fall of next year. Details of the Grand Prize public selection committee meeting will be made available on the New Cosmos of Photography website.

The New Cosmos of Photography 2017 Exhibition of Excellence Award winners, including Grand Prize winners Mr. Ansten and Mr. Breitkopf, and Honorable Mention Award winners will continue until November 19 (Sunday) at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum.

The New Cosmos of Photography is Canon's cultural support project to discover, nurture, and support new photographers who pursue new possibilities in creative photographic expression. The annual contest, launched in 1991, has been open to the public regardless of the age or nationality of entrants or the number or format of entered works. As such, the contest encourages the creation of original works that push the boundaries of photography's potential and systematically assists and nurtures award winners through exhibitions and published collections of their winning works as well as through publicity on the New Cosmos of Photography website. To date, the New Cosmos of Photography contest has accepted 27,406 entries from both individuals and groups, and has turned out a great number of outstanding photographers who are enjoying widespread success around the world. As a result, the contest has come to be regarded today as a gateway to success for new photographers.

About the winning entry
"The people who appear in this film essay, which is also a work of art, are attempting to resolve the contradictions in their existence and to find some kind of meaning, through snow and cod, and occasionally through bizarre means. This film serves as a metaphor, with both documentation aspects and dramatic aspects, and takes up the question of what is today's Arctic and the issue of managing resources in a region of rising geopolitical tensions."

Comments from the Grand Prize winner
Asked about their thoughts on receiving the award, Mr. Ansten and Mr. Breitkopf said, "We've not expected to get the new cosmos of photography in "moving still Image." We find this surprising and we want to say thank you to all the team members who are included to make this happen."

Comments from the selection committee
The following is a comment from Ms. Hiraki Sawa, a member of the selection committee who selected Mr. Ansten and Mr. Breitkopf's work at the Excellence Award selection stage: "This year, Mr. Ansten and Mr. Breitkopf were chosen as the Grand Prize winners at a public meeting of the Grand Prize selection committee. When I saw their work, it really caught my eye and I could sense they had a high level of talent as artists. What's more, the flow of their images and their editing techniques were superb and produced excellent results. Going forward, I would like to see them put out new works one after another."

Pulitzer Prize-Winning Photojournalist to Be Honored for Her Acclaimed Work, Too Young to Wed, at the Third Annual Awards Ceremony in NYC

MELVILLE, N.Y., November 6, 2017 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to celebrate world-renowned photographer and Explorer of Light Stephanie Sinclair at the third annual Imaging Alliance’s “Salute Photographers Who Give Back” Awards, Nov. 6 at the SVA Theatre in New York City. Stephanie will be honored for her program Too Young to Wed, a nonprofit multimedia platform that seeks to raise awareness of child marriage while empowering girls in these circumstances to express their creativity through photography. Sinclair will be among three honorees at this year’s ceremony. In addition, images from Too Young to Wed created by child marriage survivors will be on display at the World Photo Press exhibition from now until November 26 at Dupont Underground in Washington, D.C.

The Imaging Alliance will salute Sinclair alongside two other professional photographers: Brooke Shaden and Jerry Ghionis. The trio is being honored for using their talent and passion to give back and heighten awareness of important social and cultural issues through the power of imaging. In addition, one SVA student who has used photography to educate and create awareness will be awarded the Anthony M. Ruotolo Photojournalism Award. The event will feature presentations by the three honorees followed by a short Q&A with the audience. Robert Caplin of The Photo Brigade will serve as master of ceremonies.

“It is with the utmost pleasure that at this year’s Imaging Alliance Awards we get to celebrate our very own Explorer of Light Stephanie Sinclair and her amazing work,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A. “With her Too Young to Wed initiative, Stephanie has dedicated her life for the last decade to inspiring change through imaging. We truly feel that she represents the embodiment of what our company stands for—an unwavering dedication to help people tap their creativity to reach new heights of their potential.”

Stephanie Sinclair is a New York-based photojournalist who has gained international acclaim for her attention to human rights issues. Through her photography and her Too Young to Wed foundation, she has shone a spotlight on issues such as child marriage, female circumcision, war and polygamy. Too Young to Wed provides visual evidence of the human rights challenges faced by women and girls around the world. The mission is to amplify courageous voices and build a global community dedicated to ending child and forced marriages, and to support positive change for these girls through programs such as literacy classes and the Tehani Photo Workshop. Named after an 8-year-old child bride in Yemen, this five-day workshop brings together 18 brave child marriage survivors to help them gain the skills to become budding photojournalists while learning tools to manage their trauma, express themselves, advocate for girls’ rights and become mentors to subsequent workshop participants.

Since the creation of the program in 1995, Canon’s Explorers of Light have been leaders in their respective fields, garnering awards and accolades for their work. These individuals work with Canon extensively as representatives, ambassadors, educators and as role models for aspiring creative artists. They participate in workshops, seminars, gallery showings and personal appearances throughout the United States.

In addition to her honor at the Imaging Alliance Award, images of Too Young to Wed will be on display at the World Photo Press exhibition. World Photo Press exhibition, on display from now until Nov. 26 at Dupont Underground in Washington, D.C., is a partnership with the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), which named Sinclair its 2017 Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism award winner for her extensive work on child marriage. Along with images from Too Young To Wed created by child marriage survivors, the exhibit will feature the work of Louisa Gouliamaki and Nicole Tung, who earned honorable mentions from the IWMF, which highlights the role of leading women photographers and videographers as well as show powerful images of the struggles of young women suffering from tremendous inequality.
