High Speed and High Image Quality
EOS R10 is equipped with Canon’s newly developed high-speed 24.2MP APS-C size Canon CMOS Sensor combined with high-speed DIGIC X digital image processor, making it capable of providing up to approximately 23FPS[2] high-speed continuous shooting with electronic shutter[3] (or up to 15FPS[4] with mechanical shutter) with Auto Focus/ Auto Exposure Tracking. The EOS R10 offers a maximum 1/16000 second for electronic shutter, effectively freezing images of fast-moving objects while in motion, and support shooting Long Exposure (Bulb). The newly added RAW burst mode[5] captures RAW images at approx. 30FPS with approx. 1.33x cropped (approx. 13.6MP), with Auto Focus and Auto Exposure Tracking. With “Pre-Shooting” enabled, it will record images up to 0.5 seconds before the shutter release is pressed, especially suitable for capturing unanticipated moments of subjects.

Benefited from the DIGIC X digital image processor, EOS R10 also realizes a wide standard ISO range of 100-32000, expandable to ISO 51200, to help deliver low-noise, high-quality images even in low-light situations. EOS R10 also supports HDR PQ high dynamic range shooting with 10-bit HEIF recording format to cater the popularity of HDR display. The built-in “Digital Lens Optimizer” (DLO) and “Clarity” setting also helps to output high quality and ready-to-use JPEG images. Moreover, Canon has developed a new “Cloud RAW Development”[6] service, which uses image processing algorithm developed through “deep learning" technology to process RAW images into JPEG/HEIF images with enhanced image quality.

EOS R10 incorporates new imaging function for or the first time in EOS camera to expand creative expression. The first one is the Panorama Shot (SCN mode), which capable of capturing up to 200 shots at a time and let the camera merge them to form a high-resolution, high-quality panorama shot automatically. The second new feature added is in-camera “Depth Composition” function which automatically merges focus bracketed images taken with focus bracketing into an image that is clearly in focus from front to back, allowing users to check the composition results on site.

Advanced subject recognition and tracking auto focus inherited from the renowned EOS R3
With Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, EOS R10 offers extensive autofocus coverage at up to 100% of the entire image area[7] and 651 AF zones, making precise focusing and tracking of subjects possible even when they move to the edge of the frame and allows for greater compositional freedom. EOS R10 features EOS iTR[8] AF X inherited from EOS R3, its AF algorithm developed using Deep Learning technology provides high performance Subject Recognition and AF tracking of people, animals[9] and vehicles[10]. In addition to enhanced eye detection which is now possible even when the subject is obscured by shadow, hair, make-up or a face mask, People detection features enhanced head detection for athleteswearing goggles or face masks during winter sports, a body detection algorithm has also been added for situations where large movements block or hide the face or the head of the subject. Animal detection now capable of steadily tracking the animal's body, face and eyes can help photographers capture the precious wildlife moment with ease. Vehicles detection is capable of “overall” detection of fast-moving motorsports (automobiles and motorcycles) or more specific focus of the driver’s helmet using “spot” detection, which significantly reduce the opportunities of out-of-focus.

The EOS R10 also uses the same AF controls and settings as the EOS R3, allowing photographers to fully utilize the fast-paced shooting environment. The advanced tracking system allows simply “grabbing” the parts of a subject to be tracked using the 1-point AF or zone AF for the camera to determine the optimum tracking position and perform subject detection and tracking. Subject tracking is now possible from any one of the 8 AF Area modes, including 1-point AF or Flexible Zone AF. During AF or continuous shooting, AF frame or Tracking subject can be switched with Multi-controller, and Subject Tracking can be turned on or off (Required button customization) to meet the needs of shooting. The new Flexible Zone AF Area that allows customization of AF Area has also been added to bring even greater freedom in photography.

Canon Second Quarter 2022 Results : Speech Summery

As for the second quarter, due to things such as the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict and Shanghai’s COVID lockdown, and accelerating global inflation, there is growing uncertainty about the future direction of the global economy. Despite this, demand for our products remained firm. That said, the impact from Shanghai’s COVID lockdown was larger than expected, and we were unable to produce products in the quantity we planned for in the second quarter. Though this will impact sales in the third quarter, we were able to expand sales in the second quarter by taking advantage of our inventory.

Net sales increased by 13.3% to 998.8 billion yen, or nearly 1 trillion yen. And we achieved our sixth consecutive quarter of net sales growth

As for profit, although the rise in material and logistical costs continue to affect us, in addition to adjusting prices, we raised the ratio of sales of high price range products, such as full-frame cameras and medium- to high-speed color MFDs. Additionally, by controlling the rise in expenses even while sales were increasing, we increased operating profit by 27.4%, significantly raising it to 98.5 billion yen.

As for income before income taxes and net income, due to rapid depreciation of the yen in June, and subsequent foreign exchange losses arising from foreign-currency-denominated borrowings of the parent company through the Group’s internal financing system, we posted a decrease of 0.7% to 85.2 billion yen and a decrease of 3.5% to 59.0 billion yen, respectively.

All of our Business Units posted higher sales and profit.

As for Printing, even though the number of people returning to the office is still on the way to recovery and the supply of products is not sufficient, thanks to structural reforms centered on overseas sales companies and the consolidation of product platforms to strengthen our foundation to deliver earnings, this business has maintained double-digit profitability.

As for Imaging, unit sales of camera bodies, because of product shortages, remained below those of last year. However, supported by strong sales of interchangeable lenses, we posted double-digit growth in both sales and profit, and our operating profit ratio increased to 16.1%.

Macquarie University supported by Canon Australia unveils new Telescope

Macquarie University’s unique telescope to help determine the fate of the Milky Way

Macquarie University’s unique telescope to help determine the fate of the Milky Way

Macquarie University, with support from Canon Australia, unveils the Huntsman Telescope: a ‘first of its kind’ array in the Southern Hemisphere to study the faintest, most elusive clues to better understand galaxy lifecycles.

Sydney, AUSTRALIA – 22 July 2022: Macquarie University supported by Canon Australia today officially unveils The Huntsman Telescope – a novel telescope concept designed to ‘hunt’ for and study ultra-faint galaxies and astronomical objects in the Southern Sky. Comprising an array of 10 commercially available Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS II super-telephoto lenses, the Huntsman Telescope is the only telescope of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere1.

Located at the Siding Spring Observatory near Coonabarabran, NSW, the Huntsman Telescope will perform deep southern sky surveys to provide researchers with a unique understanding about galaxy formation and evolution; how galaxies form, how they grow, how they engage with structures that surround them, and what happens when galaxies collide.

According to Principal Investigator of the Huntsman Telescope, Dr Lee Spitler, from Macquarie University’s School of Mathematical & Physical Sciences and Australian Astronomical Optics- Macquarie, the Huntsman Telescope’s work will be crucial to understanding what might happen should our Milky Way Galaxy have a head-on collision with its neighbour, the Andromeda Galaxy – an event theorised to occur in 4.5 billion years.

“The Huntsman Telescope is pioneering the way in which we view our Southern skies by capturing images of the faintest galaxy structures that conventional telescopes simply couldn’t,” says Dr Spitler. “The ability to observe the remnants of galaxies colliding with each other and searching for the faintest and smallest galaxies in the universe, will help us understand the potential fate of the Milky Way in the far distant future.”

Inspired by the innovative Dragonfly Telephoto Array, based in the United States, the Huntsman Telescope comprises 10 ‘off-the-shelf’ Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS II super-telephoto lenses which are usually used by professional sports or wildlife photographers.

Part of Canon’s L-series professional lens range, the second-generation Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L lens has superb anti-reflection properties, owing to one of the first applications of Canon’s patented nano-fabricated coatings with sub-wavelength structures on optical glasses. The coated lens array contrasts to a conventional mirror telescope, whose imperfectly polished surface can introduce subtle errors that ruin faint, extended structures surrounding galaxies.

Furthermore, each lens in the array is equipped with a single monolithic wide-field detector covering six square degrees. With multiple redundant lines of sight, the Huntsman is able to achieve extremely accurate modelling of the night sky emission and produce ultra-clear renderings of our universe.

“For 80 years, Canon has been committed to developing precision optical technologies that exceed the needs of our customers, and we’re proud that our EF-lenses will play a role in helping Australian scientists tackle some of the most critical questions in astronomy today,” said Kotaro Fukushima, Managing Director, Canon Oceania

“With our origins in camera development, Canon has diversified its business and technological potential to become essential to a wide range of fields - from space exploration to printing, medical equipment and security - with the purpose of solving diverse social challenges and enriching the lives of all global citizens.”

“In combining our innovative imaging technology with AI, cloud, and other IT solutions, Canon is helping to unlock the next stage of the future.”Kotaro Fukushima, Managing Director, Canon Oceania

Of the nine members of the Huntsman Telescope’s technical and science team, five are Macquarie PhD students, who are benefiting from the unique opportunity to have hands-on training with such high-tech equipment.

According to Sarah Caddy, PhD Candidate from the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at Macquarie University, in observing the Dragonfly Array program in the Northern Skies, the approach of combining individual EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS II super-telephoto lenses will enable the Huntsman telescope to scale with the needs of scientists in the future. Recent upgrades to the telescope are already set to further enhance Huntsman’s abilities in studying the Universe.

“The Huntsman’s new suite of powerful computers enable each lens or ‘eye’ of the Huntsman to operate independently of each other. This will allow the telescope to autonomously detect ultra-fast transient events like stellar flares from distant stars, or even more exotic phenomenon like aiding the search for origin of fast radio bursts that continue to elude astronomers,” says Ms Caddy.

The Huntsman Telescope project is a jointly-led project from Macquarie University School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences and the Australian Astronomical Optics Macquarie, both within the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Macquarie University. The project is supported financially by a Discovery Project awarded through the Australian Research Council.

The Huntsman Telescope will be open to the public on 1 October 2022, as part of the annual StarFest.

Firmware Updates to Canon EOS R3, EOS R5 and EOS R6

Canon introduces more speed and endurance to the R System with its latest firmware
22nd July 2022

Based on user feedback, Canon’s latest firmware update allows new levels of speed and efficiency

Firmware Updates to Canon EOS R3, EOS R5 and EOS R6

Sydney, AUSTRALIA - 22 July 2022: Canon Australia today announces firmware updates in response to feedback and requests from users. For the EOS R3, firmware v1.20 sets new standards for high speed, while the EOS R5 firmware v1.60 extends recording times and the EOS R6 firmware v1.60 streamlines workflows.

Capture every second of the action
The EOS R3 is already a powerhouse for news and sports and the v1.20 firmware update further improves on its incredible speed. With the new custom high-speed continuous shooting setting, users can capture at frame rates from 30fps up to an astonishing 195fps1, at full resolution in JPEG, HEIF or RAW. This gives photographers the ability to capture the definitive moment of action, such as when the bat connects with the ball in baseball or when a bird of prey attacks.

It’s not just lightning-fast stills this upgrade offers. EOS R3 users will also be able to capture Full HD movies at 240p, to achieve frame rate speeds previously only possible on dedicated video cameras. 240p recording slows down the action by a factor of six, for smooth slow motion that’s perfect for seeing pivotal moments in a fast-moving situation.

Streamlined workflows
To ensure photojournalists and reporters can beat the competition, the v1.20 update simplifies operation and enables them to cut down the time between capture and publication. Featured in the newly launched EOS R7, Cloud RAW Image Processing2 will now be available in the EOS R3, applying sophisticated deep learning processing within image.canon to improve the resolution and sharpness, whilst also reducing the potential for moire in images. This also supports neural network imaging processing that provides stunning, AI based noise reduction without the loss of detail. The EOS R3 also gains in-camera compositing (focus stacking) of images taken with focus bracketing, to create images with a great depth of field and sharpness - perfect for macro photography. This function is also possible when used with the Speedlite EL-1.

In response to feedback, users can now assign a 1.6x crop or other crop ratios to a custom button on the EOS R3, which acts as a built-in extender so that photographers can quickly and easily zoom in on newsworthy moments.

Enhancing video capabilities
Addressing feedback from vloggers, that the edges of captured video would shake in selfie-mode when shooting with an ultra wide-angle lens, the EOS R3, EOS R5 and EOS R6 now include wobble correction within the Digital Movie IS function. This correction is in addition to the conventional shift correction of Digital Movie IS, for much more stable shooting. A time-lapse movie function has also been added to the EOS R3, with the ability to retain time lapse movie settings if the camera is powered down accidently.

The v1.60 firmware for the EOS R5 will also bring a popular feature of the EOS R3 to the EOS R5 – Auto Power Off Temperature – which (depending on conditions) enables longer recording times to be achieved.

Both lenses take advantage of the large diameter and short back focus that the EOS R camera system is renowned for, which results in both a compact optical system and excellent quality throughout the whole image.

Wide-angle with Beautiful Bokeh

One of the key benefits of using the RF 24MM F1.8 MACRO IS STM on a full-frame EOS R camera body is its minimal form factor. This lens is also identical to the highly popular RF35mm f/1.8 IS STM lens in size, making it great for travel and landscape photography or as an everyday lens.

When mounted on an APS-C body, the focal length becomes 38mm, which is closer to the human eye’s field of view, making it suitable for portraits or street photography. At f/1.8, the RF 24MM F1.8 MACRO IS STM is at least two stops brighter than a typical kit zoom lens, allowing it to create beautiful bokeh, a stunning background blur effect which cannot be achieved by a zoom lens. The large aperture also makes it an ideal lens for astrophotography.

The RF 24MM F1.8 MACRO IS STM is also able to double up as a macro lens, which is an uncommon attribute for wide-angle lens. With a minimum focusing distance of only 0.14m, it can achieve up to 0.5x magnification. This combination of 24mm with f/1.8 aperture creates a unique wide-angle close-up with beautiful bokeh, making it ideal for food or flower shots during travel or as an everyday lens.

The RF24 MM F1.8 MACRO IS STM has a native lens image stabilization (Optical IS) of up to 5 stops and can go up to 6.5 stops when coupled with a compatible camera body with in-body image stabilization (In-Body IS). This enables precise snapshots with minimal camera shake in a dim environment, with low shutter speeds or other scenarios prone to camera shake.

Coupled with the silent Stepping Motor (STM), the RF 24MM F1.8 MACRO IS STM is perfect for videos. Vloggers who often use a small tripod or selfie stick will appreciate its light weight and compact size.

Versatile with Near Macro Capabilities

An ultra-wide angle zoom lens is usually expensive to own and the RF 15-30MM F4.5-6.3 IS STM is designed to meet the budget of photography enthusiasts while providing a practical focal length range that covers 15-30mm. Weighing approximately 390g, its small size makes it great for those who travel. Compared to the RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM lens, the RF 15-30MM F4.5-6.3 IS STM is approx. 53% lighter (approx. 390g vs approx. 840g).

At 15mm, the RF 15-30MM F4.5-6.3 IS STM covers a view much wider than any standard kit lens, allowing users to include the atmosphere or environment along with the subject, especially in small rooms or tight spaces where backing up is not possible. The wider 15mm end is also great for interior shots and breathtaking landscape shots.

At the 30mm zoom telephoto end, users can capture images utilizing a natural angle of view and perspective that is closer to the human eye.

When mounted on an APS-C EOS R camera, the RF 15-30MM F4.5-6.3 IS STM has a very versatile 24-48mm zoom range, offering a wider angle of view at the wide end compared to a kit lens. The lens can still be used even if the user switches to a full-frame camera in the future, making it an excellentfuture-proof investment.

The RF 15-30MM F4.5-6.3 IS STM corrects chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range with the use of two Ultra-low Dispersion lenses, achieving crisp and clear images with minimal colour blur. The RF 15-30MM F4.5-6.3 IS STM has a native lens image stabilization (Optical IS) of up to 5.5 stops, which can go up to 7 stops of image stabilisation when paired with a compatible camera body with in-body image stabilisation (In-Body IS). This enables low light photography with minimal camera shake and achieve images with low shutter speed that usually would require a tripod.

RF 15-30MM F4.5-6.3 IS STM can achieve a magnification of up to 0.52x on the 15mm wide end while in manual focus mode for close-up shots. The 319 has a minimum focusing distance of just 0.128m.

With wide angle capabilities, both the RF 24MM F1.8 MACRO IS STM and RF 15-30MM F4.5-6.3 IS STM will come in handy for indoor photography which are often limited by space constraints, while their compact and lightweight size make them a breeze to use outdoors. Their wide angle(s) of view, built-in IS and smooth autofocus for video make them well-suited for shooting videos on top of delivering excellent still images

RF 24MM F1.8 MACRO IS STM- MRP: ` 58 495.00/U incl. of all taxes, will be available in stores from Mid-July

Canon I-SENSYS MF750 Series Printer

LONDON, UK, 7ᵗʰ July 2022: Today, Canon Europe announces the launch of three new models in its i-SENSYS range: two in the MF750 series of colour multifunction printers, plus the LBP673Cdw, a dedicated single-function colour printer. Fast-moving environments like retail, for example, often need to print or scan documents quickly in a shared workspace. With simple, out-of-the-box cloud connectivity, the new i-SENSYS devices allow partners to maximise sales potential thanks to their straightforward functionality and flexibility.

Joe Courts, Head of Product Marketing, Digital Printing & Solutions at Canon UK & Ireland says: “Innovation is key for meeting customers’ evolving needs. That’s why we have refreshed most of the i-SENSYS range this year, to ensure our devices are optimised to answer users’ growing requirements and support our partner community in expanding their market opportunities as a result.”

Empowering SMEs with premium productivity features

With printing speeds of up to 33pm and 100ipm scanning speeds for the MF750 series, the new range takes productivity to the next level. The devices can also handle a wide variety of media, perfect for those who work with different sized documents daily, such as receipts and labels.

Nauticam Underwater Housing for Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II Camera

THE NAUTICAM NA-G7XMKII HOUSING

NA-G7XMKII is the latest iteration in a lineup of advanced housings for very capable compact cameras supported by Nauticam. Many features found on professional DSLR systems have been integrated into this system, and the result is an underwater housing that allows the user to harness the full potential of this advanced compact camera in water.

The basic functions and ergonomic enhancements that Nauticam users have grown to know and love are incorporated in NA-G7XMKII. The housing is machined from a solid block of aluminum, then hard anodized to seal out corrosive salt water. It is closed via a simple, yet secure locking rotary latch. The right side of the housing is sculpted to fit the palm of the user’s hand, and Nauticam’s two-stage shutter release lever provides clear differentiation between the half press and full press shutter release positions. All functions are clearly labeled.

The Nauticam leak alarm and vacuum monitoring system is installed as standard equipment. This system provides an audible and visual alert to any water entry in the housing, and when combined with an accessory M14 Vacuum Valve (#25624) the water tight integrity of the system can be tested before ever entering the water and monitored during every dive.

Expert product design, modern manufacturing techniques, top quality materials backed by a two year warranty, and a critical focus on the user experience combine to produce the premier system for Canon Powershot G7 X Mark II. The Nauticam NA-G7XMKII.

Additional Housing Specifications
  • Flash Triggering Fiber optic bulkhead pre-installed
  • Replacement O-ring 90135
  • Vacuum System Electronics pre-installed

THE N50 PORT SYSTEM

The NA-G7 X Mark II ships with the “Standard” Port but other ports are available from the N50 system. Supplied with the housing, this port allows full zoom through and features a 67mm threaded front for attaching accessory macro lenses or a flip-adapter. This port is ideal for mid-range fish portraiture or close-up and macro work with add on wet-lenses.

INTEGRATED VACUUM CHECK AND LEAK DETECTION SYSTEM

The Nauticam vacuum check and leak detection system is shipped with NA-G7XMKII as standard equipment. Combined with an accessory vacuum valve (PN 25624), this monitoring system provides constant updates on the water tight and safe-to-dive status of the housing. A simple color coded LED lighting system lets the user know that the vacuum is solid, or that the housing is losing vacuum. Leak detection is built into the same circuit, so if there is water intrusion, an audible and visual indication will occur.

The Nauticam system is temperature compensated, eliminating false alarms caused by a change in outside temperature, or from a camera heating up on an action packed dive.

WHAT'S IN THE NA-G7XII BOX?
  • NA-G7XII housing
  • N50 Standard Port
  • Instruction manual
  • Spare silicone rubber housing o-ring
  • O-ring remover
  • CR2032 battery (for moisture alarm)
