Hear from top photography experts in a range of talks that form part of Canon’s 2021 Student Development Programme – sign up here

Free and open to all, highlights include Canon’s Thinking Social-First panel discussion, focusing on the unique opportunities (and challenges) social platforms can bring photographers of all levels

Don’t make the mistake of ignoring social media in the early stages of your career - as many as 1,074 photos are uploaded to Instagram every second, and 68 per cent of users go to Instagram to interact with their favourite creators¹. The Thinking Social-First panel answers questions like: “How can I get the attention of potential employers using social media? What are the risks involved with uploading my images publicly? How can I use social media to build a community?” Whether you’re an industry trailblazer or a complete photography newbie, social media can expand your horizons and help your hard work reach entirely new audiences. Trust the word of Canon’s knowledgeable expert panellists, including:
  • Documentary photographer and Canon Ambassador Gabriele Galimberti, who boasts over 278,000 followers on Instagram and frequently uses social media as a research tool to contact, discover, and produce stories. Documentary subjects who twenty years ago would have been unreachable, can now easily be traced and approached through the formidable power of the internet.
  • Laura El-Tantawy, whose award-winning work examines the experience of living between East and West, will offer a unique perspective on subjects such as how to be mindful of the information you supply, adhering to local government regulations while travelling, and how you can protect your work from cyber-theft.
  • Lars Lindemann, Director of Photography and Deputy Visual Director at GEO and PM, is a former freelance photo editor and photographer who has been on the judging panel for prestigious competitions such as the World Press Photo Contest. He will be discussing how social media can be used to source photographers and to network throughout your career.
  • Anastasia Taylor-Lind is a TED fellow who works for magazines such as National Geographic covering trending issues relating to women and violence. If you’re a risk-taker who still wants to tread carefully with sensitive topics, Taylor-Lind is a great authority on how to approach your interview subjects with compassion and still create quality investigative content. She will be focusing on creating social-first content, and how to use social media to get commissions.

If breaking into the traditional media mainstream is your goal, you’ll want to hear from internationally renowned photography and media institutions such as Politiken, Reuters and The Guardian who will all be providing unrivalled insight in additional talks. Topics such as the power of multimedia, the role of grants in catapulting careers, insights on hiring photographers, and power dynamics in portraiture will challenge you to rethink everything you think you know about photography, as well as encourage you to look towards the future and consider what your individual style can bring to the industry.

Gabriele Galimberti, Documentary Photographer and Canon Ambassador said: "I’m delighted to have the opportunity to encourage aspiring photographers and share my experience on telling the stories of people through portraits and film. Social media is ever-changing and a vital part of my research process - I look forward to discussing my insights with Canon’s team of panellists, and hopefully helping the next generation of photography stars.”

Susie Donaldson, ITCG European Marketing Director for Canon EMEA said: “For the second year running, the Canon Student Development Programme is taking place entirely digitally, meaning that our incredible panel talks are easily accessible across the world and available to the widest pool of aspiring talent. Focusing on topics that we know are most relevant to those just starting out in their photography careers, we hope that these talks will be the stepping stone students need to make that leap into the industry as professionals.”

Since 2017, over 800 students have attended the Student Development Programme, and talents have gone on to launch incredible careers at titles such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Canon claims top share of press cameras used at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, highlights DSLR and mirrorless cameras and remote image capture technologies that assisted press photographers

TOKYO, August 20, 2021—As a Gold Partner (Still Camera and Desktop Printer) of the Tokyo 2020 Games, Canon helped support professional photographers through the establishment of a camera service booth inside the Main Press Center so they were in the best condition possible to capture photos of athletes engaged in high-level competition during the Opening Ceremonies, Closing Ceremonies and competition events of the Tokyo 2020 Games.

Canon claims top share of press cameras used at Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

Canon is active behind the scenes at a wide variety of sporting events, aiming to achieve "zero downtime" for professional photographers so they are never forced to stop and miss definitive moments of these intense competitions. For decades, the Company has built a reliable reputation and helped support journalists on the front lines through a wide range of services.

In addition to such products as the company's professional flagship camera, the EOS-1D X Mark III, used by a large number of photographers thanks to its high reliability and ease-of-use, Canon provided on-site support during the eight competition events1 of the Tokyo 2020 Games. Canon achieved the top share, approximately 55%2, of cameras used by professional press photographers at the event.

Alongside the EOS-1D X Mark III, Canon's EOS R5 and EOS R6 mirrorless cameras were widely used. What's more, test units of the in-development EOS R3—with high performance and high reliability designed to meet the needs of professional and enthusiast users—were used by a limited number of professional photographers, who gave the camera high praise.

Comment from EOS R3 test user Patrick Smith of Getty Images, the official photo agency of the Tokyo 2020 Games

I am honored to be given the opportunity to test EOS R3 at the world's largest sporting event. Thanks to the camera's incredibly fast AF and light weight, I had a much easier time holding and operating the camera for long periods of time. The 30 frames-per-second high-speed continuous shooting also proved excellent. I believe this camera will show us what next-generation performance is like.

Canon's Robotic Camera System CR-S700R, which enables image capture from a variety of viewpoints and angles, was also installed in multiple locations, contributing to the creation of innovative new ways to capture photos.

Canon will continue striving to create competitive, highly reliable products and, through such on-site support of journalists as equipment maintenance, contribute to the further advancement of photographic and videographic expression.

Canon Anti-Counterfeit Consumer Education Microsite Update

Canon Anti-Counterfeit Consumer Education Microsite Update
Canon U.S.A., Inc. Focuses on Consumer Safety with an Anti-Counterfeit Consumer Education Microsite Update

MELVILLE, NY, August 9, 2021 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is taking the opportunity to spotlight its commitment to anti-counterfeit consumer education and safety awareness. Canon has a longstanding commitment to fight against the proliferation of counterfeit Canon products by helping to protect customers from receiving non-Canon products that are hazardous and can cause damage to their equipment. As part of this effort, Canon has updated its anti-counterfeit consumer education microsite, providing expanded information about commonly counterfeited Canon products, as well as informing consumers about the battery recognition technology that is built into certain Canon cameras and camcorders. The website can be found at usa.canon.com/aboutcounterfeits.

With the surge of online shopping, the availability of counterfeits for many brands has persisted and grown, leaving consumers unaware about counterfeits and unable to make informed purchasing decisions. The Canon anti-counterfeit consumer education microsite includes updated tips on how to spot counterfeits that unlawfully bear the Canon logo as well as a discussion about the difference between gray market and counterfeit goods for consumers who may not know how to distinguish between them. The microsite also offers consumers handy links to anti-counterfeit product advisories and resources, as well as a link to some valuable information that Canon provides to its consumers concerning another form of fakery being offered to the public-- some service and support companies passing themselves off as authorized Canon repair facilities.

Canon promotes safety by partnering with its consumers and sharing technical expertise. On the microsite, U.S. consumers are encouraged to use Canon U.S.A’s most important safety education tool – its anti-counterfeit hotline at 1-855-46-CANON – that allows Canon consumers to report suspicious Canon goods so that they can be authenticated by Canon before use.

“At Canon, we have invested deeply to ensure our technical staff is thoroughly trained and well equipped with the knowledge and tools required to properly identify non-genuine merchandise. The specific combination of our formal processes, access to proprietary manufacturing attributes, training, and tools available exclusively to our Canon service staff, allows us to discern even the most intricate differences between genuine and non-genuine items,” says Jason Fligman, Senior Director & General Manager of Customer Support Operations for the Imaging Technologies and Communications Group at Canon U.S.A., Inc. “We are very aware of the quality and safety issues that are common amongst counterfeit Canon products, and committed to assisting our valued customers in ensuring the authenticity of Canon-branded items.”

Canon encourages consumers who seek to buy genuine Canon products to purchase them through authorized dealers by using a dealer locator link on Canon’s website or through a brand-based online store, such as Canon Direct. Canon also pursues counterfeiters in the U.S. and around the world to protect its customers from potentially unsafe products that unlawfully use the Canon name, as well as to protect the value, trusted reputation and loyalty that the Canon brand has acquired over decades in producing high-quality, safe and reliable products.
