Canon to support news media at Tokyo 2020 Games, releases photos of on-location service center aiming for "Zero Downtime"

As a Gold Partner (Still Camera and Desktop Printer) of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 (henceforth, Tokyo 2020 Games), Canon has established a photo service center for photographers—the largest such facility of the event—within the Main Press Center (MPC), where members of the international press gather.

At the photo service center, with the aim of realizing "Zero Downtime," Canon will provide speedy maintenance service, equipment repairs and loaning of replacement equipment during repair wait times to ensure that photographers don't miss their chance at capturing decisive moments of this intense competition due to equipment trouble.

Check out these photos of Canon's professional photographer support booth, which is ordinarily off-limits to visitors!

*At the photo service center, strong action will be taken to ensure that photographers who visit the booth and the staff working there are safe and secure, and that the booth is operated as a safe and thoroughly protected environment.

Canon reveals stunning winning image of its Redline Challenge competition
London, United Kingdom, 26ᵗʰ July 2021 – Canon is thrilled to reveal the winner of its Light in the Dark themed Redline Challenge photography competition as Piotr Skrzypiec from Poland, now living in Slovenia, who wowed judges with his striking photo,

Lost Highway. Piotr will receive over €14,000 worth of Canon kit including the EOS R5 and RF lenses to help take his craft to the next level along with a personal photography assignment and mentoring session with judge and Canon Ambassador, Lorenz Holder. Also announced today are the outstanding shortlisted photos.

Canon announces the winner of its first Redline Challenge photo competition, with the theme of Light in the Dark, and a shortlist of exceptional images from over 36,000 entries

Canon reveals stunning winning image of its Redline Challenge competition
“When fog happens only a few times per year, it’s very hard to get there at the right moment. In those conditions, it was really amazing to see,” shares Piotr, the photographer behind the winning image, Lost Highway, captured on the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV at 30 sec, f/8 and ISO 800. © Piotr Skrzypiec

The winning image is Lost Highway by Piotr Skrzypiec, which shows the 1,000-metre long Črni Kal Viaduct in Slovenia shrouded in fog

Commenting on his win, Piotr Skrzypiec said: “It’s hard to describe how it feels - it is both a big surprise and a huge achievement, especially as when I entered, I submitted three pictures and discovered that all of them had been shortlisted. The prize is the best set of equipment I could imagine, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the Canon EOS R5. It looks like the perfect tool for the kind of photography I do – landscapes, wildlife and macro.”

The winning photo and shortlist were chosen from 36,195 images by Canon’s esteemed panel of judges in a video hosted by vlogger and photographer Kai Wong, which is available to watch on the Canon YouTube channel with behind the scenes insight into the judging process. Alongside Lorenz Holder, judges include Canon Ambassador and world-class documentary photographer Laura El-Tantawy, award-winning artistic director and curator Monica Allende, Senior Editor for The Wider Image, Gabrielle Fonseca Johnson and European Marketing Director for Canon EMEA, Susie Donaldson.

From moody street scenes to neon-soaked portraits, entrants of the Redline Challenge pushed the boundaries of their creativity with new styles and techniques. The shortlisted photographers listed below were selected for their ability to reimagine the theme of Light in the Dark – creating images which were both technically and interpretively original.

Judge and ITCG European Marketing Director for Canon EMEA, Susie Donaldson said: “As a judge of the Redline Challenge, I was blown away by how many unique interpretations of the theme there were and the technical ability of the entrants. There were a number of incredible photos but the winning image, Lost Highway, had such impact we just kept coming back to it. It really reflected the theme and the times we are in right now, perfectly capturing the idea of emerging from something, taking a new turn into hopefully more positive times. Congratulations to all of the shortlisted photographers and to Piotr, our winner – we look forward to seeing what you capture with your new Canon kit!”

Canon Celebrates The Very Best In Photojournalism - 2021

Visa pour l’image 2021 – Canon celebrates the very best in photojournalism
Visa pour l’image 2021 – Canon celebrates the very best in photojournalism

London, United Kingdom 22ⁿᵈ July 2021 – For the 32ⁿᵈ year, Canon Europe is proud to announce it will partner with Visa pour l’image, one of the world’s leading photojournalism festivals, during the Pro Week – from 30ᵗʰ August – 4ᵗʰ September 2021. Celebrating the best in photojournalism, the long-standing partnership highlights Canon’s ongoing commitment to the craft of photojournalism and the photographers that capture some of the most important chapters in our history. From students learning new skills, to professionals exploring the world we live in, Canon’s alliance with Visa pour l’image champions emerging talent and creative storytelling with exciting initiatives, from the Canon Female Photojournalist Grant and Canon Video Grant through to Canon’s Student Development Programme.

The very best of female photojournalism

For the twenty-first year in a row, Canon and Visa pour l’image will be presenting the Canon Female Photojournalist Grant to an outstanding photographer in recognition of her contribution to photojournalism. The 2021 recipient, Acacia Johnson, will receive €8,000 to carry out her project in Alaska – To Know The Earth from Above: The Bush Pilots Connecting Rural Alaska. Currently, only 20 per cent of Alaska is accessible by road, and dozens of its remote settlements, largely Alaskan Native communities, rely on bush aircraft for essential services, including food, medical care, and emergency transport. Starting in her hometown of Anchorage, the Grant allows Johnson to put this community into light through large-format portraits of pilots with their aircraft and aerial photographs of aircraft in flight in the Alaskan landscape.

Both Johnson and last year’s recipient of the Female Photojournalist Grant, Turkish photographer Sabiha Çimen (Hafiz: Guardians of the Qur'an), will be showcasing their bodies of work at Visa pour l’image 2022.

Canon’s Video Grant

Celebrating creative documentary making and recognising the best emerging talent, Canon together with Visa pour l’image are pleased to be presenting Camille Millerand with the second Canon Video Grant for a short film documentary. Millerand will use the €8,000 funding to work on his project The Invisibles, which will focus on illegal workers who are an essential part of France’s economic activity – he will also receive the loan of pioneering Canon professional video equipment to support his work.

The documentary will be screened at the 2022 festival alongside the work of 2020’s inaugural recipient of the Canon Video Grant – French-Swiss photographer and filmmaker Michaël Zumstein – who’s short documentary, Bangui la coquette, looks at the organisation of Miss Central African Republic.

Inspiring future photojournalists

2021 sees the fifth edition of the Canon Student Development Programme – dedicated to those looking to pursue a career in photography. Running during Pro Week from 1st – 4th September, and being held digitally for the second time, Canon has offered over 200 students from across Europe, Middle East and Africa the opportunity to participate in this intensive developmental programme. This initiative aims to enhance their skills and advance students’ careers by introducing them to some of the top professionals in the industry, through lectures and portfolio reviews. There will be 21 professional photographers, including Canon Ambassadors – Jérôme Sessini, Marco Longari, Muhammed Muheisen, Aïda Muluneh and Magnus Wennman – and acclaimed industry professionals reviewing student portfolios. Some of the photo editors and curators participating include: Fiona Shields (The Guardian), Chiara Bardelli Nonino (Vogue Italia), Whitney Richardson (The New York Times), Jay Davis (Getty), Mohamed Somji (Gulf Photo Plus) and Lars Lindemann (GEO).

Starting on 1st September and open to all visitors who register with Canon, there will be a series of inspirational and educational lectures – taking place digitally – by world-renowned professionals. This year’s speakers include guests from Magnum, Politiken and Reuters who will share insights on ethics and moral responsibilities of photographers, what agencies and photo editors look for when hiring a photographer, the power of multimedia, and how to think social first.

Canon Ambassador Exhibitions

At the festival, a range of exhibitions will be held in Perpignan. Jérôme Gence – winner of the 2020 Pierre and Alexandra Boulat Award and Canon Ambassador – will be displaying Telework. His 2019 story presents digital nomads in Bali, where young people have escaped urban life and adopted remote working, enjoying a new low-cost routine amongst the sunshine and palm trees. Additionally, Canon Ambassador Gabriele Galimberti will be displaying his work, The Ameriguns – for this collective he travelled to the United States to meet proud gun-owners, taking portraits of them with their weapons, in their homes.

Canon Photo Service Center : Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020

Canon establishes professional photographer Photo service center inside the Tokyo 2020 Main Press Center
Canon establishes professional photographer Photo service center inside the Tokyo 2020 Main Press Center

TOKYO, July 19, 2021—Canon Inc. and Canon Marketing Japan Inc. announced today that the company will establish a photo service center for professional photographers in the Main Press Center (MPC), where members of the international press gather, during the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 (henceforth, Tokyo 2020 Games) with the purpose of ensuring photographers are as best-equipped as possible to capture exciting and definitive moments of top-class athletes.

Professional photographers around the world require camera manufacturers to develop state-of-the-art technologies and top-class-performance equipment, as well as provide a comprehensive network of meticulous service and support.

Thus far, Canon has provided on-site support for press photographers, including camera and lens maintenance and technological support, behind the scenes at major sporting events around the world. The Tokyo 2020 Games are no exception—there too, Canon will apply its professional support know-how acquired over its long history in order to provide flexible and appropriate support for photographers and the various requests and equipment troubles they may have.

The Tokyo 2020 Games Main Press Center, located in the West Hall of the Tokyo Big Sight convention center, is expected to receive many members of the international press. As a Gold Partner of the Tokyo 2020 Games (still cameras and desktop printers), Canon aims to contribute to the successful operation of the event. With this goal in mind, the company will establish the largest camera photo service center of this event within the MPC.

At the photo service center, which will operate under the motto of "Zero Downtime" to ensure that photographers don't miss their chance at capturing decisive moments of this intense competition due to equipment trouble or other such problems, Canon will provide speedy maintenance service, equipment repairs and loaning of replacement equipment so that photographers can always be ready and in the best possible condition.

The Canon photo service center will provide such equipment as the company's professional flagship camera, the EOS-1D X Mark III, as well as the EOS R5 and EOS R6 mirrorless cameras and super-telephoto lenses. In addition, elite and highly trained staff will be working on-site to support photographers until the end of the closing ceremonies of the Tokyo 2020 Games.

In addition, Canon's remote camera system will be used at the event venues. The Robotic Camera System CR-S700R enables digital interchangeable-lens cameras (DILC) to be operated remotely, including the ability to adjust shooting angles, and can be installed and used in locations at the event areas where human photographers cannot access, such as from ceilings.

Canon strives to support photographers aiming to capture historic and powerful moments of top-class athletes engaged in fierce competition and contribute to the promotion and development of photographic culture. In addition, the company will support the efforts of the media to deliver to people around the world moments of passion and excitement during the sporting world's premiere event, thus contributing to the promotion of the Olympic and Paralympic movement.

*The Canon photographer service center will take thorough precautions against the spread of COVID-19 infections in order to ensure that photographers and staff may use and operate the booth safely and with peace of mind.

Canon FD 800mm f/5.6 S.S.C. Lens

The FD 800mm f/5.6 S.S.C. (released in June 1976) - Canon's first interchangeable lens to adopt the white coating

Canon adopts a white paint coating for its L-series telephoto and super-telephoto lenses.

Canon developed the signature white of its lens barrels as a tool for photographers at international sporting events. The first such lenses* produced by the company, the FD600mm f/4.5 S.S.C. and FD800mm f/5.6 S.S.C. large-diameter super-telephoto lenses, were released in June 1976.

Compared with standard lenses, super-telephoto lenses are much larger, and therefore more prone to the effects of sunlight and are frequently used under the intense heat of the summer sun.

In order to reduce the adverse effects that heat has on the lens' optical performance, Canon adopted its signature white coating for its lens barrels, which reflects heat more effectively than black. Canon continues to improve this technology through such improvements as a proprietary heat shield lens barrel coating used by the EF400mm f/2.8L IS III USM and EF600mm f/4L IS III USM lenses (released in 2018).

At various sporting events held worldwide, there is often a "sea of white" in the photographers' section—rows upon rows of professionals using Canon lenses. Among photographers, these lenses gained the nickname "white lenses," and the color white came to be known as a marker of a high-performance professional lens.

*Among lenses for interchangeable-lens cameras. The lenses were used with the TV2000mm f/11 super-telephoto lens (released in September 1960) for broadcast cameras for broadcasting baseball matches.

Remote still photography image capture solution
Robotic Camera System CR-S700R

For on-location press at sports matches and other events, remote camera technology enables still photography from perspectives and angles that would not be possible through conventional means. Allowing photographers to operate their cameras from a distance, this technology is becoming increasingly widespread.

In February 2020, Canon released the Robotic Camera System CR-S700R solution for capturing still photos using interchangeable-lens cameras* via remote operation.

The Robotic Camera System CR-S700R, developed in response to and in order to meet the needs of users worldwide, supports the still image capture for press photographers.

*Compatible with the following camera and lens models:
EOS-1D X Mark III (released in February 2020), EOS-1D X Mark II (released in February 2016), EF11-24mm f/4L USM (released in February 2015), EF16-35mm f/2.8L III USM (releases in October 2016), EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM (released in September 2012), EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM (released in September 2018), EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM (released in March 2010), EF24-105mm f/4L IS II USM (released in October 2016), EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM (released in December 2014). New Canon EOS Firmware: EOS R5, EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III

New Canon EOS Firmware: EOS R5, EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III

Canon supports filmmakers with the release of new firmware for its professional cameras

London, United Kingdom, 8ᵗʰ July 2021 – Canon Europe today announces firmware updates for the EOS R5¹, EOS R6 (firmware v1.4) and EOS-1D X Mark III (firmware v1.5). In response to feedback from users, these firmware updates make each camera a powerhouse for professional video capture.

Building on user feedback, Canon’s latest firmware update unlocks professional video capabilities for the EOS R5, EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III

Cinema quality video content

Already available in the EOS R5, the new firmware update brings the highly requested Canon Log 3 (C-Log 3) to the EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III. Canon’s renowned Log 3 expands the dynamic range and offers more colour space options to achieve rich, high-quality video that mirrors that of Hollywood standard cinema cameras. This logarithmic gamma curve also increases the compatibility of these models with cinema production workflows, making it easier to colour match footage captured with Canon’s Cinema EOS Series cameras.

Simplified video workflows

Alongside the availability of C-Log 3, these firmware upgrades add dual card recording to all three cameras. Users can now record the same video file - resolution, fps and codec - to both memory cards, ensuring that if one card is corrupted there is still a back-up of their footage2. The firmware update for the EOS-1D X Mark III and EOS R5 also adds support for the new industry standard CFexpress VPG400 cards, which guarantees a minimum write speed of 400 MB per second for more reliable filming. This is essential when shooting in 8K or recording RAW footage.

Compatible with cinema products

The upcoming firmware update to the EOS R5 introduces compatibility to Canon’s CN-E18-80mm T4.4 L IS KAS S and CN-E70-200mm T4.4 L IS KAS S Cine servo zoom lenses, making it a versatile camera to help users take content to the next level. With the new firmware, EOS R5 operators can control exposure, focus and zoom from the body, as well as start recording using the record button on Canon Cine servo zoom lenses. This compatibility also extends to Canon’s EOS utility and Camera Connect software, so users can seamlessly integrate the EOS R5 into any workflow.

Canon’s new EOS R5 firmware makes external full frame 8K ProRes RAW and 5K cropped ProRes RAW recording possible when connected to the Atomos Ninja V+ recorder and 5K cropped ProRes RAW recording with the Atomos Ninja V recorders, offering unrivalled image quality from an affordable and compact camera system.

When combined with the EOS R5, the Atomos Ninja V+ is able to record 8K recording at 30 fps, unlocking new possibilities for filmmakers and videographers. These professional recording formats also allow the white balance and ISO to be seamlessly changed during processing.

These latest firmware updates unlock critical video capabilities to catapult content creators to new levels of production value.

The EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III firmware update is now available to download from here:

The EOS R5 update will be available summer 2021.
