THE NAUTICAM NA-R6II UNDERWATER HOUSING FOR THE CANON EOS R6 MARK II CAMERA

The NA-R6II underwater housing follows suit with Nauticam's drive for innovation and it supports both the Canon EOS R6 and R6 Mark II. A conversion kit is required for the original R6 and will be provided upon request. Like its predecessors, the NA-R6II presents shooters with the ability to use both the available legacy EF lenses via an adapter in addition to their native RF optics. To support both the legacy and native lenses, Nauticam has integrated the NA-R6II into the N120 port system. Canon's EF to RF mount adapters can be affixed to the camera before insertion into the housing. When using the EOS R6 Mark II inside the housing with the adapter and a supported EF lens, the port and extension ring arrangement will be identical to the same setup on a Nauticam Canon N120 DSLR. With the ever growing RF lens lineup, you can also follow the dedicated N120 Canon RF port chart that is being updated and expanded with each new lens release. Please note that the Canon Control Ring and Drop-in Filter EF to EOS R adapters are not accessible within the housing.

Mission Control

Nauticam engineers are obsessed with getting the underwater image maker unfettered access to all the necessary controls, with as many within easy reach of the ergonomic rubberized handles. This Mission Control philosophy extends to the NA-R6II where a dual thumb lever and sub-lever are placed by the right handle. The dual thumb lever on the front right side activates the "M-Fn" and "Rec" buttons while the sub-lever on the right rear side corresponds to the "AF-ON" button. Near the left handle is a thumb lever for "Playback" for easy image review.

Large knurled and rubberized control dials access the camera's "main" and "sub" command dials. The two-stage trigger allows for smooth focus and firing activation. Additional buttons for "Menu", "Focus Point Selection" and others are also easily reached from the handles.

Flash Triggering

Flash triggering is achieved via one of two optional Flash Triggers, a manual LED trigger (PN 26305) or a TTL Flash Trigger (PN 26321 currently unavailable) that use the built-in fiber optic bulkheads with optional fiber-optic cables to trigger supported strobes. For controlling strobes that do not support fiber optic flash triggering, a variety of legacy hot-shoe flash control bulkheads are available.

INTEGRATED VACUUM CHECK AND LEAK DETECTION SYSTEM

The Nauticam vacuum check and leak detection electronics are shipped with the NA-R6II as standard equipment. Combined with an accessory M16 vacuum valve (25625) this monitoring system provides constant updates on the water tight and safe-to-dive status of the housing. A simple color coded LED lighting system lets the user know that the vacuum is solid, or that the housing is losing vacuum. Leak detection is built into the same circuit, so if there is water intrusion, an audible and visual indication will occur.

The Nauticam system is temperature compensated, eliminating false alarms caused by a change in outside temperature, or from a camera heating up on an action packed dive.

Reuters new proof of concept employs new Authentication Initiative

TOKYO, August 31, 2023—Thomson Reuters, a global content and technology company, Canon Inc., and Canon Europe Ltd., a world-leading provider of imaging and information technology solutions, and Starling Lab, an academic research lab based at Stanford and USC innovating with the latest cryptographic methods and decentralized web protocols, announced today the completion of a pilot program demonstrating how news organizations could certify the authenticity of an image and ease concerns about content's legitimacy.

In collaboration with Canon, global news organization Reuters proved its ability to embed trust into a photograph from its source by preserving a picture’s data provenance chain of integrity - the image’s metadata - from the point of capture to publication. Reuters also successfully integrated Starling Lab’s authentication framework into its picture desk workflow. One of the first practical news-gathering applications of the technology, this pilot comes at a time when consumers are increasingly worried about their ability to distinguish between real and fake news on the internet, and recent advancements in generative AI technologies which are making it easier for anyone to create visuals to deceive or misinform viewers.

“Trust in news is critical. However, recent technological advancements in image generation and manipulation are causing more people to question what is real, and what is not. Reuters continues to explore new technologies to guarantee that the content we deliver to the world be factual and trusted,” said Rickey Rogers, Global Editor, Reuters Pictures. “Our collaboration with Canon demonstrates the potential for new technology in image verification to increase consumers’ confidence that what they see is genuine. We look forward to sharing the encouraging findings from the project with our customers and applying them to protect our photojournalism. Our goal is to remain one of the most trusted global news sources.”

The pilot project saw Reuters photojournalist Violeta Santos Moura capture pictures using a prototype Canon camera that digitally assigns each photograph and its corresponding time, date and location with a unique identifier (hash value) and then cryptographically signs them to establish a root of trust for their authenticity. The photos are then registered into a public blockchain and updated after each modification by the Reuters pictures desk. This process continues until the photo is distributed with its metadata, edit history and blockchain registration embedded in the photograph using the new C2PA standard. To verify the picture’s authenticity, news customers can compare its unique identifier (hash value) on the public ledger.

“Many photojournalists rely on Canon technologies. We understand the role that images play in society and recognize the importance of preserving image authenticity”, said Richard Shepherd, Product Marketing and Marketing Strategy Senior Manager, Canon Europe Ltd. “Working as part of the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), Canon wants to take meaningful measures to protect image outputs that serve the news community worldwide.”

Canon Champions Independent Photojournalism at Visa pour l’Image 2023

Canon Champions Independent Photojournalism at Visa pour l’Image 2023

London, UK, 21 August 2023 – This September, Canon will be celebrating the work of photojournalists for the 34th consecutive year, as part of its long-standing partnership with Visa pour l’Image. During the festival’s Pro Week (September 4-9), held in Perpignan in the south of France, Canon will honour the craft of documentary storytelling, awarding two project grants and providing a cohort of 30 young emerging talent with access to the festival through the brand’s Student Development Programme. In addition, visitors will have the chance to learn more about Canon’s enhanced product support for professionals, which has evolved into a dedicated membership programme in recent months.

Canon to recognise outstanding contributions to photojournalism with two grants

For the 23rd year in a row, Canon and Visa pour l’Image will award an €8,000 grant to a female photojournalist pursuing a long-term documentary project. This year, the jury – consisting of journalists and editors from The New York Times, Le Monde, Conde Nast and others – have chosen to award British/ Swedish photojournalist Anastasia Taylor-Lind for her ongoing project ‘5K from the Frontline’ with the Canon Female Photojournalist Grant. Anastasia has been photographing frontline communities in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region since 2014. She continues to document the same families as they face the full-scale Russian invasion. Her images speak of the enduring will to live and the resistance of maintaining everyday routines despite war.

Alongside this, Canon together with Visa pour l’Image are pleased to be presenting Juan Vicente Manrique Gomez with the fourth Canon Video Grant for his short-film documentary project ‘Looking for a donkey’, which will be shot in Venezuela. With a bold satirical view, Juan will tell the story of two firefighters from a little town in the Venezuelan Andes, who were arrested and subsequently jailed after releasing a viral video in which they humorously caricatured Venezuela’s president Nicolas Maduro.

Paving the way for the next generation of photojournalists

Canon is committed to supporting and nurturing new talent, and for the 7th consecutive year will be providing emerging photographers from across Europe, Middle East and Africa with a unique opportunity to develop skills and advance in their careers as part of its acclaimed Student Development Programme. 30 talented photography students will attend a prestigious five-day workshop to network with and learn from prominent professionals during group as well as 1:1 portfolio review sessions, practical workshops and lectures.

This year’s speakers and reviewers include Canon Ambassadors Aïda Muluneh (Ethiopian photographer, educator and cultural entrepreneur), Brent Stirton (Getty Images Senior Correspondent and National Geographic explorer), Marco Longari (Chief Photographer in Africa for AFP) and Paolo Verzone (member of Agence VU’). A cohort of industry experts will also be present, including Fiona Shields (The Guardian), Gaia Tripoli (The New York Times), Lars Lindemann (GEO), Mads Nissen (Staff at Politiken, Member of Panos Pictures), Thomas Borberg (staff photographer at Politiken) as well as Tristan Lund (independent curator and art advisor).

Following the workshops, students will have the opportunity to participate in a selection of guided tours of the festival’s exhibition space, hosted by the artists themselves. This year, Canon Ambassador Paolo Pellegrin (Magnum Photos) will present a selection of works from the ‘Visa Years’, while Brent Stirton will introduce his Asian Elephants – Culture, Conflict and Co-existence project. 2022 Canon Female Photojournalist grant winner, Natalya Saprunova, will also showcase her grant winning work, The Evenki People, custodians of the resources of Yakutia.

Canon presence at Visa pour l’Image

At the festival’s headquarters in Perpignan’s Palais des Congrès, Canon will be hosting a dedicated product showcase area inviting visitors to experience the company’s latest cameras and lenses. Canon Americas Headquarters Retains Status As “Best Office Building” On Long Island

Canon earns honor from Long Island Business News for second consecutive year and third time overall

MELVILLE, N.Y., August 21, 2023 – It was a sweet repeat for Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, which saw its Canon Americas corporate headquarters voted the “Best Office Building” on Long Island by readers of the Long Island Business News in their annual Reader Ranking Survey. The announcement marked the second straight year Canon earned the honor and third overall after it also secured first-place honors in 2018.

The Canon Americas headquarters has garnered a top-3 finish every year for the past six years in the rankings.

“Winning this award for the second consecutive time and third overall is a great honor and we thank the readers of Long Island Business News for recognizing our Canon Americas headquarters,” said Seymour Liebman, executive vice president, chief administrative officer and general counsel, Canon U.S.A., Inc. "We strive to meet the needs of both our customers and our community and it is rewarding to know our efforts to contribute to sustainability efforts continue to make a positive impact.”

Located at One Canon Park in Melville, New York, Canon Americas opened the building more than 10 years ago – in February 2013 – and continues to serve as the headquarters for Canon’s business in North and South America.

Located just off the Long Island Expressway near the technology corridor of Route 110, Canon Americas headquarters offers many modern amenities on its 52-acre campus. The complex features an open, campus-like feel with green space, a walking trail and two retention ponds. Within the five-story, 700,000-square-foot complex, Canon employees enjoy a state-of-the-art showroom, learning center, cafeteria, fitness center and other amenities.

The building reflects Canon’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability, keeping in line with its philosophy of Kyosei, which translates to “all people, regardless of race, religion or culture, harmoniously living and working together into the future.” Canon Americas headquarters measures more than 500 feet long and nearly 300 feet wide, with 40.8 percent of the total building materials by value having been manufactured using recycled materials. One Canon Park was awarded LEED® Gold certification, a recognition for the design, construction, operations and maintenance of high-performance green buildings. The facility stands as a model for environmental stewardship and innovation, as the largest commercial property on Long Island to achieve this level of LEED.

Characteristics of the facility that contribute to its environmental efficiency include:
  • Natural lighting designed to provide daylight to 75 percent of regularly occupied spaces.
  • Options for alternative transportation, reserved parking for low emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles, and 22 electric vehicle charging stations.
  • Water efficient plumbing fixtures that are designed to reduce consumption by 35 percent based on typical usage.
  • Canon was able to reduce the amount of asphalt on the grounds by building two multi-level parking garages.
  • Additionally, nearly 60 percent of the natural sites of native and adapted plant species have been restored, creating ecosystems that require minimal irrigation.

Derwent Water, captured by Verity Milligan

London, UK, 19 August 2023 – Canon Europe is delighted to announce the return of its annual Redline Challenge photography competition, with entries opening today.

This year, the competition calls for aspiring photographers to capture a shot that displays an eye for minimalism with the theme ‘Room to Breathe’. Taking a ‘less is more’ approach, entrants are encouraged to tap into their creativity with a stripped-back vision on the subject matter of their choice.

The annual challenge invites amateur photographers from across EMEA1 to put their skills to the test. Whether it’s a landscape composition that leans into negative space, a creative exploration of shapes and lines, or a personal moment of solitude – participants can showcase their talent in any genre. All entrants have a chance of winning a Canon EOS R5 bundle, with the highly versatile RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM lens.

Photographic submissions for the Canon Redline Challenge can be taken on any device. Images will be judged based on composition, creativity, technical mastery and how closely it reflects the theme. The final winner will be announced in October.

The 2022 Redline Challenge received over 14,000 entries, with the theme ‘A Split-Second Story’. Last year’s winner Jiří Durdík, a self-taught photographer from the Czech Republic, won with an exhilarating motion blur shot of a dirt bike race.

Entries are open from 00:01 GMT on 19th August 2023 and will close at 23:59 GMT on 16th September 2023.

There will be a variety of virtual backgrounds as well as an example of photogrammetry.
