Using the Canon RC-6 Wireless Remote Control for long exposure photography

Canon RC-6 Wireless Remote Control
Size 32 x 63.5 x 6.5mm
The Canon RC-6 Wireless Remote Control is an inexpensive wireless transmitter for Canon EOS DSLR cameras and a really handy accessory for pairing with my Canon EOS bodies. This tiny remote release assists me mostly with long exposure landscape / seascape photography (on tripod) when using Av / Bulb mode for shutter releases of up to 30 to 40 seconds. Its also effective in some of my close-up / macro photography, eliminating possible manual shutter release movement (with camera on tripod). Effective remote range is +- 5 meters.

Reasons for using the Canon RC-6 Remote Control

  • Eliminates movement when pressing the shutter button (i.e. Bulb mode / long exposures)
  • Landscape photography
  • Self-portraits / photographer in group photos
  • Recording movies: start and stop video recordings

Using the RC-6 Remote Control
A compatible EOS camera must be in the Self-timer / Remote Control mode for the RC-6 to operate. The remote control will trigger the shutter from the infrared receiver / remote control sensor in front of the camera (i.e. self-portraits) or just hold it slightly above the shutter release pointing slightly downwards towards the remote control sensor (on the right front of all EOS cameras when in shooting position). Press once to open the shutter and the camera's LCD will start recording the seconds. Press again to close the shutter and wait for the camera to complete the image processing.  A switch on the back of the remote will also allow a 2-second delay before firing.

Using the RC-6 Remote Control in Bulb Mode
Bulb mode provides for shutter releases to exceed the 30 seconds limitation on most DSLR cameras. Once the Canon DSLR is set in bulb mode and the Remote Control is active it will be possible to open and close the shutter for various times for long exposure photography i.e. +- 4 seconds (fireworks photography), 20 - 60 seconds (night photography) or longer (star trail photography) - longer than the built-in 30 seconds limitation of the EOS DSLR.

Canon EOS R3 New 'Subject To Detect' Confirmed

Canon EOS R3 New 'Subject To Detect' Confirmed
AF tracking for racing cars and motorbikes – more details of Canon’s EOS R3 revealed – a high-speed, high-performance mirrorless

Canon UK, 2 June 2021

Following Canon Inc’s initial development announcement of the EOS R3 – its latest high-performance, high-speed professional mirrorless camera – more details have been revealed today confirming it marks a new era for sports, wildlife and news photographers.

Canon is committed to achieving the impossible, and this camera is no exception. Today, new specs prove the EOS R3 takes object-tracking to another level – adding Auto Focus (AF) tracking for motorsports including racing cars and motorbikes. In addition to this, ideal for filmmakers, the EOS R3 can record oversampled 4K video.

The EOS R3 combines the next-level performance and image quality advantages of Canon’s innovative EOS R System line-up. Pairing its RF Mount with Canon’s RF lenses, the EOS R3 offers possibilities unseen in any other camera/lens duo and opens the door to previously unattainable capabilities and unseen optical excellence. As a result, professional photographers – whether shooting sports, wildlife, or news – can capture fleeting moments in time, in ways they never thought possible.

Following the April development announcement, here’s some of the freshly revealed EOS R3 specs to be aware of:

Capture fast-moving subjects in pin-sharp focus, with ease

Professionals following moving objects around the frame will enjoy the EOS R3’s ability to keep them in pin-sharp focus – even when shooting RAW at 30fps – thanks to Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology. Alongside the people and animal (including birds) AF tracking technology found in the EOS R5 and EOS R6, the EOS R3 is perfect for motorsports photographers – with its ability to track racing cars and motorbikes. And when light conditions get tough, the camera can focus in extreme darkness at light levels -7EV or lower[i].

Supporting Canon’s unique Eye Control AF technology, which enables professionals to select the AF point with only their eye, the EOS R3 is an extension of any photographers’ creativity – reacting quickly in the moment to capture the shot. In low light, the EOS R3 offers up to 8-stops of protection against camera shake[ii] with Canon’s revolutionary combined Image Stabilizer (IS) technology. The camera’s sensor-shift IS works in tandem with the optical IS built into many RF Mount lenses, for a result that lets professionals shoot handheld in very dim light or while using long shutter speeds to intentionally blur movement.

High-quality RAW at 30fps

At the heart of the EOS R3 lies a brand-new back illuminated stacked CMOS sensor, working together with Canon’s high-performance DIGIC X image processor. Today, Canon can confirm it will capture quality RAW files at a staggering 30fps with full AF/AE tracking. The breath-taking speed of the camera’s new sensor also redefines what can be done with an electronic shutter. Flash sync is now possible with the electronic shutter when used with external Speedlites, and rolling shutter distortion when shooting fast-moving subjects has been reduced.

Oversampled 4K and RAW recording abilities

In addition to its next-level still photography capabilities, the EOS R3 is suited to those looking to capture high-quality video. The camera will record oversampled 4K, or users can record RAW footage internally. Canon Log 3 is also available to provide professionals with greater dynamic range and colour grading possibilities. Crucially, the same object recognition available to stills photographers is also available to videographers, so filmmakers can track fast-moving objects around the frame, keeping them in sharp focus.

• Built for professionals

Built to withstand the rigours of day-to-day professional use, the EOS R3 will have a tough, magnesium-alloy body featuring dust and water resistance to the same level as Canon’s legendary EOS-1D X series – ensuring it can cope in the toughest weather conditions. Dual card slots allow image files to be written to SD or CFexpress memory cards. The camera is powered by a high-capacity LP-E19 battery – the same as the one found in Canon’s EOS-1D X Mark III cameras – enabling professionals to use and share batteries between cameras that they may already have in their kitbag. The camera will also offer a choice of controls with both multi controller and smart controller – for completely intuitive operation. Offering three customisable dials on the body, plus a Lens Control ring on each RF Mount lens, this allows shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation all to be easily adjusted while the camera is at the photographer’s eye. The EOS R3 is also equipped with a Vari-Angle screen letting professionals compose easily from creative perspectives.

Advanced connectivity

As a camera intended for leading sports and news shooters – connectivity is vital. Offering a built in Wired LAN socket and 5GHz Wi-Fi[iii] allowing communication with computer networks, laptops and mobile devices, professionals can share images quickly and easily. As previously announced, the EOS R3 is also compatible with the Canon Mobile File Transfer app. What’s more, the EOS R3 will feature a new accessory shoe which provides data communication and power for new accessories when attached to the camera.

[i] For still photos only with an f1.2 lens, except RF lenses with a Defocus Smoothing (DS) coating, using center AF point and One-Shot AF used at room temperature and ISO 100

Canon Celebrates 50th Anniversary of the Aspherical Lens Element

Canon FD55mm F1.2AL Lens : First Canon interchangeable lens for SLR cameras
Canon Celebrates 50th Anniversary of the Company’s First Interchangeable Lens for SLR Cameras to Feature an Aspherical Lens Element

MELVILLE, NY, May 28, 2021– Canon Inc. announced today that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the release of the FD55mm F1.2AL, the company’s first interchangeable lens for SLR cameras that featured an aspherical lens element. Today, aspherical lens elements are not only used in the company’s lenses for ILC cameras, but also broadcast lenses, semiconductor lithography systems, telescope mirrors and a wide variety of optical products.

Aspherical lenses possess a curvature that is ideal for gathering light at a single point. From the F2.8 L IS USM zoom lens series for professional and enthusiast users — the RF15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM (released in September 2019), RF24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM (released in September 2019) and RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM (released in November 2019) — to the RF28-70mm F2 L USM (released in December 2018) which features a fast f/2 aperture across the entire zoom range, Canon’s aspherical lenses help reduce various types of aberration and provide high image quality.

The inherent characteristics of spherical lenses result in the lens being unable to focus parallel rays of light in their complete form at a single common point. Due to the lens’ spherical-shaped surface, blurring of images — known as spherical aberration — and other optical aberrations tend to occur in the captured image. Before the advent of aspherical lens, in order to correct spherical aberration, multiple spherical lenses had to be placed in a specific configuration. However, thanks to their unique properties, the same results can be achieved using only a single aspherical lens. In 1963, Canon embarked upon a program of sophisticated lens research and development in order to develop this “dream lens” that could focus all incident light on a single point and create a consistent, clear image.

In order to mass-produce aspherical lenses, Canon needed processing technology that was precise to within less than 0.1 micrometers1, as well as high-precision measuring devices that could measure to within 0.01 micrometers. Through repeated cycles of design and processing methods, the company finally succeeded in creating the technology needed to mass-produce aspherical lenses. In March 1971, Canon’s first interchangeable-lens SLR camera employing an aspherical lens was released—the FD55mm F1.2AL. Then, in 1973, Canon further enhanced the precision of its lens processing technology with the development of the ALG-Z nanometer2 level ultra-high-precision aspherical lens grinder. The next leap forward happened in 1985, when the company successfully implemented the large-diameter glass mold (GMo) aspherical lens element into the new FD35-105mm F3.5-4.5 (released in December 1985), the world’s first interchangeable lens for SLR cameras to include a GMo aspherical lens. Since then, the technologies used to form and measure aspherical lenses have played a vital part in Canon’s efforts to realize high-performance lenses.

Canon’s technological portfolio includes four distinct aspherical lens processing technologies: Aspherical lens grinding and polishing, which employs diamond-tipped tools to grind and polish the lens glass; aspherical glass molding, in which the lens glass is pressed and formed using an aspherical mold; aspherical replica technology that uses an aspherical mold to form aspherical resin on the surface of spherical glass; and aspherical plastic molding, which injects and shapes resin inside an aspherical mold. Based on the properties of the aspherical lens element and its position in the lens’ optical configuration, Canon will utilize the appropriate technology in order to produce lenses that are able to serve the wide-ranging needs of our customers.

Canon develops its lens processing machinery independently in order to achieve the manufacturing of aspherical lenses with a high degree of precision. To illustrate just how accurate Canon’s technology is, only 0.1 micrometers’ discrepancy is allowed between the dimensions of a lens’ design schematic and the finished product. For a lens expanded to the size of the roof of the Tokyo Dome (diameter: approx. 244 m), this would mean a margin of error smaller than 0.5 mm, or the thickness of conventional mechanical pencil lead.

In addition, aspherical lens grinding and polishing technology — the most precise of the four technologies—is used not only in the production of SLR camera lenses, but also in the sciences. For example, the main camera optical correction system of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s Subaru Telescope features aspherical lenses made by Canon, using the company’s high-precision measurement and processing technologies.

The Effects of Aspherical Lenses
An interchangeable lens comprising of only spherical lens elements, such as large-diameter or wide-angle lenses, results in the presence of spherical aberrations and distortions greatly increasing. Spherical aberration occurs when incident light parallel to the lens’ optical axis, the position of the formed image when light rays are nearer to the lens’ optical axis and images formed when light rays are further from the lens’ optical axis are misaligned, resulting in a blurred image. In addition, distortions occur when the subject and the image formed by the lens fail to form identical images, causing straight lines to become distorted in the resulting image.

Aspherical lenses are the solution to such problems caused by spherical lenses and help produce ideal images. Their curved surfaces, shaped differently than spherical lenses, help reduce a variety of aberrations. For example, in nighttime cityscapes where there might be multiple light sources, aspherical lenses can lessen the effect of “bleeding” effect of the light sources due to spherical aberration.

Into the future, Canon will continue to optimize its optical technologies in order to create products and technologies that help meet our customers’ wide-ranging needs.
