Canon launches PRISMAcolor Manager

Canon launches PRISMAcolor Manager for simpler colour measurement and validation across all CMYK digital production printers

PRISMAcolor Manager is a cloud-based colour management software that enables PSPs to measure and validate colour across Canon and non-Canon CMYK printers over multiple locations.

Canon Europe today launches PRISMAcolor Manager, a cloud-based, colour management software that enables commercial and in-house print service providers (PSPs) to measure and validate colour across Canon and non-Canon CMYK inkjet and toner printers1 over multiple locations. Using a simple, step-by-step process that carries out rigorous checks on quality and consistency, PRISMAcolor Manager verifies colour accuracy against recognised industry standards, such as those specified by FOGRA2 and IDEAlliance3, or user-defined targets and tolerances, allowing operators to compare and precisely replicate printed colours.

PRISMAcolor Manager is a cloud-based colour management software that enables PSPs to measure and validate colour across Canon and non-Canon CMYK printers over multiple locations.

Using a simple, step-by-step process, PRISMAcolor Manager verifies colour accuracy against recognised industry standards or user-defined targets and tolerances.

PRISMAcolor Manager offers PSPs an easy way to confirm and visualise the colour quality of digital prints against a chosen target by clearly structuring the digital colour measurement process, simplifying how results are displayed and analysed, and collecting colour measurement results from different printers. PRISMAcolor Manager validates and grades the results of the analysis against defined standards.

Canon launches PRISMAcolor Manager

Through its intuitive interface, the software can be used by any operator, saving time and resources. PRISMAcolor Manager shows the operator simple, step-by-step animations of how to carry out colour measurements, from initialisation to generating reports. Reducing wasteful misprints, PRISMAcolor Manager helps minimise errors either by automatically submitting the measurement charts with the correct settings to a PRISMAsync- or Fiery controller-driven device or by displaying the correct colour quality settings on screen as instructions for the operator. During the measurement, illustrations provide real-time feedback and checkmarks after correctly carrying out each step.

Using PRISMAcolor Manager, operators can validate colour quality in four ways:

1. From a PRISMAsync4 print server, a test chart is printed with the correct settings and measured via the digital press’ internal colour sensors. Validations are then uploaded to PRISMAcolor Manager. This whole process occurs automatically.
2.From PRISMAcolor Manager, an ID-coded5 test chart is automatically printed with the correct colour settings to a PRISMAsync- or Fiery controller-driven CYMK engine, and easily measured via a compatible X-Rite i1 Pro or iSis measurement device, linking the validation results to the test via the test ID.
3. An ID-coded test chart is downloaded from PRISMAcolor Manager and manually printed on any SNMP-enabled CMYK printer using the colour quality settings displayed in PRISMAcolor Manager. The chart is then easily measured via PRISMAcolor Manager using a compatible X-Rite i1 Pro or iSis measurement device and the validation results are linked to the test via the test ID.
4. A standard test chart for colour validation is measured via PRISMAcolor Manager for validation using a compatible X-Rite i1 Pro or iSis measurement device.

Jennifer Kolloczek, European Planning, Marketing & Innovation Senior Director, Production Print at Canon Europe comments, “Validating and optimising colour consistency is essential for print service providers and is one of the most critical aspects of professional printing. Monitoring colour quality and ensuring that it is in line with industry standards can be very time consuming and complex and often requires a colour expert. For PSPs with more than one type of printer or printer supplier, the process of measuring and analysing colour consistency and quality across different devices can be even more challenging. PRISMAcolor Manager provides PSPs with a simple, printer-agnostic tool to support these processes. And its easy-to-use user interface enables operators at all levels to carry out the validation.”

PRISMAcolor Manager will be available in May 2023 via PRISMA Home the home for all PRISMA Cloud tools and applications. For more information about PRISMAcolor, visit: [LINK]

  • The CMYK printer must be SNMP-enabled (Simple Network Management Protocol) and capable of handling the required colour settings of a specified test.
  • FOGRA is a not-for-profit scientific research institute for the printing and media industries. It conducts audits that provide an independent quality benchmark, enabling both vendors and print businesses to objectively assess the capabilities of their presses and production processes.
  • IDEAlliance is the leading developer of specifications and certifications in the graphic communications industry, and a global association of brands, printers, and technology companies.

“I love this lens! It’s incredibly lightweight, versatile, and sharp. Toss on the 2x extender and you can snipe gorgeous frames at a distance, especially with the built in image stabilizer. This lens is going to change the game for live concerts, weddings, and so much more.”

Ben Hagarty, Grammy award-winning cinematographer

This telephoto zoom lens is ideal for professionals who use a Canon EOS R3, EOS R5 or EOS R6 Mark II full-frame mirrorless camera, but can also be a catalyst for users who have developed into serious, aspirational enthusiasts and are looking to step beyond their traditional telephoto lens experience. Best use cases include, but are not limited to, indoor sports, motorsports, outdoor fashion, video and cinema, photojournalism and theater work. For high-level shooters and videographers particularly working in low-light settings and seeking a hand-holdable solution, this lens provides the total answer.

EOS R8 –The lightest Full Frame EOS R mirrorless camera with Advanced DAF and uncropped 4k 50p movie

Made for: First time full frame buyer and content creators

Best for: Travel, Snapshots, Lifestyle photography and Video creation

Lightweight, High Speed and High Image Quality

The ultra-compact EOS R8 weights only 414g1 (body only, 461g including battery and memory card) but packs a powerful punch with high performance photo and video features. EOS R8 is designed with a high-speed 24.2MP Canon full-frame CMOS Sensor combined with high-speed DIGIC X digital image processor, making it capable of providing up to approximately 40FPS2 high-speed continuous shooting with electronic shutter3 (or up to 6FPS[5]with mechanical shutter) with Auto Focus/ Auto Exposure Tracking, the camera can capture the split-second details between a subject’s movements. The EOS R8’s electronic shutter offers a maximum 1/16000 second[6] shutter speed, effectively freezing images of fast-moving objects while in motion, and support shooting Long Exposure (Bulb).

EOS R8 also features RAW burst mode[7] (supports Auto Focus/ Auto Exposure Tracking) using the electronic shutter to record a sequence of RAW images. It can record RAW images at up to 30 fps with the full 24.2-megapixel sensor resolution on the EOS R8. When “Pre-shooting” function is enabled, it can also capture images 0.5 seconds before the shutter button is even pressed. This is convenient for wildlife photography that targets sudden movements of subjects — such as the moment when a bird takes flight, for example. Benefited from the DIGIC X digital image processor, EOS R8 also realizes a wide standard ISO range of 100-102400, expandable to ISO 204800, to help deliver low-noise, high-quality images even in low-light situations.
EOS R8 features High Frequency Anti-Flicker Shooting (50.0Hz to 8192.0Hz), inherited from EOS R3, to accommodate shooting with LED lighting[8].

EOS R8, like many EOS products, supports HDR PQ photo and video shooting. The HEIF images shot by the EOS R8 can be converted to JPEG in batches in the camera, and it is also compatible with Digital Photo Professional (Windows version only), making adjustments after shooting easier. The latest [Moving Subject] HDR mode has been added to EOS R8. For subject such as People, animals, and vehicles, etc., which will have different positions due to movement between the three HDR shots, can now be expressed in a single shot with high dynamic range.

As monitors and TVs that support HDR 10 become more popular, EOS R8 is the best choice to try to explore the world of HDR and enjoy shooting images in different ways.

The digital tele-converter of the EOS R8 can take digitally processed 2.0x or 4.0x photos, allowing users to obtain telephoto effects without changing the lens[9]. By customizing the digital teleconverter function to the cross keys, it is also possible to switch to the digital teleconverter instantly while using the electronic viewfinder.

EOS R8 also incorporates new imaging functions to expand creative expression. The first one is the Panorama Shot (SCN mode), which captures breath-taking high resolution panorama shot images in-camera. Continuous shooting is performed while panning and a panoramic image is automatically generated. The second new feature added is in-camera “Depth Composition” function which automatically merges focus bracketed images taken with focus bracketing into an image that is clearly in focus from front to back, allowing users to check the composition results on site. Moreover, EOS R8 supports Canon’s “Cloud RAW Development”[10] service, which uses image processing algorithm developed through “deep learning" technology to process RAW images into JPEG/HEIF images with enhanced image quality.

Advanced subject recognition and tracking auto focus inherited from the renowned EOS R3

With Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, EOS R8 offers extensive autofocus coverage at up to 100% [11]of the entire image area and 1053 AF zones[12], making precise focusing and tracking of subjects possible even when they move to the edge of the frame and allows for greater compositional freedom. Featuring a minimum AF brightness down to EV -6.5[13], EOS R8 is able to perform stable Servo AF even under low-light conditions.

EOS R8 features EOS iTR[14] AF X inherited from EOS R3, its AF algorithm developed using Deep Learning technology provides high performance Subject Recognition and AF tracking of people, animals[15] and vehicles[16]. For more ease of use, Auto mode is now available for subject detection, in which the camera automatically selects the type of subject (people, animals or vehicles) without the need to switch the Subject Detection setting in the menu.

EOS R8’s Vehicle Detection is now enhanced to cover train (high speed trains, conventional trains and steam locomotives) and airplane (jet planes and helicopters) in addition to motorsports (automobiles and motorcycles). With Spot detection setting, the driver cab of high speed train or cockpit of airplane can be detected. Meanwhile, Animal detection newly supports detection of horses (racing horses, zebra and ponies etc) even with rider. Eye Detection AF is also enhanced to include options for right-eye priority or left-eye priority. Moreover, the AF tracking performance of EOS R8 has been improved even subject change posture or brightness change by applying deep learning technology to extract subject features during subject tracking, which applies to animals, vehicles and any other subject selected by users.

EOS R8 also adopted EOS R3’s advanced tracking system that allows simply “grabbing” the parts of a subject to be tracked using the 1-point AF or zone AF for the camera to determine the optimum tracking position and perform subject detection and tracking. “Whole Area Tracking Servo AF” Subject tracking is now possible from any one of the 8 AF Area modes, including 1-point AF or Flexible Zone AF.

During AF or continuous shooting “Whole Area Tracking Servo AF” can be turned on or off to meet the needs of shooting. Flexible Zone AF which allows customization of AF Area has also been added to bring even greater freedom in photography. When shooting with electronic viewfinder, the "Touch and Drag AF" allows user to adjust the focus position by touching the LCD screen and dragging the position, and confirming the focus position in the electronic viewfinder screen in real time, making the focus control more intuitive and simpler. Users can also use "Tap to select the subject to detect" function to switch the detected subject instantly by tapping the screen.

New EOS Movie features to optimize workflow for content creators

EOS R8 is equipped with professional EOS Movie capability which is perfect for new generation content creators. It supports a variety of 4K recording formats including high-quality non-cropped 4K UHD 50p/60p (6K oversampling) IPB movies, and cropped 4K UHD 50p/60p IPB movies. In addition, the new camera can record FHD 150p/180p high-frame movies without cropping to make 6x slow-motion movies, so as to record smooth and dramatic slow-motion movies.

Taking advantage of the increased CMOS sensor readout speed, the rolling shutter distortion of 4K 25p/30p movie has been reduced by approximately 50%[17].

EOS R8 is equipped with Movie Digital IS, which provides 5-axis digital image stabilization to reduce the camera shaking during handheld shooting. And when RF/RF-S lens equipped with optical image stabilizer is installed, the camera shake can be further reduced through the coordinated control of the Movie Digital IS and the lens optical image stabilizer, further improving stability when shooting movies while walking. In addition, Tilt Correction is added to the Movie Digital IS, which can further compensate for the vibration around the screen and can greatly reduce the distortion (shake blur/wobble) at the edge of the screen when using a wide-angle lens to shoot while walking, especially when taking selfies.

EOS R8 has added a new Focus Breathing Correction[18] feature, which can correct the focus breathing phenomenon according to the optical design value of the compatible lens and correct the change of the angle of view caused by the change of the focus distance, so that the user can suppress the focus breathing for high-quality movie recording.

EOS R8 also supports 10-bit Canon Log 3 and 10-bit HDR PQ (Rec. ITU-R BT.2100(PQ)) H.265 Movie for use in high-contrast scenes and fast-paced situations. 10-bit Canon Log 3 offers a wider dynamic range and precise highlights for high-contrast scenes and HDR movies. It is also compatible with Cinema Gamut which offers a wide colour space for perfect integration with the professional Cinema EOS System. Meanwhile, HDR PQ movies with higher brightness, wider tonal range and wider colour gamut can deliver realistic images with only minimal colour grading is necessary. With simplified post-production workflow, it is useful for time demanding environment and can be viewed conveniently on HDR-compatible screens. Uncompressed 4K YCbCr 4:2:2 10-bit 60P HDR (Rec. ITU-R BT.2100(PQ)) HDMI output is also supported[19], ensuring seamless integration with filmmaking industry equipment and workflows.

EOS R8 also features new functions inherited from the Cinema EOS system to improve shooting efficiency. With the pre-recording function originated from Cinema EOS, the EOS R8 can record the scene 5 seconds or 3 seconds before the user presses the video shooting button. This function enables new shooting methods, such as recording a scene that appears suddenly or waiting for a scene change without continuous recording. This reduces the recording of unnecessary clip data, thereby saving data storage space and reducing editing workload, among other advantages. Users can also use Camera Connect to operate pre-recording, which can greatly reduce the workload of finding suitable scenes during editing.

EOS R8 is also equipped with the false color function that is widely used in the Cinema EOS System. Since exposure can be intuitively adjusted, shooting efficiency is improved. If using EOS R8 as a sub-camera for the Cinema EOS camcorder, the same function can be used to adjust the exposure, making it easy to use both cameras. Zebra display function is also available. Button customization enables quick recall of both functions, allowing the user to check exposure conditions whenever needed.

Moreover, aspect markers (such as: 2.35:1, 1:1, 9:16) are added to match the aspect ratio of the screen of the movie-posting destination when shooting on the premise of uploading the data to a certain social media site to display the aspect ratio mark on the screen when shooting. This makes it easy to determine the intended composition while shooting and reduces the burden of editing after shooting. In response to users' needs for shooting, EOS R8 has also added a record emphasis function, which displays a flashing red frame on the screen during video recording, so that it can be seen at a glance that the video is being recorded.

In order to facilitate live streaming for creators, EOS R8 is also compatible with UVC/UAC specifications, no additional adapter is required, and it is more convenient to output high-quality FHD 30p video via USB for live streaming or online conferences[20]. When connected via UVC/UAC, " AF for close up demos " is available. When the user picks up an object to make a review or display in front of the camera, the auto focus will focus on the displayed object. It is convenient for users to introduce products in live streaming.

EOS R8’s Movie autofocus control and seamless workflows can also meet professional-level requirements. The Movie Servo AF of the EOS R8 can be applied to all movie formats; Movie Servo AF can accurately track people, animals and vehicle subjects during shooting, maintaining high-quality clear focus at all times. The Movie Servo AF of the EOS R8 has also included the "Detection only" option. When the camera detects a subject within the screen, focusing and tracking are automatically performed. If no subject can be detected, the camera waits for the emergence of a subject to start focusing. This function eliminates the burden of turning AF on and off even if the subject goes off screen or becomes invisible on screen.

EOS R8 supports continuous recording of non-cropped 4K UHD 50p/60p movie for 30 mins or longer while the maximum continuous movie recording time has been extended to 2 hours. Moreover, the built-in internal Stereo Microphone is newly equipped with “Audio Noise Reduction”[21] feature that reduce focus noise and white noise to provide a better sound recording quality. The noise reduction effect can be monitored via headphone terminal output. The camera also supports digital sound recording via the Multi-Function Shoe for high-quality sound.

Uncompromised Operability and Connectivity

EOS R8 features a high precision 0.39-inch 2.36M-dot 0.7x OLED electronic viewfinder with up to 120FPS display frame rate. With the “OVF simulation view assist” function originated from EOS R3, EOS R8 is able to reproduce the view of an SLR optical viewfinder by displaying more natural highlights and dark gradations with high brightness level of EVF and Canon HDR technology. It also features a 3-inch 1.62M-dot side-opening Vari-angle Clear View II LCD Touch Monitor offers greater flexibility and convenience for more challenging low or high angles.

Inheriting the excellent control design of EOS R6 Mark II, the power switch of EOS R8 is also moved to the right side of the camera, which is convenient for quick operation after picking up the camera. Even if the camera is powered off, the user can immediately perform power operation after picking up the camera. Camera start-up time is as fast as 0.4 seconds[22]. A new photo/video mode switch has been added to the top left of the body, which is convenient for users to quickly switch between photo and video modes. In addition, in order to match the shooting of different scenes, users can use the wireless remote control BR-E1 for high-speed continuous shooting.

When it comes to camera body design, EOS R8 features a rigid and lightweight magnesium alloy chassis with high level of dust and water resistance[23] design. For assurance in high-speed burst shooting performance, the camera is equipped with a high-precision shutter unit with 100,000 cycle durability[24]. The camera comes with SD/SDHC/SDXC card (UHS-II) card slot, also supports battery charging and powering via USB-PD, making it hassle-free even when shooting outdoor as the camera can be recharged easily with portable charger via the USB port.

EOS R8 is also adopted the next-generation Multi-Function Shoe to significantly enhance communication capabilities and power supply[25] functionality to further support various types of accessories.

With EOS R8, users can expect greater convenience and higher efficiency when transferring images and movies. The camera’s built-in high-speed 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz) Wi-Fi allows for fast wireless network transfer to Camera Connect App or computer. WPA3-Personal is newly supported for added file security on wireless networks. Built-in Bluetooth® low energy technology is available for easy smartphone connection. A built-in USB-C (USB 3.2 Gen 2) digital terminal can be found on the camera body for 10Gbps high-speed transmission. Additionally, new wired connection to Camera Connect App with full function is support for iPhone[26] and AndroidTM smartphone.

Canon is Developing a World 1st Ultra-High-Sensitivity ILC with SPAD sensor

Canon developing world-first ultra-high-sensitivity ILC equipped with SPAD sensor, supporting precise monitoring through clear color image capture of subjects several km away, even in darkness

Canon MS-500 - Ultra-high-sensitivity interchangeable-lens camera (ILC)
Canon MS-500 - Ultra-high-sensitivity interchangeable-lens camera (ILC)

TOKYO, April 3, 2023—Canon Inc. announced today that the company is developing the MS-500, the world's first1 ultra-high-sensitivity interchangeable-lens camera (ILC) equipped with a 1.0 inch Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) sensor2 featuring the world's highest pixel count of 3.2 megapixels3. The camera leverages the special characteristics of SPAD sensors to achieve superb low-light performance while also utilizing broadcast lenses that feature high performance at telephoto-range focal lengths. Thanks to such advantages, the MS-500 is expected to be ideal for such applications as high-precision monitoring.

There is a growing need for high-precision monitoring systems for use in such environments as national borders, seaports, airports, train stations, power plants and other key infrastructure facilities, in order to quickly identify targets even under adverse conditions including darkness in which human eyes cannot see, and from long distances.

The currently in-development MS-500 is equipped with a 1.0 inch SPAD sensor that reduces noise, thus making possible clear, full-color HD imaging even in extreme low-light environments. When paired with Canon's extensive range of broadcast lenses, which excel at super-telephoto image capture, the camera is capable of accurately capturing subjects with precision in extreme low-light environments, even from great distances. For example, the camera may be used for nighttime monitoring of seaports, thanks to its ability to spot vessels that are several km away, thus enabling identification and high-precision monitoring of vessels in or around the seaport.

With CMOS sensors, which are commonly used in conventional modern digital cameras, each pixel measures the amount of light that reaches the pixel within a given time. However, the readout of the accumulated electronic charge contains electronic noise, which diminishes image quality, due to the process by which accumulated light is measured. This leads to degradation of the resulting image, particularly when used in low-light environments. SPAD sensors, meanwhile, employ a technology known as "photon counting", in which light particles (photons) that enter each individual pixel are counted. When even a single photon enters a pixel, it is instantly amplified approximately 1 million times and output as an electrical signal. Every single one of these photons can be digitally counted, thus making possible zero-noise during signal readout—a key advantage of SPAD sensors4. Because of this technological advantage, the MS-500 is able to operate even under nighttime environments with no ambient starlight5, and is also capable of accurately detecting subjects with minimal illumination and capture clear color images.

The MS-500 employs the bayonet lens mount (based on BTA S-1005B standards) which is widely used in the broadcast lens industry. This enables the camera to be used with Canon's extensive range of broadcast lenses which feature superb optical performance. As a result, the camera is able to recognize and capture subjects that are several km away.

Going forward, Canon will continue to pursue R&D and create products capable of surpassing the limits of the human eye while contributing to the safety and security of society by leveraging its long history of comprehensive imaging technologies that include optics, sensors, image processing and image analysis.

Canon plans to commence sales of the MS-500 in 2023.

Reference

The MS-500 will be displayed as a reference exhibit at the Canon booth during the 2023 NAB Show for broadcast and filmmaking equipment, to be held in Las Vegas from Saturday, April 15 to Wednesday, April 19.

Canon expands Auto Tracking / Loop availability for PTZ Cameras

Canon expands Auto Tracking and Auto Loop availability for PTZ cameras

Canon expands Auto Tracking and Auto Loop availability for PTZ cameras

London, United Kingdom 3rd April 2023 – Today, Canon Europe expands the functionality of its PTZ cameras with two new apps available via its Add-On Applications System, enabling users to add new functionalities for video production, alongside a firmware update to enhance user experience. First announced in January, and showcased at ISE 2023 with the CR-N700, the two apps – Canon’s Auto Tracking Application RA-AT001 and the Auto Loop Application RA-AL001 – can be used with the CR-N500, CR-N300 and CR-X300 from August1. Both apps build on market demand to create a powerful standalone solution for video production without the need for external hardware. These new paid applications are easy to configure, and coupled with Canon’s 4K camera technology, make the ideal solution for a broad range of scenarios, from higher education, corporate, live events, broadcast and houses of worship.

Powered by Canon’s advanced drive mechanism in its PTZ cameras, this new Auto Tracking application automatically tracks people with precision, to ensure they are always framed and in-shot, without the intervention of a camera operator. Enabling both single and multi-camera shoots to be filmed without the need of a camera operator, the tracking reduces the burden on AV staff or operators, whilst still capturing high-quality, professional content. Performing visual analysis in-camera, the function is available without any external device, resulting in a quicker – and more accurate – tracking capability. From full body, upper body, shoulders-up and other viewpoints, as well as speeds ranging from slow to brisk walking. The camera’s precision and the smooth drive work in synergy with the pan/tilt mechanism for high quality footage straight from the camera.

With the new firmware, the Auto Tracking application becomes compatible with a wider range of PTZ models – the CR-N500 and CR-N300 – so they can be optimised for a multitude of different use cases, such as live production, corporate events, or lectures. With the Composition feature, operators can set the optimal position to ensure the subject is always well framed, while the tracking sensitivity offers up to ten levels of adjustments, meaning it can be used for a variety of use cases.

Auto Loop Application: Expanded compatibility

The Auto Loop application is being made available for the CR-N500, CR-N300 and CR-X300, enabling the cameras to follow a pre-programmed, automated pan/tilt/zoom movement without the need for an operator to manually change the shot. This is perfect for situations where operators must make simple repeated camera movements, such as live music events for instance where the shot would move from the drummer, to lead singer, to audience and then back again. Directors and operators can concentrate on switching and framing with other cameras, reducing workload.

Two movement pattern options, loop or back-and-forth, give greater flexibility to choose movements that suit each shooting environment. To ensure footage looks natural amongst a multi-camera set up, the application offers smooth adjustment of start-stop acceleration/deceleration to simulate manual camera movements. These features are easily programmable via a single screen, where operators can apply position and route settings and even access a preview, as well as control the speed of movement and duration of pause at each position.

The Auto Tracking and Auto Loop applications are currently available for the CR-N700 and will be available for other PTZ models with the firmware update later in 2023.

Enhanced user experience

Committed to expanding the functionality of its PTZ cameras, Canon’s latest firmware update enhances user experience and workflow – whether the camera is being used independently, or part of a multi-camera set-up. When used in conjunction with Cinema EOS cameras or Canon’s XA / XF series camcorders, the CR-N500, CR-N300 and CR-X300 can tap into common settings – including the capability of setting the shutter angle in addition to the shutter speed. It’s also easier to match the image from other cameras than before, with added colour compensation function for white balance. What’s more, the CR-X300 will have the addition of SRT protocol and Free-D protocol support, enabling easier workflow integration – particularly in live events and sports. All of these features are readily available with the CR-N700 on shipment.

The applications (paid) and firmware update (free) will be available from mid 2023https://www.canon-europe.com/support/
