Canon continues commitment working with Arbor Day Foundation

Canon U.S.A. Continues its Commitment to Working with the Arbor Day Foundation’s Reforestation Program and Reaches Yearly Milestone

MELVILLE, N.Y., October 23, 2017 – In its ongoing efforts to help protect the planet, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, continues its commitment to the Arbor Day Foundation “Replanting Our Forests” program, reaching its 2017 goal of helping to contribute to the distribution and planting of 50,000 trees this year. To date, Canon contributed to the planting and distribution of more than 460,000 trees since it began its affiliation with the program in 2009.

As an incentive to drive Canon’s efforts through the program, Canon helped contribute to the distribution and planting of one tree for every eligible imageRUNNER ADVANCE multifunction system sold from April 1, 2017 up until the company reached its target goal of 50,000 trees.

Canon designed and manufactured the imageRUNNER ADVANCE series, in which all current products are ENERGY STAR® certified and rated EPEAT® Gold, with environmental concerns in mind. Designed to help users achieve low-energy consumption, the imageRUNNER ADVANCE multifunction systems include efficient fixing technologies and toner that requires little heat for fusing. They can also help minimize waste with sustainable features, such as Secure Print and Forced Hold that allows users to hold, preview, and change print settings at the device.

“Environmental sustainability and community engagement are two supporting pillars of Canon,” says Toyotsugu Kuwamura, executive vice president and general manager, Business Imaging Solutions Group, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “Arbor Day Foundation’s mission mirrors our Kyosei philosophy and our pledge to make a difference in the community and help care for the environment.”

The Arbor Day Foundation’s global reforestation initiatives aim to rebuild forest areas that are in desperate need of regrowth. This year, active U.S.-based replanting efforts are taking place in 35 forests across 23 states. Canon’s support helps contribute to the distribution and planting of trees on Tate’s Hell State Forest in Florida as part of their landscape management to dampen the effects of strong rain storms, as well as the Webb Tract, an impaired watershed in Illinois.

“Canon’s corporate support is incredibly beneficial to our ‘Replanting Our Forests’ program, and we thank the company for their ongoing support and dedication to our cause,” concludes Dan Lambe, president, Arbor Day Foundation. “Their active presence in our program can be seen in revitalized forests, neighborhoods, and communities that are beginning to regain benefits to quality of life that they previously lost due to deforestation.”

The Kyosei Philosophy

Canon continues to be dedicated to its corporate philosophy of Kyosei, which signifies all people working together for the common good. Canon seeks to achieve its goals of energy and resource conservation, as well as reducing environmentally hazardous materials used in its products. Canon shares this philosophy through various environmental, conservation, recycling and sustainability initiatives. Earlier this year at the Canon Americas headquarters, Canon employees began to plant and dedicate trees on the headquarters’ grounds to commemorate anniversaries and milestones, as well as to continue to embrace its corporate philosophy of giving back to the environment.

Canon Hits Major Production Milestone with EOS Series Cameras and EF Lenses

Canon Hits Major Production Milestone with EOS Series Cameras and EF Lenses
Company Reaches 90 million EOS Series Cameras and 130 Million EF Lenses

MELVILLE, N.Y., October 17, 2017 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced that its parent company, Canon Inc., has reached two major production milestones— a combined production of the company's film and digital EOS-series interchangeable-lens cameras surpassed 90 million on September 20, 2017 and 130 million1 EF-series interchangeable lenses on October 12, 2017. A Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR Camera was the 90 millionth EOS Series camera produced, while an EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens was the Company’s 130 millionth interchangeable lens.

Canon’s EOS system of SLR cameras made their debut alongside the EF series of interchangeable lenses in March 1987 as the world’s first fully electronic mount system for silver halide Auto Focus (AF) SLR cameras. Throughout the years, both product lines have continued to expand, providing equipment for various users ranging from first timers to well-seasoned professionals. Production accelerated in the early 2000s with the popularization of Digital SLR cameras.

Since its inception, Canon has continued to develop revolutionary technologies in the EOS series featuring high-image quality, speed and intuitiveness at the core of the design process. The company has also continued to develop their own CMOS sensors and DIGIC Image Processors for the EOS series to provide photographers with the right creative tools to capture the images and videos they desire. Canon’s EF lenses feature world-first2 innovations, such as the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), Image Stabilizer (IS) technology and a multilayered diffractive optical (DO) element.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR Camera
EOS Series

The EOS series of interchangeable-lens cameras began with the Canon EOS 650 SLR camera, released in March 1987. The camera not only featured the world’s first electronic lens mounting system, but also included fully digitized communications between the camera body and lens, providing photographers with a new generation of autofocus technology capabilities.

As popularity of silver-halide cameras boomed, Canon launched several models that covered a wide variety of end-user needs, including the Canon EOS-1 SLR camera in 1989, aimed at professional photographers, and the Canon EOS Rebel XS SLR camera in 1993, a compact, lightweight, entry-level model that expanded Canon’s user base.

Throughout the years, Canon has continued to advance its products that enabled the Company to maintain the No. 1 share of the global interchangeable-lens digital camera market for 14 consecutive years from 2003 to 2016. 3 In 2003, during the dawn of the digital camera age, Canon released the groundbreaking Canon EOS Digital Rebel DSLR camera, an entry-level, digital SLR camera that provided a compact, lightweight body at an affordable price. This move triggered a massive expansion of the camera market, with Canon claiming the overwhelming market share lead that year. The future release EOS 5D series DSLR cameras, aimed at professional photographers, helped popularize video capture using DSLR cameras.

Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM Lens
EF Lenses

Since the development of Canon’s first EF lens, launched alongside the EOS series in 1987, Canon has continued to produce EF lenses featuring world-first technologies such as the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM with Image Stabilization in 1995, the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM with a Diffractive Optics in 2001 and the EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM, treated with highly anti-reflective Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) in 2008. Additionally, in 2015, Canon released the EF11-24mm f/4L USM, the world’s first4 ultra-wide-angle zoom lens to achieve an 11 mm focal length.

Today, Canon boasts 93 lenses5 in its comprehensive EF lens lineup, with focal lengths that range from an ultra-wide 8 mm angle all the way to a super-telephoto 800 mm focal length as well as EF Cinema Series lenses for video production. With a wide selection of lenses for every application including zoom lenses, image stabilization-equipped lenses, fast-aperture lenses, macro lenses and even the TS-E tilt-shift lenses, Canon EF lenses have always been well positioned to meet the needs of all photographers.

This first-of-a-kind programme in Malaysia is part of Canon’s commitment to cultivate a new generation of young photographers and encourage photography amongst Malaysian youths – be it as a lifestyle, a hobby or a career to consider.

Andrew Koh, President & CEO, Canon Marketing Malaysia, explained that Canon inspires to be the industry leader that continuously cultivates photography interest in in the market.

"The photography industry has undergone a shift where, in this age of smartphones, many consumers have the convenience of taking photos. As they are more exposed to better image qualities shared on social media, consumers have also started looking for better alternatives and image qualities which can be captured by cameras. There are also savvy photo hobbyists who are looking to improve their photography skills. We aim to reach out to this group to help them hone their interest and skills," said Koh.

Being the image solutions leader in the industry, Canon continuously evolve to cater to the different needs and usages of different users and in recent years, Canon has not only adapted and compressed the powerful technology of DSLR's down to compact devices that can fit in ladies purses or even pants pockets; but has also designed a Canon camera suitable for everyone. While Canon provides hobbyists and professional photographers with the tools of photography, the imaging brand also want to arm those interested with the necessary skills to pursue their passion; while providing a platform and community for like-minded young photographers to come together and further enhance their skills in photography. Furthermore, Canon believes in the importance and impact that photography has on our culture and in being able to preserve the moments that matter the most to us.

Mr. Jeffrey Kung, Assistant Director, Consumer Imaging Information Division (CII) for Canon Marketing Malaysia said, "The recent Canon Photo Marathon showed a great appreciation for photography in Malaysia. Being the 11th installment to our annual event, we received an attendance more than 1,000 participants with different levels of experience in photography".

"This is why we are organizing our very first-of-its-kind Canon EOS Youth Ambassador Programme. The programme aims to give the means to up and coming young photographers, inspiring and encouraging these communities of young talents to develop the necessary skills so that they can reach their infinite potential," said Jeffrey.

"It is a rare opportunity as the programme will not only provide visibility for these young talents into the extraordinary world of photography, but also a mentor who will accompany them throughout this programme."
