Canon Redesigns Premium L-Series Super-Telephoto Lenses With Its New EF 400MM F/2.8L IS III USM AND EF 600MM F/4L IS III USM Lenses

New Compact and Lightweight EF Super-Telephoto Lenses Are Well Suited for a Variety of Photographers’ Needs

MELVILLE, N.Y., September 5, 2018 – Most professional photographers need to carry multiple lenses in their camera bags. Helping to lighten their load, Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, introduces two new super-telephoto lenses, the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM and EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM. Both lenses possess a dramatic weight reduction and high-image quality, making it ideal for shooters to easily transport and capture images during action-driven scenarios, such as sports and wildlife. Both lenses now hold the title of world’s lightest in their respective focal length*. The weight of the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM and EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM lenses has been reduced by 2.2 lbs. (more than 25 percent) and 1.9 lbs. (more than 20 percent) respectively.

“When developing updates to some of Canon’s most popular legacy lenses, one common question that is asked by photographers was ‘can they be lighter,’” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “The significant reduction of weight in these two lenses addresses this customer need and delivers thoughtfully designed, high-quality optics .”

Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM Lens
Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM Lens
The new lenses are must-haves for advanced and professional photographers shooting wildlife, aviation, sports and news with Canon’s new EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera (with use of one of the three new Canon mount adapters), as well the EOS 1D and 5D series of DSLR Cameras. Both lenses feature two of Canon’s most advanced propriety lens technologies - Air Sphere Coating (ASC) and Super Spectra Coating (SSC), helping to reduce flaring and ghosting, and suppressing the reflection of light, leading to vivid images. These updated lenses inherit the excellent overall build-quality and ruggedness photographers have come to expect and admire from the Canon EF L series of lenses. In addition, the minimum focusing distance has been improved for both lenses, from 2.7m to 2.5m (8.8ft to 8.2ft) for the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM and 4.5m to 4.2m (14.8ft to 13.8ft) for the EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM.

Additional noteworthy features of the lenses include:
  • Upgraded Optical Image Stabilization from three-and-a-half stops to five shutter speed stops1 of correction over the previous f/2.8 lens
  • Improved, flexible focus control with a customizable electronic-focus ring
  • Two fluorite lenses and one super UD lens, helping to provide high image quality
  • Circular nine-blade aperture
  • 17 lens elements in 13 groups
  • Heat-shielding paint helps prevent lens temperature from rising during excessive exposure to sun
  • Fluorine coating on front and rear optical elements, helps to reduce smears and fingerprints
  • Inner focusing system with Ring Ultrasonic Motor

Availability and Pricing
The Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM is scheduled to begin shipping in December 2018 with an estimated retail price of $11,999. Tales by Light photography series streams globally on Netflix

Season 3 of Canon Australia photography series streams globally on Netflix from December 21

Season 3 of the acclaimed Tales by Light photography series will stream globally* on Netflix from December 21. Following the success of the first two seasons of the Canon Australia-produced series, Tales by Light 3 takes viewers behind the lens and into the minds of three new photographers, each motivated to harness the power of images to draw attention to and inspire the world to protect some of the most beautiful and vulnerable aspects of our world: children, the ocean and Australian Indigenous culture.

Scene from Episode One featuring photographer Simon Lister and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Orlando Bloom
Scene from Episode One featuring photographer Simon Lister and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Orlando Bloom

"Tales by Light was conceived here in Australia and we're thrilled that it has been so well embraced by photographers all around the world so far on Netflix," says Jason McLean, Executive Producer and Director of Canon Australia's Consumer Imaging division. "We look forward to the response to Season 3 where the subject matter focusses on the power of an image to connect people and give a voice to aspects of our world that don't have one of their own."

"As the Australian arm of Canon, we're also very proud to feature the story of an Indigenous Australian photographer preserving and celebrating the largely unknown yet still vibrant examples of living Aboriginal culture being practiced today."

Produced once again, by Abraham Joffe, ACS Cinematographer of the Year 2017 and Canon Master, Series 3 of the series follows acclaimed photographers Simon Lister, Shawn Heinrichs and Dylan River as they traverse fascinating and often challenging environments to tell important stories:

Australian Indigenous filmmaker and photographer Dylan River visits the Australian central desert in Alice Springs, Victoria River on the northern edge of the Tanami Desert and the remote Yolngu community in Bawaka East Arnhem Land. Communities and landscape rich with stories, culture and traditions spanning tens of thousands of years.

Photographer Simon Lister goes to Dhaka, Bangladesh with UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Orlando Bloom, capturing the lives of children residing in slums.

Conservationist Shawn Heinrichs travels to Isla Mujeres in Mexico and Raja Ampat in Indonesia to share never-before-seen footage of human impact on marine life in our oceans.

The power of an image

Through richly detailed motion and still imagery, Tales by Light 3 focuses on the stunning beauty and critical vulnerability of people, nature and culture to inspire real change.

"By engaging us emotionally, images cross cultural or geographic boundaries and connect with us on a human level," continues McLean. "In Episode One, Simon and Orlando highlight the plight of almost 3.5 million children working to survive each day in Bangladesh.

"Children living in Bangladesh's urban slums are denied their basic rights on a daily basis," said Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF Representative in Bangladesh. "Rights such as healthcare, access to clean water and education. There are almost 3.5 million children currently working in Bangladesh, many in hazardous jobs that put their health, education and futures at risk."

In Episode Two Shawn Heinrichs incites passion and urgency in the need to preserve our natural habit while in Episode Three with Dylan River who looks to highlight the rich culture and heritage of Australia's First Nations' people.

These scenes inspire hope, other times they're confronting, but through them we have the chance to consider things that we might not have otherwise."

Kicking off the season, the episode Children in Need looks at the impact an image can have on creating connections across the globe and generate much needed support for people living in poverty.

Where to View

To follow the adventure:

Tales by Light season 3 episode guide

Episode One – Children in Need

Photographer Simon Lister has focussed his personal passion for photography to capture visual stories of the children struggling to survive in the world's poorest regions. Together with UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Orlando Bloom, Simon's mission is to meet children living below the poverty line and connect with the humanity that resides in all of us.

The Photographer:
Simon Lister dedicates his spare time outside running his successful recording business to travelling and sharing the issues facing those in the world around us though his imagery. These travels have been entirely self-funded pilgrimages of passion, fuelled by a pure heartfelt love and earnest desire to share all that he has witnessed. He wants to incite action from his audiences by connecting them to the world and spotlighting the tales of those he meets.

Episode Two – Paradise in Peril

"People only protect what they love" – Shawn Heinrichs, an Emmy Award-winning cinematographer and conservationist, seeks to connect the global community with the beauty and vulnerability of threatened marine species by capturing inspiring and dramatic imagery of the region of Raja Ampat in Indonesia.

The Photographer:
Shawn Heinrichs has spent the better part of five years chasing shark-fin operations in the high seas to show the sobering reality of what they were doing. In discovering the state in of the reefs and the sparsity of sharks, Shawn sent his footage to Wild Aid, which has been working on a long-term shark-finning project in China. Wild Aid included the footage in an impactful commercial, with the support of the Chinese Government it was aired on prime-time state media to hundreds of millions of people. The commercial has reduced shark fin consumption by 70-80% in China – all due to one image.

Episode Three – Preserving Indigenous Culture

Dylan River is an award-winning Aboriginal filmmaker and photographer from Alice Springs. He comes from a family of acclaimed storytellers and filmmakers. Dylan's mission is to seek out largely unknown but still living examples of Australian Aboriginal culture to document and preserve them.

The Photographer:
Dylan River's goal is to capture the culture and heritage of Australia's First Nations people so that it can be relayed for future generations. Dylan's exploration of Indigenous culture demonstrates how important it is that these stories are captured and treasured by our nation for the world.

The director and producer
Abraham Joffe ACS is an internationally recognised and award-winning Australian filmmaker, voted ACS Cinematographer of the Year in 2017 for the Tales by Light series. Abraham directed and produced Tales by Lightwith his team from Untitled Film Works and has filmed professionally in more than 40 countries across all seven continents. These experiences have helped forge the striking aesthetic style that shines through his work. His natural curiosity and passion for the extraordinary were behind the decision to build on his partnership with Canon for Season 3.

"Voice of Africa" photography exhibition to be held in Yokohama

TOKYO, December 5, 2018—The Japanese Red Cross Society, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Canon Inc. will jointly host the "Voice of Africa" photo exhibition, to be held at the Minato Mirai Gallery (Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture) from December 18 to 26.

"Voice of Africa" photography exhibition to be held in Yokohama

About the exhibition
Since 2015, the Red Cross and Canon have worked together to host this exhibition, which is part of the Red Cross' efforts to promote awareness of International Humanitarian Law1 and the current state of conflicts occurring throughout the world. This year's exhibition focuses on humanitarian crises in the countries of the Lake Chad region located in central and western Africa (Cameroon, Chad, Nigeria and Niger). The exhibition comprises 46 photographs taken by four photographers affiliated with Magnum Photos2.

7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD)
Background
With the 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) scheduled to take place in Yokohama City in August 2019, this exhibition hopes to shed light on the humanitarian crises in the Lake Chad region, which have not been widely reported on by media and may not be well-known among the public. This region has been heavily affected by prolonged armed conflict, political unrest and climate change, which caused 2.4 million displacements. More than 10 million people are said to be in need of support, but aid remains insufficient. In order to raise awareness of the current situation, the ICRC dispatched four Magnum Photos photographers to the region from August to December 2017—Moises Saman (Cameroon), Lorenzo Meloni (Chad), Emin Özmen (Niger) and Newsha Tavakolian (Nigeria).
  1. International humanitarian law is a set of rules which seek, for humanitarian reasons, to limit the effects of armed conflict. It protects persons who are not or are no longer participating in the hostilities and restricts the means and methods of warfare.
  2. An international cooperative of approximately 50 professional photographers and photojournalists, with offices in New York, Paris, London and Tokyo.

With a new 20.2 megapixel 35mm Full Frame Canon CMOS sensor and Dual DIGIC 6+ Image Processors, the EOS-1D X Mark II professional digital camera delivers stunning image quality and speed. Combining the ability to capture high-resolution still images at speeds up to 14 frames per second as well as stunning high-definition video up-to-4K 60P featuring Canon’s proprietary Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus (AF) technology, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II camera becomes the ideal camera for any professional image creator.

The Ultimate EOS Camera: Continuing a Legacy of High Speed and Performance

Building on the success of the Canon EOS-1D X professional digital camera, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II camera is designed to deliver high-performance, speed, and image quality, with improved comfort for professional photographers. In addition to the new 20.2 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and Dual DIGIC 6+ Image Processors, the new EOS-1D X Mark II DSLR camera includes an improved 61-point High-Density Reticular AF II system with all AF points selectable by the user (and up to 41 cross-type points depending on the lens in use). The improved AF system includes expanded coverage that supports AF at maximum apertures up to f/8 with all 61 points for high precision autofocus even when using EF super-telephoto lenses with an EF extender. The camera also boasts excellent dynamic range and reduced color noise compared to its predecessor throughout its standard ISO speed range of 100 - 51,200. Expansion ISO speeds of 50, 102,400, 204,800 and 409,600 are also available. A first for the Canon EOS-1D series, this camera also features a 360,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor with enhanced precision and performance compared to its predecessor, improving facial recognition and tracking, as well as nature scenes. Additionally, the advanced AE system can detect and compensate for flickering light sources such as sodium vapor lamps that are often used in gymnasiums and swimming pools. When enabled, this anti-flicker system automatically adjusts shutter release timing to help reduce disparities in exposure and color especially during continuous burst shooting.

Two additional EOS ‘firsts’ include 4K Frame Grab and 120p Full HD recording. The camera’s 4K Frame Grab function allows users to isolate a frame from recorded 4K video and create an 8.8 megapixel still JPEG image in-camera. When combined with the EOS-1D X Mark II’s high-sensitivity full-frame CMOS sensor, the new camera’s ability to record Full HD video at frame rates up to 120p will allow videographers to produce high quality slow motion video even in extremely low light. To make video shooting even more intuitive, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II camera’s touch-screen LCD allows videographers to select the camera’s AF point before and during video recording with Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which provides responsive, accurate and quiet camcorder-like video autofocus to DSLRs.

“The innovations within Canon’s new EOS-1D X Mark II DSLR camera clearly set a new standard for professional cameras,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “In developing the EOS-1D X Mark II camera, we looked to incorporate user-requested performance enhancements to bring professional photographers the ultimate EOS camera, a camera that has matured and been developed to meet their evolving needs.”

“Having f/8 capability on all 61 AF points is a tremendous benefit to wildlife photographers," noted nature photographer and Canon Explorer of Light Charles Glatzer. “In order to capture tight shots of animals without disturbing them, I frequently have to use very long lenses—sometimes with an extender attached, which further diminishes the aperture. The improved AF allows me to frame the shot exactly the way I envision it, without having to compromise.”

“This camera is a huge step forward,” remarked acclaimed photographer and Canon Explorer of Light Damian Strohmeyer. “Shooting sports in a gym at 8,000 ISO, it looked as good as 800 ISO from a generation or two ago. The images are tack-sharp, and the autofocus just doesn't miss. I've been amazed by what I've seen so far.”

“The autofocus was awesome,” agreed Peter Read Miller, sports photographer and Canon Explorer of Light. “The higher frame rate coupled with the speed of the CFast card was a definite advantage. It just never buffered out, even shooting RAW.”

The new EOS-1D X Mark II camera also offers a built-in GPS** receiver with compass for precise geo-tagged information of latitude, longitude, elevation and direction. This is especially valuable to wildlife photographers and photojournalists who need to track their locations, as well as providing sports photographers the ability to sync a multiple-camera setup with extreme accuracy and precision. It is also possible to use the camera’s built-in GPS to automatically sync the camera’s time to the atomic clock, an invaluable feature to professionals. An improved grip also makes the camera easier for photographers to hold and maneuver while shooting. In response to feedback from professional EOS users, the AF points in the EOS-1D X Mark II camera’s Intelligent Viewfinder II can be illuminated in red for improved visibility, especially when shooting in dark locations. AF sensitivity in low light has been doubled from EV -2 to EV -3 at the center AF point when the camera is set to One-Shot AF, enabling the camera to autofocus in extremely dark shooting conditions such as a moonlit nightscape. Viewfinder AF coverage has also been increased for greater compositional flexibility.

As with all EOS-1D series cameras, the EOS-1D X Mark II’s rugged construction and magnesium alloy body is weather resistant. The camera also features improved controls and more in-camera image quality enhancements than ever before, including a Digital Lens Optimizer function offering high quality aberration correction which can now be achieved without an external computer. This feature makes it easier for professional photographers to deliver finished files to their clients, especially in situations when access to a personal computer is impractical or inconvenient.

The estimated retail price for the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II is $5999 (MSRP) for the body or $6299 for the Premium Kit which includes a 64 GB CFast memory card and card reader. The new camera is scheduled to begin shipping to authorized Canon USA dealers in April 2016***. For more information and the full list of product specifications, visit:usa.canon.com/EOS1DXMarkII
