Canon Redline Challenge Competition 2022 Winning Image

Canon shares winning image of its Redline Challenge competition 2022

London, UK, Friday 28 October – Canon Europe is pleased to reveal the winner of this year’s Redline Challenge photography competition. Jiří Durdík, a self-taught hobbyist photographer from Czech Republic, won with an exhilarating motion blur shot of a dirtbike race. Following this year’s theme, ‘A Split Second Story’, the image brings to life the fast paced action at the Czech Republic Motocross Championship in Pacov and perfectly captures the organised chaos of the race’s crucial starting point. Aside from multiple technical challenges such as positioning and light, Jiří also had to protect his lens from mud, giving him only seconds to frame and compose the shot. He will receive a Canon EOS R5 and RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM, alongside a mentoring session with Canon Ambassador Laura El-Tantawy.

With over 14,000 entries, Canon reveals the winner of its annual photography competition

Jiří Durdík, who enjoys shooting nature and sports, said: “I’m very happy to have won this year’s competition. I was initially going to send in a completely different photo, but after printing it, I was inspired to swap to this photo at the last minute – and I’m glad I did! I’m really looking forward to using my new kit, particularly the EOS R5. I shoot a lot of birds in flight, so the resolution and advanced focusing system on this camera will help me take a big leap forward with my photography.”

The winning photo was selected by a panel of industry experts and Canon representatives from 14,121 submissions in total.

Lars Lindemann, Director of Photography at Germany’s GEO Magazin and juror for this year’s competition, summarised the panel’s decision: “Jiří demonstrated great intuition with this image, which is a really important skill when you are shooting sports. The composition is also really intriguing. At first, you almost need to look twice before you get it. And then you can continue to look at the photo for a long time and still find something new in it.”

Speaking about the breadth of submissions received, Susie Donaldson, ITCG European Marketing Director for Canon EMEA, said: “The response to the brief has been fantastic. We’ve had such diverse entries; it has really captured everyone’s imagination. The winning image is all about action, chaos, energy! There’s so much going on that you could spend hours looking at it. Jiří managed to create a sense of emotional intrigue as you really feel right there in the middle of it. It’s the perfect split-second story.”

Canon Young Champion of the Year Award Winner

Winners of the Canon Young Champion of the Year Award revealed at the 2022 Global Good Awards
Global Good Awards Canon Young Champion of the Year Award Winner

London, UK, 14ᵗʰ October 2022 – Canon celebrates the winners of the Canon Young Champion of the Year Award, which praises the achievements of young people from around the globe who are committed to pushing for positive social and environmental change.

Nabilah Chowdhury, U21s winner, is a member of the Jane Goodall Institutes National Youth Leadership Council and is a UNYOUTH Delegate.

Now in its eighth year, the Global Good Awards supports long-term sustainable change by raising the profile of young individuals, NGOs and businesses doing exceptional work to address social and environmental issues.

At the hybrid award ceremony on 13th October, Netra Venkatesh and Nabilah Chowdhury were announced as the winners of the Under 16 and Under 21 categories, respectively, with judges praising their work in driving positive change.

As with all candidates, they were asked to submit entries detailing their activism, identifying alignment with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as supporting photos and videos to illustrate how imagery can deliver a universally understood sustainability message.

Netra Venkatesh took home the award in the U16s category for her work founding the Dubai-based SpunkGo social media for Good organisation, which is dedicated to providing free education to 5,000 young women in rural, refugee and slum settings across the developing world. In particular, judges called out her efforts in creating a free and accessible webinar-based learning platform to empower young women across 20 countries to achieve this mission.

In the U21 category, Nabilah Chowdhury won for her commitment to driving positive change with her wildlife and conservation volunteer work, alongside broader climate activism, in Australia. She was commended for her volunteer work at Taronga Zoo’s YATZ (Youth At The Zoo) programme for the past five years, as well as her full-time commitments to organising national school strike 4 climate action and helping arrange Sydney-based sustainability campaigns such as #FundOurFutureNotGas.

Canon has sponsored the Young Champion of the Year Award category for three years. The sponsorship is an extension of Canon’s sustainability vision to use the power of imaging to help people imagine a better world. This commitment is also driven by Canon’s Young People Programme, an initiative to inspire, educate and empower young people across EMEA to share the sustainability stories, aligned with the UN SDGs, that matter most to them.

In a Global Good Award first, Canon YYP ambassador and artist, Eliška Sky, exhibited the first three studies of her photography project that explores the SDGs: Affordable and clean energy (7), Reduced inequalities (10) and Life on land (15). The series titled, Parasites, explores all 17 SDGs through expressions of the human body, focusing on the impact humans have on the world and how we have power to solve these challenges. The images were printed at the Canon customer experience centre in Birmingham, on a sustainable alternative to foam board, FSC certified Dispa Board Bright White FSC4. You can find out more about the Parasites series in this Canon View article.

Canon Wins Trademark Infringement Lawsuit

Canon Wins U.S. Trademark Infringement Lawsuit Against Counterfeiters
Canon Wins U.S. Trademark Infringement Lawsuit Against Counterfeiters

TOKYO, October 6, 2022—In April 2022, Canon filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois against 52 sellers who sell counterfeit Canon products (camera batteries, inkjet printer printheads, etc.) on U.S. e-commerce websites, alleging infringement of Canon's trademark rights.

After the commencement of the lawsuit, about half of the defendants acknowledged the validity and enforceability of Canon's trademarks and agreed to immediately cease and desist from selling counterfeit products. The remaining defendants did not contest Canon's claims in court, and in September, 2022, the court issued a judgment ordering them to cease the infringing acts, ruling in favor of Canon.

Sales in the global e-commerce market have increased significantly, partly due to the spread of COVID-19, and counterfeit goods are frequently trafficked through cross-border e-commerce. The lawsuit is a countermeasure to this situation and was filed at once against multiple non-U.S. retailers selling counterfeit goods on U.S. e-commerce websites.

Counterfeit products are damaging to the brand. They cannot be overlooked because they can cause economic losses such as malfunctions and quality defects, and even pose the risk of physical harm to our customers who purchased products with trust in the Canon brand. Canon will continue to take strict action to eradicate counterfeits.

Canon Central & North Africa takes R-tour to Ivory Coast

Canon Central & North Africa takes R-tour to Ivory Coast with the local launch of mirrorless range of EOS-R system cameras

Canon Central & North Africa takes R-tour to Ivory Coast
Amine Djouahra Canon’s Sales and Marketing Director (CCNA) at R – Tour in Ivory Coast

Abidjan, Ivory Coast, 5 October 2022: Canon Central and North Africa embarked on the Canon R Tour journey in Abidjan, Ivory Coast that falls in line with the company’s vision to bring together the latest imaging technology solutions to the continent of Africa. Attendees at the R-Tour were introduced to the newest cutting-edge product line-up from its well-renowned EOS R system, including the EOS R3, EOS R5 C, EOS R7, and EOS R10. The EOS R3 offers all the familiarity and speed of Canon’s celebrated EOS-1 series, with the innovation and versatility of the pioneering EOS R System whereas the EOS R5 C is a powerful, hybrid cinema camera that combines the professional filmmaking features of the Cinema EOS range with the EOS R System’s photo capabilities.

A high-resolution, full frame CMOS sensor, DIGIC X processor and the RF Mount, are the crucial three elements that enable high fidelity 8K capture, and 45 megapixels still photo capture at burst speeds up to 20 frames per second, all in a single body of the EOS R5 C.

In alignment with the company’s dedication to introducing innovative and technology-led imaging solutions in Africa, Canon brings its much-anticipated R-tour to Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The tour sheds light on its upcoming products, closer to customer strategy, the rise of content creation as an industry in the country, and much more.

Canon will introduce its revolutionary mirrorless range of products - EOS R3, EOS R5 C, EOS R7 & EOS R10 in an endeavor to introduce a much wider array of technology solutions in Africa.

“Canon’s robust new collection expands capabilities like never before. It has made life simpler for creatives across the world with a touch of the button, and now creators in Côte d'Ivoire are also able to get in on the action. These award-winning cameras and lenses add to a greater storytelling experience, and this is what Africa needs to compete on a global scale, in such a competitive content creation space,” said Amine Djouahra, Sales and Marketing Director for Canon Central and North Africa.

Connecting, Communicating & Co-creating

At our consumer-focused event, the panel discussion focused on why mirrorless technology is taking over in the photography field and how there is a rising need in shifting from DSLR to Mirrorless. Our experts also spoke about the growth of the content creation industry, both globally and in Africa. This was followed by a greater understanding of the full capabilities of the R System imaging at the different experiential booths each with a specific purpose or need catering to a particular audience. The booths offered an exciting experience for avid documentary filmmakers and cinematographers, simulating a food documentary experience, while action and sports photography enthusiasts could experience diverse techniques that showcased an adrenalin-filled aerial performance. In addition, they were able to gain guidance at the Check-and-clean booth.

Following on the success of our first Canon Creator Summit during Nigeria's R Tour, Canon photographers took centre stage as the audience members learnt useful tips and tricks to get the most out of these cutting-edge cameras and lenses. At this event, our panel discussion focused on the importance of quality content creation and how it can grow industries. Attendees got to hear about how to excel at fashion content creation from Ramez Aoude and were able to test their skills afterwards with the hands-on fashion workshop. Later in the day, Jean Goun shared his experiences as an event photographer and how to expand your skillset in this field, which was also followed by a hands-on workshop. The guests were also introduced to the new mirrorless range and were able to touch and try them for themselves.

In 2021, UNESCO published a report on the continent’s film and audio-visual industries which revealed that this sector accounts for $5 billion in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which is promising for local content creators to tap into this creative industry and with Canon R-tour we’re able to showcase how latest equipments and right tools can help develop this sector and upskill young content creators.

Along with the photo-video imaging technology in the spotlight at the R-Tour, a variety of printing solutions were demonstrated to showcase the print quality highlighting the complete input to output solutions offered by Canon. The event also focused on providing the required printing solutions to an important market vertical of copy centres who look into adding value to the work that they do for universities and schools and SMEs in the country by detailing the printing landscape and helping them how to identify the right printing solutions which are cost-efficient for their businesses, that can handle the smallest printing requirements to large format printing.

The Spirit of Storytelling

The R-tour also hosted it's Canon Academy Workshops and Photo Walk at Grand-Bassam which was specially granted by Ivorian government and this event saw 30 photographers, videographers and content creators who enjoyed the opportunity to get hands-on experience with our products.

The town is known for its busy, palm-backed beach stretching along the Atlantic coastline. A practical workshop was hosted by professional photographer, former official president photographer and Canon certified trainer Seibou, where he took the audience through the key mirrorless technology cameras from Canon, the R3, R5C, R7, R10.

All-in-all it was a remarkable tour. “We are super excited to see what kind of amazing content comes out of Ivory Coast with these new range of mirrorless EOS-R system cameras. We believe that now is the time for content creators in Ivory Coast to take advantage of this opportunity by adding even greater value to their products, creating more authentic channels, benefitting from mirrorless cameras that incorporates the latest technology,” said Amine Djouahra.
