Two new Canon RF Lenses: RF 70-200MM F2.8L IS USM / RF 85MM F1.2L USM DS

Canon RF 70-200MM F2.8L IS USM Lens
The RF Family Grows By Two: Canon RF 70-200MM F2.8L IS USM Lens Is The World’s Shortest And Lightest Lens In Its Class And RF 85MM F1.2L USM DS Is The First Lens To Feature Defocus Smoothing

New RF L-Series Lenses Aim to Provide Impeccable Performance, Handling and Unique Features to Photographers Shooting with EOS R and EOS RP Cameras

MELVILLE, NY, October 24, 2019 – Completing the “trinity” of RF lenses for the EOS R Full-Frame mirrorless camera system, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM telephoto lens. Additionally, the company also announced its first lens to feature Defocus Smoothing lens coating, the Canon RF 85 F1.2L DS. The ninth and tenth lenses in the RF family are both powerful tools for photographers using the EOS R or EOS RP cameras, in particular, those shooting sports or wildlife photography with the RF 70-200mm F2.8L or portrait photography with the RF 85mm F1.2L USM DS.

Short and Light With All The Might: Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM
The new lens features a large and bright f/2.8 aperture, which, along with the 70-200mm focal zoom ranges, presents an ideal workhorse lens for professional and amateur photographers shooting sports, wildlife, wedding and event action. The new RF lens is 27 percent shorter and 28 percent lighter than its EF counterparti with a large portion of the lens element arrangement closer to the camera body. This arrangement is designed to provide photographers with a more balanced feel and experience even at telephoto end of the zoom range. Additionally, the shorter and lighter design allows the lens to be more easily stowed away in a camera bag when not in-use.

A first for Canon lenses, the new RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM features two Nano USM motors providing an even greater level of high-speed autofocus for still image shooting and quiet and smooth autofocus for video shooting. The lens also incorporates a floating focus control, another Canon first, that drives the two lens groups individually while using the two aforementioned Nano USM motors. The floating focus lens element shortens focusing distance and help reduce breathing, providing users with fast, consistent and reliable performance.

Additional Features of The Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM Include:
  • Customizable control ring that allows photographers to adjust exposure compensation, shutter speed, aperture or ISO
  • 17 lens elements in 13 groups including two aspherical lenses, one super UD lens and four UD lenses, that help to reduce chromatic aberration
  • CIPA standard five stops of image stabilization (IS) including three IS modes with dual-sensing and combination IS
  • 12-pin communication system
  • L-Series dust and weather resistant build with fluorine coating
  • Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) helps minimize lens flare and ghosting

Canon 85mm F1.2L USM DS Lens
Teaching an Old Dog a New Trick: Canon 85mm F1.2L USM DS
Canon has a rich history spanning over 40 years of producing 85mm lenses with f/1.2 apertures, and the new Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM DS is no different, or is it? The lens ushers in a new lens coating from Canon,

Defocus Smoothingii, designed to enhance the appearance of bokeh in the images captured with the lens. DS coating is a vapor-deposited coating technology that is applied to the front and rear surfaces of a specific lens element inside the lens. The coating allows off-axis flux to pass through the periphery of the lens that gradually decreases the transmittance of light, which results in images with beautifully blurred backgrounds.

In addition, the new lens features a bright f/1.2 aperture which, along with the 85mm focal length, encompasses an ideal lens for portrait photographers. 85mm is often the preferred focal length selected by photographers when shooting portraits because it provides an appropriate depth and perspective of the subject relative to the background, helping to capture high-quality imagery with beautiful and desirable bokeh. The focal length also allows for the photographer and subject to maintain optimum distance apart to support strong communication, while not being too close.

Additional Features of The Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM DS Include:
  • Minimum focusing distance of 2.79 feet/0.85 meters
  • Customizable control ring that allows photographers to adjust exposure compensation, shutter speed, aperture or ISO
  • One Aspheric lens and one UD Lens, along with BR optics that help to reduce chromatic aberration
  • 12-pin communication system
  • L-Series dust and weather resistant build with fluorine coating
  • Air Sphere Coating (ASC) that helps minimize lens flare and ghosting

Pricing and Availability
The Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM and RF 85mm F1.2L USM DS lenses are scheduled to be available late November 2019 and December 2019, respectively for an estimated retail price of $2,699.00 and $2,999.00 respectivelyiii. For additional information, please visit, usa.canon.com.

Three Days Filled with Presentations, Panel Discussions and Photo Walks from some of Canon’s Outstanding Professional Imaging Creators

MELVILLE, NY, October 23, 2019 – DSLR, Mirrorless, or point-and-shoot – Ansel Adams once said, “The single most important component of a camera is the 12 inches behind it.”1 So much more than a person who takes photographs, a photographer is a storyteller – without words. At PhotoPlus Expo 2019, Canon U.S.A., Inc. will showcase an assembly of visual storytellers, experts in their respective photographic genre who will provide insight, tools and knowledge on a variety of topics. Some new faces, some familiar – all of them exemplify the commitment Canon has shown as a leader in digital imaging to catapulting the industry forward for the next generation.

Canon Main Stage
A popular attraction for PhotoPlus Expo attendees, the Canon Main Stage will host a plethora of presentations and panel discussions from leading professional imaging creators. Discussions such as “The Ultimate Choice” will take on the challenge of choosing the right camera for the job. Included on the panel will be current Canon Explorer of Light Bob Davis, who first made waves in the photography community as a newspaper photographer in Chicago and then segued his talents into A-list celebrity weddings and events. Vanessa Joy, who will also be part of the panel, is a top rated New York/tristate luxury-wedding photographer who prides herself on four key areas for her clients: her photographs, the albums she creates, the experience she provides and the customer service her clients receive.

In addition, presentations will take place on a variety of other topics, including: “Powerful Landscapes” with Erin Babnik, “The Right Equipment for Surf Photography” with Zak Noyle and “When the Gear Matters Most” with Canon Explorer of Light Stephanie Sinclair. A Pulitzer-Prize winning photojournalist, Sinclair has dedicated her career to providing visual evidence of the human rights challenges faced by women and girls around the world. Through her charitable organization Too Young To Wed, she has taken her mission a step further, using visual storytelling to empower young girls escaping child marriage.

Live Shoots will also be available on the Canon Main Stage highlighting different scenarios such as fashion, weddings and even motorcycles. Sal Cincotta, St. Louis based wedding and portrait photographer and notable industry writer, author, educator and publisher of Shutter Magazine will host a fashion live shoot titled, “Creating Fashion Portraits Your Clients Will Love.” A full schedule of events on the Canon Main Stage is available here as well as in the booth2 and below is the list of additional Canon professional imaging creators who will be presenting and participating in the panel discussions:

New Canon’s imagePROGRAF PRO Series Printers

Canon’s new imagePROGRAF PRO Series Brings Prints to Life for Photographers, Fine Art Professionals and the Production Signage Market
Canon’s new imagePROGRAF PRO Series Brings Prints to Life for Photographers, Fine Art Professionals and the Production Signage Market

MELVILLE, NY, October 22, 2019 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is excited to announce the new imagePROGRAF PRO Series printers: PRO-6100, PRO-4100, PRO-2100, PRO-6100S and PRO-4100S models. These large-format solutions offer new innovative technologies for fine art, photographers and production signage users.

Building on the success of the previous PRO Series, these new printers feature a “first-of-its-kind” intelligent automatic media feeding and media reading system, which allows the operator to move away from the printer after placing the roll in the machine, removing the need to feed the roll or select the media type. After the roll is loaded into the machine the media is automatically fed while the built in multi-sensor measures the surface reflection and media thickness to identify the media type. The device features a new technology in which it can automatically detect the media length as well, without the need to print a barcode as with Canon’s previous devices and as with current third-party devices. These new models also have the ability to print borderless on all standard and custom widths, an ideal time and cost-savings feature built to benefit print professionals.

“Print has the ability to bring ideas to life, and Canon is happy to provide its customers with the ability to do so more efficiently through the new imagePROGRAF PRO Series,” said Shinichi Yoshida executive vice president and general manager, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “Utilizing Canon’s intelligent media feeding and reading system, our customers can now spend more time exploring their creativity, and less time having to deal with the manual hassle of feeding rolls into the machine.”

The new PRO Series is designed to provide customers with an easy-to-use experience that values time as well as productivity. Built with an intuitive, upgraded 4.3 inch touch-screen operation panel, this series provides users with better operability and visibility. For added usability, the three main functions, media switching, feeding and cutting, are conveniently hard buttons on the front of the product’s interface to contribute to better media handling and save users the hassle of having to navigate through multiple functions. The printers have all been updated with a transparent clear window designed to allow end users to easily see whether printing has begun, and check printed images and the printing size.

The standard, built-in multi-sensor helps enable easy and economical color calibration for consistent color reproduction from print to print, as well as from printer to printer. With the Device Management Console software, production professionals with multiple printers can centralize status and color management across a variety of devices. The series is also developed with advanced security features, including support of PIN printing to help protect data and increased administrative control of end-user printing. Additionally, users now have the ability to turn off the Chroma Optimizer, per individual media type, allowing more creative control of the printing process.

The new PRO Series also includes as standard a wide variety of creative and workflow software to help increase the productivity and efficiency of large-format printing environments. These software features include Professional Print & Layout, which supports auto nesting and achieves a streamlined workflow for printing photos, providing customers with the ability to create and save custom template designs, which is ideal for wedding packages, and Direct Print & Share, allowing production end users to batch print files and create hot folders for drag and drop printing.

“The imagePROGRAF PRO-2100 printer has the great color and density we expected from Canon and the new borderless printing feature has increased our productivity while cutting waste” said Larry Hook, director, Cashman Pro Lab. “This cost-effective solution offers our users the high quality prints they desire while being a solution that is easy for employees to operate. We look forward to purchasing another printer in the near future to keep up with our print demands.”

Models from the new imagePROGRAF PRO Series will be showcased at the PHOTOPLUS 2019 (Booth #121), taking place from October 24-26 in New York City at the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

Canon celebrates 100 million EOS-series interchangeable-lens cameras

Canon celebrates production of 100 million EOS-series interchangeable-lens cameras
Canon celebrates production of 100 million EOS-series interchangeable-lens cameras

TOKYO, October 9, 2019—Canon Inc. today celebrated a camera-manufacturing milestone as combined production of the Company's EOS-series silver halide (film) and digital interchangeable-lens cameras surpassed 100 million units* on September 20, 2019. An EOS R (released in October 2018) mirrorless camera was the 100 millionth EOS-series camera produced.

EOS-series cameras

An acronym of Electro Optical System, EOS is also the name of the goddess of the dawn in Greek mythology. Boasting an attractive product lineup that caters to a variety of user needs and an extensive series of EF lenses, with which Canon strives to expand the boundaries of imaging expression, the EOS series has supported a great many users over its long history, and enabled Canon to maintain the No. 1 share of the global interchangeable-lens digital camera market for 16 consecutive years from 2003 to 2018**.

The EOS series began with the EOS 650 (released in March 1987), a next-generation AF single-lens reflex (SLR) camera featuring the world's first fully electronic lens mount. Production of the EOS series began in what was then Canon's Fukushima plant and now takes place at a variety of locations—including Taiwan, Miyazaki, Nagasaki and the lynchpin Oita Canon—where production is carried out under stringent product quality management. Following the release of the EOS 650, Canon continued to introduce products featuring innovative technology that realize speed and comfort—such as the high-end EOS-1 (released in 1989) and the EOS Kiss (released in 1993)—expanding the EOS series to cater to users ranging from amateur to professional.

From the year 2000 onwards as the pace of digital SLRs (DSLR) adoption picked up, Canon sought to create even more appealing products. The EOS series' core concept was expanded to include "high image quality," achieved through such proprietary, cutting-edge technology as CMOS sensors and DIGIC image processors. In 2003, Canon released the EOS Kiss—a compact, lightweight DSLR with an affordable price—which contributed to the wider adoption of interchangeable-lens digital cameras. Through the EOS 5D series, which contributed to the use of interchangeable-lens cameras for video capture, and the establishment of the Cinema EOS System of professional digital cinematography products in 2012, Canon extended its video technology to the BtoB sphere as it entered the video production industry. Canon will continue to explore new approaches with the EOS series, such as the 2018 launch of the EOS R System, which employs the new RF Mount.

  • Canon continued to explore new approaches with the EOS series with the 2018 launch of the EOS R System, which employs the new RF Mount

Expanding from its beginnings in still photos to the realm of video, the EOS series has come to support a wide range of users, from entry-level to professional. Canon will continue to prioritize “speed, comfort and high-image quality” as the core concept of the EOS series, further strengthening and expanding the EOS System towards expanding the culture of photographic and video imaging.
