Development of the Canon EOS R5 Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera
The Next Generation: Canon Announces The Development Of The Company’s Most Advanced Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera Ever – The EOS R5

The Company will Also Develop Seven RF Lenses and Two RF Lens Extenders in 2020

MELVILLE, NY, February 12, 2020 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced that its parent company, Canon Inc., is developing the highly anticipated Canon EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera. The camera will feature a newly designed CMOS sensor and new image processor, along with new state-of-the-art optical technologies the company has been able to cultivate through its long history of groundbreaking camera and digital imaging solutions development. In addition, Canon plans to release seven RF lenses and two RF lens extenders that are currently in development. These new photography tools will help to continue to strengthen the EOS R system and cement the RF mount as an industry leader.

“Today’s announcement comes as a direct result of the tireless effort of Canon engineers who have been tasked with developing the next generation of Canon EOS R camera and RF lenses to help elevate the popular system that was announced in 2018,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “In developing the new camera, Canon listened to extensive user-feedback from a variety of photographers. The outcome is a camera and lenses that will delight a variety of shooters and further helps to demonstrate Canon’s commitment to full-frame mirrorless cameras and lenses.”

The EOS R System was initially developed to provide engineers with the ability to design lenses that were thought to be impossible to create previously. The wide lens mount diameter, shorter back focus, and high-speed system for transmitting data between camera and lens have resulted in an imaging system that delivers higher image quality and greater ease-of-use than ever before.

The new full-frame mirrorless camera currently under development will fully leverage the advantages of the EOS R System, helping to produce a camera that features high-speed continuous shooting and 8K video recording. Furthermore, the camera will provide photographers with more efficient workflows thanks to improved transmission functionality, operability and reliability. These enhancements, along with many others, will help to further elevate and solidify the EOS Series concept of “Speed, Comfort and High-Image-Quality.”

Canon’s EOS R5, the first of the next generation of full-frame mirrorless cameras planned for EOS R System, will include a newly developed CMOS sensor. The new sensor will enable enhanced features such as high-speed continuous shooting up to approximately 20 frames-per-second (FPS) when using the silent shutter and up to approximately 12 FPS when using the mechanical shutter – A feature professional sports and wildlife photographers will find to be extremely impactful on their ability to capture fast-moving subjects. From a video perspective, the camera’s 8K video capture capability will prepare videographers for the future of movie-making- capturing 8K footage today allows for even higher-quality 4K productions in addition to the ability to extract high-resolution still images from the video footage. The EOS R5 will be the first Canon camera equipped with IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization) and when used in conjunction with the extremely effective in-lens stabilization (IS), will allow photographers to handhold the camera in light levels not previously imagined. Additionally, the camera will also feature dual-card slots and will support the automatic transfer of image files from the device to the new image.canon cloud platform.

Alongside the EOS R5, Canon is also developing seven RF lenses and two RF lens extenders scheduled for release during 2020, including the RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x.

A preview of the EOS R5 will be on display at the 2020 WPPI Show (February 25-27) in Las Vegas.

TOKYO, March 26, 2020—Canon Inc. announced today that the company's interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and mirrorless cameras) have maintained the No. 1 share of the global market for 17 consecutive years1 from 2003 to 2019.

Canon celebrates 17th consecutive year of No. 1 share of global interchangeable-lens digital camera market

Canon develops the key imaging system components featured in its EOS series of interchangeable-lens cameras—CMOS image sensors, image processors and interchangeable lenses—under the core concept of, "Speed, Comfort and High Image Quality." Putting together a wide-ranging product lineup—from high-performance flagship models that are highly trusted by professionals to entry-level models that allow users to enjoy high-image-quality shooting with easy operation—Canon continues to support the diverse needs of customers.

During the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS Kiss Digital (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D in other regions) in September 2003. This groundbreaking camera, which was competitively priced and featured a compact, lightweight design, captured the top share of the global market and set the stage for growth in the digital SLR market. Since that time, Canon has continued to launch a range of groundbreaking products, including the professional-model EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for digital SLR video recording.

Canon introduced new possibilities for photographic expression with the launch of the EOS R System in October 2018. Including such products as the EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera and RF lenses that fully leverage the company's optical technologies, the new products helped further expand the Canon EOS System.

In 2019, Canon launched a wide range of attractive products2 including the EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera (March) and EOS 90D DSLR (September). In striving to further expand its lineup, Canon managed to secure the No. 1 share of the global market for the 17th consecutive year.

Canon is also currently developing the EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera, equipped with a newly developed full-frame CMOS sensor and featuring high-speed continuous shooting for still images and 8K video recording. What's more, the company is currently developing 9 RF lens models, including the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, and plans to release them throughout the course of 2020.

Canon will continue to refine its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technology, to expand and create an even stronger EOS System for both DSLR and mirrorless cameras that opens up new avenues of image capture to meet the needs of increasingly diverse users and to promote the spread of photo and video culture.

1 Based on a Canon survey.
2 Canon released six interchangeable-lens camera models in 2019: EOS RP (March), EOS Kiss X10 (April), EOS 90D (September), EOS M6 Mark II (September), EOS M200 (October), EOS Ra (December).

Canon Medical to Development a Rapid Genetic Testing System for Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Canon Medical to Commence Development of a Rapid Genetic Testing System for Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

MELVILLE, NY, March 19, 2020 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced that Canon Medical Systems Corporation (Canon Medical) announced the start of development of a rapid genetic testing system for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), reaffirming Canon Medical's commitment to the basic research and development of rapid diagnostic test kits. This project is part of a research program focusing on the development of diagnostic methods for COVID-19 led by the Japan Agency for Medical Research1.

Canon Medical was selected to participate in this research program in cooperation with Nagasaki University. This was in recognition of Canon Medical's strength in leveraging its technologies in delivering practical solutions to support medical emergencies, notably by supplying Ebola rapid test kits to the Republic of Guinea in 20152, donating Ebola rapid test kits to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2019, and through the manufacturing approval and sale of the Genelyzer KIT (a reagent kit for Zika virus RNA testing) in 20183.

The test and the reagents being developed for COVID-19 RNA testing is based on the LAMP method4 developed by Eiken Chemical Co., Ltd., and are to be used with a compact isothermal amplified gene fluorescent detector manufactured by Canon Medical to detect the presence of virus. Compared to the conventional test method of real-time PCR, the LAMP method allows for detection of the virus to be performed more easily and quickly, which makes it suitable for testing in local areas where infection is prevalent.

Take your office on the road with the Canon PIXMA TR150 and PIXMA TR150 with battery
United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland - Canon Europe announces the launch of the Canon PIXMA TR150 and PIXMA TR150 with battery, two powerful, portable, and robust printers, delivering exceptional quality and enhanced usability. These compact models feature versatile wireless connectivity with support for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands and smartphone control.

Compact and connected portable printers for professional results on the go
With convenience and quality at its core, the Canon PIXMA TR150 features a 1.44” mono OLED screen for simple navigation, as well as USB charging and the option to load custom templates. Perfect for a business on the move, the improved battery and ability to print more pages than before will ensure effortless and professional results, wherever and whenever.

Travel light with a portable printer
Portable and tough for printing on the move, the Canon PIXMA TR150 with battery gives mobile workers the freedom to take their business on the road. The perfect companion for working remotely, users can expect fast and accessible charging through either the AC power adaptor or the bundled USB Type-C cable using a compatible in-car charger, power bank or laptop.

The sleek, robust and scratch resistant design add practicality, with all connection ports organised on one side of the device for optimum cable management, while the in-built anti-theft locking slot1 gives users the choice to secure the printer in temporary locations.

Enhanced usability and efficiency
Building on Canon’s heritage for easy-to-use printers, the PIXMA TR150 features a 1.44” mono OLED high-resolution screen, providing real-time ink levels and battery life indication (for PIXMA TR150 with battery) for easy navigation and complete visibility. Unique to this mobile printer, the PIXMA TR150 can store up to five pre-saved custom templates2 which the user can print directly from the screen without the use of a laptop, PC or smart device and can quickly produce core documents with speeds of 5.5ipm for colour and 9ipm for mono3.

Fast and functional, the PIXMA TR150 with battery employs quicker charging (2 hours 20 minutes via the AC adapter) and the ability to print up to 330 pages from a single full charge4. For enhanced usability, an easy attach-detach battery function ensures no tools are required which is ideal for when working on the go.

Convenience with wireless printing
Compatible with iOS and Android, users can print wirelessly via the Canon PRINT app or print from popular cloud services such as Google Drive and Evernote with the PIXMA Cloud Link5. For those needing to make copies of documents on the move, Smartphone Copy can be used to easily take photos of documents and send directly to print. Users can also print with Mopria6 for Android, AirPrint7 for iOS or Windows 10 Mobile without having to download any additional apps.

Users without a router can simply click the dedicated Wireless Connect button and initiate a 1-to-1 connection with the printer to their smart device. Offering seamless wireless connectivity, the PIXMA TR150 has support for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands, perfect for stable and stress-free printing.

High quality business printing on the go
The hybrid ink system facilitates quick delivery of high-quality text and graphics, including last-minute presentations, charts and graphs when on the road. The system boasts a pigment black cartridge for sharp text, and a combined dye based four-colour cartridge (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) to achieve vivid photo prints with up to a 100-year album life8. When running low on pigment black, the ‘save black ink’ mode allows for economical printing by reducing the use of black ink, so users are never caught short.

Capable of producing A4 borderless prints and the rear feed able to hold 50 sheets of plain paper, this model is perfect for pop-up shops needing to create vibrant point of sales materials at the touch of a button.
