Canon Oceania biggest ever Grants program celebrating 50 years!

Canon Oceania launches their biggest ever Grants program celebrating 50 years!

Sydney, AUSTRALIA – 31 May 2023: Today, Canon Oceania is opening submissions for its 2023 Grants program. This year, to celebrate Canon’s 50th year in Australia, they have increased the Grant pool to $50,000 across the region. In addition to the three category winners across Education, Community, and Environment, Canon will also recognise an overall winner to receive both a Grant and a Content Development Package valued at $10,000.

Since the inception of its Grants program 17 years ago and guided by its Kyosei philosophy of living and working together for the common good, Canon has supported more than 100 community organisations and schools and provided more than $500,000 in monetary and product support.

“Through our annual Grants program, we get the chance to hear from organisations who are contributing to positive change. Kyosei is at the heart of everything we do, so it gives us great pride to be able to celebrate and reward the important role they are playing within their local communities. In celebration of our 50th year of operating in Australia this year, we are excited to be able to offer $50,000 worth of Grants across the region, extending our support so these organisations can continue the great work they’re doing,” said Kotaro Fukushima, Managing Director for Canon Oceania.

The three categories in this year’s Grants program are Community, Education and Environment. The program will provide each Grant recipient (in both Australia and New Zealand) with $2,500 in cash and Canon product worth up to $2,500 RRP. Products will range from cameras to lenses, printers, and other accessories.

In addition, the $10,000 Content Development Package awarded to the overall Grant recipient in each country will enable the winning individual or organisation to build professional content to support their initiative in the form of editing, photography, videography and/or studio hire.

The Grant pool is made up of $25,000 of Grants in Australia and $25,000 in New Zealand, totaling $50,000 across the region. These funds will support the winning projects to continue their important work across the Community, Education and Environment sectors.

Last year’s winner stories
Winners of the 2022 Canon Oceania Grants have put their rewards to great use. Australian Seabird & Turtle Rescue, winner of the Community ‘Flood Recovery’ Grant*, aims to lessen the impact of humans on the marine environment. The organisation does this by rescuing and rehabilitating seabirds, shorebirds, sea turtles and sea snakes, and through conducting educational activities to inform the public.

“We took the opportunity to install CCTV cameras in all animal care areas and to be able to stream to a TV in our education room. The ability to monitor the patients remotely has enhanced our after-hours care and allowed us to give timely intervention without the constant need to physically monitor them. In the event of another flood, the cameras will give us the ability to mitigate against being caught unawares.

We would recommend organisations applying for the Canon Grants Program as the impact can be huge. We would like to thank Canon for this generous support of not-for-profit organisations,” said Anna Dicker, President, Australian Seabird & Turtle Rescue.

Last year’s winner of the Education Grant, Kamaruka School, is a specialist school for neurodivergent boys from Years 2 to 10, who often have difficulties navigating the mainstream education system or require support for their unique needs such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or high functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

“We have captured a few basic recollections of the school from past and older students to eventually add to our website and we can’t wait for the next camp so that students can capture motion not just moments. Students are also keen to start their own film making. They are currently in the creating and storyboard stages. We are also investigating the safest way to launch a YouTube Channel.

The application process for Canon Grants Program was straightforward. Being a small school with no social media presence, we weren’t sure we would get the votes, but our community got behind us to support us,” said Michelle “Zinny” Zintschenko, Principal, Kamaruka School.

The 2022 Community Grant winner, GingerSnap Patisserie, is a social enterprise that creates plant-based desserts to celebrate the limitless potential of people with disability and create opportunities for more people with a disability to share their stories.

“The Canon Grants program has been monumental for GingerSnap on many levels, predominantly through brand recognition.

During the campaign, we were able to share our story on multiple social media groups and ask for community support. We received hundreds of messages of support from people who had never heard of us prior to the campaign and wanted to jump straight on and vote. This converted to more newsletter sign ups, and even some orders.

Together with this brand recognition, the quality of our photos has gone to a whole new level and means we can develop quality content for our newsletter and website. We now look professional!” said Jessica Colgan, Co-founder/Operations, GingerSnap Patisserie.

Finally, Remember the Wild, winner of the 2022 Environment Grant, is Australia’s leading nature connection organisation that dedicates itself to capturing a huge breadth of wildlife and landscapes and tells their stories. The organisation is committed to educating people on the ways in which Australia’s species and land can flourish, if people are willing to live in a way that fosters connection, respect and reverence for the many forms of life.

“It was a privilege to be the recipient of the Canon Oceania Environment Grant in 2022. At Remember the Wild, we exist to connect people to nature by means of education, art, events and any resource that can further the cause. We are currently producing a film about the endangered and little-known Spotted-tailed Quoll, the largest marsupial predator on the Australian mainland. But to photograph and film them in ultra-high definition, we need camera traps. This was why the Canon Oceania Grant was so helpful to our mission.

We were able to use a Canon EOS R6 to film in beautiful 4K resolution and strong low-light performance. With the cash element of the prize, we were able to purchase the necessary kit to convert this camera into the main body of a motion-triggered camera trap, filming the quolls as they move on their few frequented paths through the wilderness. Our film is aiming to be finished by the end of 2023, available to view in festivals 2024, and we can't wait to see what our Canon gear captures between now and then. Early results have already been exciting,” said Caleb McElrea, Director, Remember the Wild.

The 2023 Grants categories
The 2023 Grants will be awarded under the following categories:

Canon Develops Quantum-Dot Inks for use in Next-Gen Displays

Canon develops perovskite quantum-dot inks for use in next-generation displays, with improved durability and potential for application in high-image-quality displays

Perovskite quantum-dot inks developed by Canon emitting light
Perovskite quantum-dot inks developed by Canon emitting light

TOKYO, May 29, 2023—Canon Inc. announced today that the company has developed a quantum-dot ink with a perovskite structure (perovskite quantum-dot ink) as a material for next-generation quantum-dot displays, and has successfully demonstrated its practical durability1 for the first time2 in the world.

The performance and image quality of display devices continue to rapidly improve, and towards this end, one such approach that is gaining momentum is applying quantum-dot technologies (QD) to meet the need for displays with higher image quality.

Quantum dots are semiconductor nanocrystals that measure only a few nanometers in diameter and can emit light with high brightness and high color purity. Displays with quantum-dot technology are attracting growing attention due to their wide color gamut that makes possible high visual expressiveness. Therefore, quantum dots for display is sought to achieve higher color purity and higher light utilization efficiency. In addition, though cadmium (Cd) has thus far been the preferred material for quantum dots, due to environmental concerns, there is a growing interest in Cd-free materials.

With these requirements in mind, Canon has focused on the development of perovskite quantum-dot inks. Perovskite quantum dots are considered an effective Cd-free approach other than InP (indium phosphide) quantum dots. In terms of color purity and light efficiency, many see perovskite quantum-dots as a promising material capable of contributing to high brightness, a wide color gamut and high resolution. However, poor durability has thus far been a barrier to practical use.

To address the issue of durability, Canon is leveraging its proprietary technologies nurtured through development of ink and toner for printers. The company has established a unique method to form a protective shell on quantum dots, thereby achieving practically durable perovskite-dot ink with retained color purity and light usage efficiency.

InP quantum-dot ink covers 88% of the color gamut based on the ITU-R BT. 2020 recommendation3, while Canon's perovskite quantum-dot inks can cover 94%4 of the gamut. In addition, the high efficiency of light use is expected to reduce power consumption of quantum dots by approximately 20%5 compared to conventional technology.

Canon's quantum-dot inks have the potential to help realize next-generation OLED displays with ultra-high definition, such as quantum-dot 8K displays, a technology that thus far has been unachievable.

The results of technological development of the ink and the technology for mass-production of high-quality perovskite quantum dots were announced on May 26, 2023 (local time) at SID Display Week 2023 in Los Angeles, USA.
  1. T90=10,000 hours. The time until the brightness reaches 90% of the initial value at 1,000nit (a unit indicating the degree of brightness), which is equivalent to the blue light brightness under actual use.
  2. As of May 28, 2023. Based on Canon research
  3. Recommendation formulated by ITU (International Telecommunication Union) to provide video signals for UHDTV broadcasting systems
  4. Estimation when a display is constructed by combining a red/green ink-cured film with an appropriate blue light source
  5. Estimation when used in current OLED TVs utilizing quantum dots

Canon's perovskite quantum-dot inks
Quantum-dot ink with indium phosphide cover 88% of the color gamut based on the ITU-R BT. 2020 recommendation, while Canon's perovskite quantum-dot inks can cover 94%4 of the gamut.
Canon's quantum-dot inks have the potential to help realize next-generation OLED displays with ultra-high definition, such as quantum-dot 8K displays, a technology that thus far has been unachievable, thanks to the high conversion efficiency of light that makes possible smaller pixels.

OLED displays using quantum dots
  • Quantum dots convert the blue light of the light source into red and green. Compared with white light sources, quantum-dot technology makes possible red and green light with higher color purity, thus enabling displays with a wider color gamut.
Conceptual diagram of an OLED display utilizing quantum-dot technology
Conceptual diagram of an OLED display utilizing quantum-dot technology

Perovskite Quantum Dots
  • The wave length (color) of emitted light can be controlled by compositions and particle sizes of perovskite quantum dots.

What is a perovskite structure?
A perovskite structure is one type of crystalline structures. By changing the elements that compose a perovskite structure, a variety of properties can be manifested, including superconductivity, ferroelectricity, fluorescence and photoelectric conversion. Due to this versatility, a perovskite structure holds great potential for use as functional materials. In recent years, perovskite solar cells have attracted attention thanks to their low cost and versatility that enables them to be used anywhere.

Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM: First-ever RF pancake Lens

Canon’s lightest, thinnest, smallest RF lens offers high portability with greater creative possibilities for both APS-C and full-frame EOS R camera users

Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM: First-ever RF Pancake Lens

SINGAPORE, 24 May 2023 — Canon today announced the RF28mm f/2.8 STM, the first-ever “pancake” prime lens in the RF lens lineup. The lens forms a flat combination with both full-frame and APS-C EOS R cameras, offering a large maximum aperture and excellent image quality in a tiny, extremely portable form factor.

“There is high demand for pancake lenses: small, thin, and lightweight lenses with minimal impact on the size and weight of a camera. They are also easy to hold and carry around. The RF mount now has its own dedicated version with the RF28mm f/2.8 STM, which was developed based on photographers’ input. It reflects our dedication and commitment to catering to the needs and wants of photographers.” said Imasaka Daido, Director of Regional ICB Sales & Marketing, Canon Singapore.

Slim Pocketable Body, Outstanding Mobility
At less than 2.5 cm long when retracted and weighing no more than a bar of soap at around 120 g, the RF28mm f/2.8 STM is thin just like the word “pancake” suggests. It barely adds to the size and weight of your camera—you could even use it in place of a lens cap! Enjoy the lightest, flattest, and most portable combination possible with your full-frame or APS-C camera, whether you are travelling light, exploring the streets, shooting long videos or vlogs handheld.

Excellent Image Quality
Designed with an efficient optical layout comprising three large-diameter plastic-molded aspherical lens, the RF28mm f/2.8 STM offers excellent sharpness and clarity from the image centre to the edges, within a compact package. The image quality is a notch above that of the EF40mm f/2.8 STM and RF50mm f/1.8 STM, which are known for their superior performance.

Versatile Focal Length on Both Full-frame and APS-C
With its wide f/2.8 aperture, the RF28mm f/2.8 STM offers beautiful bokeh along with the speed necessary for freezing fast motion and achieving sharper handheld shots in low-light situations.

The versatile 28 mm focal length is just enough to easily frame a wide range of scenes on both APS-C and full-frame cameras.

On full-frame cameras such as the EOS R8 and EOS R6 Mark II, it provides a wide angle-of-view that can capture landscapes and cityscapes with the right amount of perspective, or portraits that show ample background context without the subject appearing too small in the frame.

On APS-C cameras such as the EOS R50 and the EOS R7, it offers a standard angle-of-view equivalent to 45 mm on a full-frame camera, providing a natural perspective that is easy to compose with. Half-body portraits are possible from a comfortable distance away—close enough to communicate without getting in your subject’s face! Pair it with the new EOS R100 to get the smallest combination possible.

With its high mobility, image quality, and easy-to-use focal length, one might be inspired to move around and get creative. New angles and perspectives are just a tilt and a step away.

In addition, the Off-Camera Shoe Cord OC-E4A has been introduced – a multi-function hotshoe extension that succeeds the Off-Camera Shoe Cord OC-E3. The new cord allows hotshoe accessories such as flashes and microphones to be placed off-camera while maintaining the most stable communication possible, paving the way for greater creative expression. Both the camera connector and accessory connector feature dust- and water-resistant capability, akin to that of the EOS-1D series professional camera.

Canon EOS R100: Entering the World of Mirrorless

Take your first step towards creating beautiful, high-quality photos

Canon EOS R100: Entering the World of Mirrorless

SHAH ALAM, 24 May 2023 - Canon Marketing Malaysia (“Canon”) today announced the EOS R100, which is its smallest, lightest, and most affordable EOS R system camera to date.

Hunter Zhang, Director of Image Communication Business Division at Canon Marketing Malaysia added “At Canon, we are dedicated to meeting the photography requirements of all types of photographers, ensuring the highest quality at various budget points. With the introduction of the EOS R100, our goal is to open doors for a new community of users, enabling them to experience the joy of capturing moments with the EOS R system.”

Superior Image Quality Anywhere, Anytime
The EOS R100 delivers clear and sharp images with beautifully resolved details through its APS-C size CMOS image sensor. As Canon’s smallest, lightest EOS R series camera, weighing around the same as a 330ml canned drink at approx. 356g1, it is easy to slip into your everyday bag and carry around, ready to capture fleeting moments and cherished memories. With Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connection, you can share your pictures to social media easily through the Canon Camera Connect app via your smartphone.

Elevate Your Shooting Experience
Designed with a viewfinder and generous grip, these features will ease your transition to start shooting like a professional photographer. The clear, high-definition built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF) provides better visibility outdoors under strong sunlight, while the rubberised textured grip allows a firmer, more stable hold on the camera, helping you nail steady shots.

Get Great Shots with Ease
Fast, highly accurate autofocusing, supported by Eye and Face Detection, detects and follows subjects over a wide area of the image, so it is easier to capture amazingly sharp pictures of people and objects even if they fidget or move across the frame. With a compatible lens, including your kit lens, you can also enjoy image stabilisation, which enables you to snap sharper handheld photos even in dim lighting. A convenient built-in flash helps you get well-lit shots in darker scenes or backlight, with flash power control options that you can utilise for creativity.

Exploring Video Creation
You can even create videos without shooting video, which is great for getting started without worrying about story concepts or editing. The Hybrid Auto mode turns your still photos and video snippets into a digest movie of the day’s activities while the 4K Timelapse Video mode automatically takes shots of a scene at predetermined intervals and stitches them into a high-resolution video, all with pristine image quality and details.

For more hands-on video content creation, features like 4K video shooting and slow-motion movies with 120p high frame rate recording are available. With Eye Detection AF and Movie Digital IS function in movie mode, you can keep people in focus and ensure stable footage even if you are shooting while walking.

Customise Your Style
The EOS R100 offers multiple ways to create images regardless of your skillset when it comes to photography or your familiarity with manual controls and technical photography terms. Besides the typical DSLR and mirrorless camera controls, there is the Creative Assist mode, which lets you change settings using layman terms, such as “Background blur”, “Brightness”, and “Saturation”. Alternatively, you could also use the Scene modes and Scene Intelligent Auto, where the camera chooses the best settings for your scene or ideal outcome. Creative filters under the in-camera presets is yet another option that allows you to change the look and finish of your images to express your individual style.

A Vast Selection of Lenses to Create With
The imaging possibilities are endless with a mirrorless camera – change your lenses and watch your perspective transform along with it! The EOS R100 is directly compatible with over 30 RF and RF-S lenses in the ever-growing RF lens line-up, which let you go wider, closer, reach further, or create beautiful, dreamy bokeh effects. It can also be paired with over 80 EF lenses via the EF-EOS R Mount Adapter.
