Canon Europe challenge elite Parkour athletes Storror

Canon Europe challenge elite Parkour athletes Storror to cross continents by any means possible

London, UK, Monday 25th June 2018 – Canon Europe has launched its latest campaign, in collaboration with elite Parkour athletes Storror. Filmed in the historic city of Istanbul in Turkey, the campaign encourages people to try a new experiences for the first time and capture it on a Canon camera.

The athletes achieve a ‘World First’ crossing from Europe into Asia by Parkour in new campaign

Canon Europe challenged Storror to attempt a bold, exciting and audacious stunt, in this case the athletes turned the cameras on themselves and filmed their adventure free-running across a series of iconic sites in Istanbul, such as the Bosphorus Strait which separates Europe with Asia. The challenge was a remarkable feat of human endurance, skill and agility which will inspire others to try something for the first time.

The challenge saw the seven-strong UK based group jump, vault and climb over a combination of obstacles, including the Galata Bridge, the domed cupola rooftops near Süleymaniye, culminating with a leap onto the roof of a passenger ferry, carrying them to the cargo seaport of Haydarpaşa on the Asian side of the Strait, to successfully complete the challenge.

Storror filmed their adventure exclusively using a variety of Canon cameras and lenses, which included the award-winning EOS M50 and an EOS C200 cinema camera. The EOS M50 mirrorless camera was selected due to its lightweight and compact body, fast autofocus and seamless connectivity to social media, making this the perfect choice.

The elite athletes have earned a loyal following on social media, with over 1 million subscribers to their YouTube channel alone. Over the years, the free-runners have travelled to over 78 countries and are unique in the way they shoot, direct and edit their own material. Storror’s Drew Taylor has previously helped choreograph action scenes in blockbuster movies such as Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle and Dr Strange starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

Lee Bonniface, Marketing Director, Canon Europe said: “We are delighted that we were able to support Storror become the first Parkour group to cross continents. We challenged them to attempt something bold and capture their experience to inspire others to do the same. Whilst we don’t expect everyone to be quite as daring, every day can produce a first and Canon will help you capture it.”

Drew Taylor from Storror, said: “When Canon Europe challenged us to do something for the first time, we came up with the idea of using Parkour to cross continents. Rather than making things easy for ourselves, we took things to the next level, creating something that had never before been attempted, by doing it over moving boats and vehicles and traversing through the busy streets of Istanbul.” He added: “Canon Europe also provided us with the awesome EOS M50 to use, which is lightweight and has great autofocus, perfect for fast moving parkour. We were able to connect the cameras to our smartphones for a quick and easy upload to our social channels.”

On location in Istanbul with Storror was Samo Vidic, a highly acclaimed sports photographer and Canon ambassador. Samo used a selection of Canon equipment to photograph and capture Storror’s first, which included the EOS M50, EOS 5D MK IV, EOS 1DX MK II and an EOS C200.

‘Girt by Sea’ – Australia as never seen before

Sydney, Australia, 14 June 2018 – Today Canon Australia is proud to announce the launch of Girt by Sea, a breathtaking exhibition by Tony Hewitt and Denis Glennon AO. The unique showcase comprises a stunning collection of 100 large-format aerial images of our coastline captured and reproduced in rich detail and displayed on a scale as bold as the voyage to capture them. Australian Foreign Minister Hon Julie Bishop MP will officially open the exhibition tomorrow at Paddington Town Hall, with the doors opening free of charge to the public from Saturday 16 June until Wednesday 27 June, 10am–6pm daily.

“Girt by Sea the latest in a series of major collaborations for Canon locally and we’re extremely proud of what we’ve been able to achieve together with some of the most creative minds in Australia,” says Canon Australia’s Director of Consumer Imaging, Jason McLean. “It’s great that Tony and Denis approached Canon with Tony’s vision because the scope and purpose of this audacious project was immediately appealing. We’re proud of our products, but ultimately we’re known for what people like Tony and Denis do with them – and I think we all agree that they’ve done something very special indeed.”

Tony Hewitt comments on the collaboration: “As Helen Keller famously said, ‘Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much’. It had always been my dream to create a project on the scale of what we’re unveiling today and I am sincerely grateful to Canon Australia for their confidence in us and their support and sponsorship of the adventure.”

The Dream
Since his school days singing Advance Australia Fair in assembly, Tony Hewitt was fascinated by the curious expression ‘girt by sea’. Years later as an acclaimed photographer, ‘girt by sea’ became the metaphor for an epic Australian adventure: to circumnavigate Australia’s coastline by air in one 31-day trip, capture it in stunning detail and bring new meaning to those three words. Tony shared his dream with close friend and accomplished photographer Denis Glennon AO, and the pair decided to make the dream a reality.

“I knew that only a privileged few had explored Australia’s breathtaking coastline to any significant degree from the air. So I got to wondering what an adventure it would be to experience all of it in one go; to capture and reveal its magical, ever-changing beauty,” says Tony Hewitt. “Girt By Sea started as an ambitious dream and now it’s a lived experience. More than that, the collection means that we can now hold the understanding of those three words in our hands.”

The journey of discovery
Commencing and finishing at Jandakot Airport, Western Australia, the voyage took an anticlockwise flight path allowing both photographers to shoot simultaneously through front and rear portside windows of the Cessna 210 light aircraft, which generally tracked just off the coast.

“This was never a documentary trip; it was a voyage of discovery akin to the explorers of old,” says Denis Glennon. “There’s lots of planning and preparation with a trip of this scale but ultimately it’s instinct and curiosity that led to us taking the images in our collection. We had an expectation of what we might see courtesy of Google Earth, but what we actually saw when we got there blew us out of our seats every time.”

The challenges
Following extensive research of historical weather patterns, especially for the more remote southern and northern regions, April was selected as the optimal time of the year to complete and aerial circumnavigation of the coastline in one go. The decision proved a good one and the pre-planned schedule was adhered to, despite challenging weather on several days.

“We had to complete the trip in 31 days so planning had to account for the journey and photography time and we had to provide the pilots with the way points ahead of each leg. We could delay take-off or get out early but we had to stick to time,” says Tony Hewitt. “Planning can get you so far but we had to constantly account for variables such as tides, weather conditions and just the unexpected marvels that we would find when we were faced with a location for the first time.”

The Collection
“The collection expresses what Girt by Sea means to us – it’s the emotional response to what we saw a point in time captured in beautiful, large-format images,” says Denis Glennon. “It’s the result of our daily decision to focus on what we actually find, not on what we expect to find – that’s the spirit of exploration!”

“I hope people share the same emotional response of ‘Wow – look at that!’ that we did when we encountered these places,” says Tony Hewitt. “It doesn’t really matter where it is. What is so striking is the texture, colour, and shape of our coastline. We have in our minds a hard line dividing land from sea, but it’s actually a much more fluid transition.

Next Generation of EF 70-200mm Lenses Features a Variety of Updates Including Enhanced Optical Image Stabilization in the f/4 and the Inclusion of Air Sphere Coating in the f/2.8

MELVILLE, N.Y., June 7, 2018 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today introduced two new telephoto zoom lenses, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM and Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM. The new lenses serve advanced amateur and professional photographers in a variety of applications and solutions including wildlife, landscapes, portrait and sports photography. Canon EF 70-200mm focal-length lenses are a popular option for photographers in need of a long zoom range that maintains a relatively compact design. In addition, these updated lenses inherit the same overall build-quality and ruggedness photographers have come to expect from the Canon EF L-series line of lenses.

“At the core of image capturing, Canon believes the lens is just as important as the camera. A seamless relationship between the two allows photographers to produce emotion-evoking and timeless images,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “Canon is excited to offer photographers two distinct options in the 70-200mm focal-length, continuing to further expand our optics heritage.”

The new Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM features numerous updates over its predecessor, making it an ideal lens for advanced amateur photographers using Canon DSLR cameras such as the EOS 6D Mark II or EOS 80D. Most notably, Optical Image Stabilization is upgraded from three stops to five shutter speed stops1 of correction over the original f/4 lens. The improved IS allows photographers to more easily capture crisp, in-focus images without the use of a tripod. The new lens also features three IS modes, each uniquely designed and suitable for a variety of shooting situations, such as the capture of still subjects, panning or fast moving objects2. Furthermore, the IS operational noise has been reduced, which proves ideal for photographers shooting in a concert hall or on-stage shooting at the theatre.

Additional noteworthy features of the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM include:
  • One fluorite lens and two UD lenses helps to provide high-image quality
  • Minimum focusing distance shortened from 1.2m to 1m (3.9ft to 3.3ft)
