Canon EOS R3 Announcement: Media / Press Release

Canon EOS R3 Camera
Building on the success of the EOS R series of cameras and leveraging advancements in technology that have come along since, the EOS R3 combines some of the best of both the EOS R5 and EOS-1D X Mark III cameras to provide a robust, high-performance camera.* The EOS R3 is the first "3" series camera since the popular EOS-3 film camera launched in 1998.

At the heart of the EOS R3 is a Canon developed 24.1 megapixel back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor which combines with the DIGIC X processor to deliver a higher speed readout, allowing for continuous blackout-free shooting** at up to 30 fps in electronic (silent) shutter mode with minimum rolling distortion. The combination also increases the high sensitivity light capturing efficiency of a native ISO of 102400 for still images. The improved Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with 1,053 AF Points features evolved EOS iTR tracking for subjects such as people, animals, as well as select cars and motorcycles2 down to EV -7.5. The EOS R3 also allows the user multiple ways of controlling AF using Eye Control AF, Smart Controller with home position and the classic multi-controller. The camera also includes a new multi-function hot shoe which alleviates the need for extra batteries and cables in accessories such as microphones and flash transmitters. The EOS R3 also includes flexible connectivity options with built-in wired LAN, GPS, USB, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The Canon EOS R3 is designed to satisfy the most demanding expectations in a camera - emphasizing speed, performance, and reliability. (Source: Canon USA)

Canon EOS R3 Features / Specifications

EOS R3 – High Speed, High Sensitivity and High Image Quality Advanced Full Frame Mirrorless camera

Made for: Professional sports photographers, photojournalists, wedding and event photographers

Best for: Sports Photography, news photography, wedding and event photography

High Speed, High Sensitivity and High Image Quality
  • 24.1MP Canon developed Full Frame Back-illuminated Stacked CMOS Sensor, the first Back-illuminated Stacked CMOS Sensor in the EOS Series
  • High Speed DIGIC X digital image processor
  • Standard ISO range 100-102400 and expandable to ISO 204800
  • Up to approx. 30FPS[1] high speed continuous shooting with Electronic Shutter
  • High speed read out of CMOS sensor enables electronic shutter with 14-bit RAW and significantly reduces rolling shutter distortion
  • Blackout-Free EVF during continuous shooting[2]
  • Electronic Shutter provides shutter speed up to 1/64000s and Bulb mode also supported
  • Incorporate In-Body Image Stabilization and provide up to 8-stop shake compensation[3]. The In-Body Image Stabilizer provides 5-axis stabilization for photo and video shooting and coordinates with RF Lenses with Optical Image Stabilizer to enable more effective stabilization.
  • Flash photography with Electronic Shutter up to approx. 15 FPS[4] is now possible (x-sync: 1/180s)
  • Anti-flicker shooting with electronic shutter is now possible
  • New High Frequency Anti-Flicker Shooting (50Hz to 8192 Hz) to accommodate LED lighting

Innovative Eye Control AF with more advanced subject recognition and tracking
  • Innovative Eye Control AF[5] function, a first in the EOS DIGITAL series, enables the AF frame to be controlled according to detected movement of the user’s eye, making quick AF transition between subjects possible.
  • Renowned “Dual Pixel CMOS AF II” technology which provides up to 100% AF coverage area[6]
  • AF tracking and calculation at 60 FPS when an electronic shutter is used. The high-precision AF continues capturing the subject even during continuous shooting at speeds of up to approx. 30 FPS.
  • Minimum AF brightness of EV -7.5[7] and low-light SERVO AF performance has also been improved
  • Features evolved “EOS iTR[8] AF X” with AF algorithm developed using an expanded scope of application of Deep Learning technology for improved subject recognition and AF tracking:
  • New Vehicle Detection capable of overall and spot detection for motorsports[9] (automobiles and motorcycles). With Spot detection setting, driver’s helmet can be detected
  • In addition to head, face and eye detection, a body detection algorithm has been added to people detection for situations where large movements block or hide the face or the head
  • Animal detection[10] now steadily tracks the animal's body, face, and eyes
  • Revamped tracking system allows simply “grabbing” the parts of a subject to be tracked using the 1-point AF or zone AF, the camera will determine the optimum tracking position and perform subject detection and tracking
  • Subject tracking is now possible from any one of the 7 AF Area modes, including 1-point AF or Flexible Zone AF, for flexible AF operability
  • AF frame or Tracking subject can be switched even during AF or continuous shooting. Subject Tracking can be turned on or off during AF or continuous shooting too
  • New Flexible Zone AF Area allows customization of AF Area
